  1. If the Twins are a model franchise, I want to use a different model. Their model has basically been competing in a very weak division. They have Liriano, and then their other starters are guys that don't have the velocity to consistently put guys away. Slowey (4.43 career ERA), Blackburn (4.19), Baker (4.32), & Pavano (4.43) really aren't anything special. The Twins' rotation is basically the equivalent of an injury-prone Gallardo + 4 pre-injury Dave Bushes. I don't see what's so admirable there. Solid for sure, but nothing that will guarantee any postseason appearances. On offense, the Twins really aren't much different from the Crew, either, in that they have their two premier bats & then a bunch of average to above-avg. type guys around them. The model franchise I want the Crew to emulate is Tampa Bay.
  2. You forgot about Wolf who makes way too much money to be taken out of the rotation. It would be great if Wolf could go on some sort of run so we could dump his contract. Yo, Wolf, Narveson, Parra, & Bush works for me. Showcase Bush until the first few pitching injuries & get what you can for him. Then plug Estrada in his place so we can find out what we've got with both him & Manny. Yo/Wolf/Narveson/Parra/Estrada sounds fine by me.
  3. Why do you want to pay for it down the road when this is not a playoff team this season?
  4. Katin's hurt right now, though, isn't he?
  5. Do the Brewers need to wait much longer until they're basically safe risking Braddock's Super Two status?
  6. I really believe it's managed that way largely because of the money involved in the save stat. I'm sure to some extent it's the manager believing they have a guy who best embodies The Closer Mentality™, or that the closer is the best reliever on the roster, but saves = $$... and to not use your closer in a save situation is, in theory, costing your closer money.
  7. I don't think Ortiz would be able to even play 1B at this point. Would you want him just to flip him?
  8. There is no way you can discern Peterson's impact (positive or negative) over this small a sample. Since the entire organization revamped its pitching model with the hiring of Peterson, I sincerely doubt he is in any trouble just yet.
  9. Since I seriously doubt the willingness of the org. to DH Prince (though yours would be my first scenario, too), I'd just vote to DH McGehee & slap Counsell at 3B, but that's probably a longshot too. My guess would be Gerut DHing if Gomez is healthy & Edmonds isn't.
  10. After defending him 'til I was blue in the face as recently as a week ago, I give. Turns out the blue should have been for sarcasm in my posts, I guess. If he's not injured, he must really be toast. In either event, he should not be pitching meaningful relief innings at this point.
  11. Wow. Does that change anything in Group D, or will his absence only really be something to worry about beyond group play?
  12. Not only that, but as of today two of our 5 opening day outfielders are on the DL. Gerut has a solid track record against RHP for a reserve OF, especially one that has also established the ability to man CF capably.
  13. If they are preaching that message, it's not getting through. Isn't that the point of coaching? If the players are ignroing them, that tells us alot about Macha and Peterson. Or this (imo more likely) scenario -- the players aren't ignoring them, they're just not executing
  14. Good lord, Cardinals. Just shut up. Shut up. Carpenter's as bad a whiner as they have. Interesting. So players can't be happy when they do succeed OR be upset when they don't. No no! You've got it all wrong -- they just need to submit it to the Batican for approval first. Pope Tony must approve.
  15. But they knew going into the trade that Lee was 100% committed to hitting FA (that was the reason Philly was looking to move him). It was a move done exclusively with contending in mind, and iirc the thinking from the Mariners was that the three prospects they gave up for him were roughly equal to the two likely comp picks they'll get for him walking. I don't disagree that, based on some pundits' picks, you can call the year disappointing so far. I just don't think the move was a waste of prospects, as Z seemed to have a plan heading into it.
  16. No, I didn't see that. Sounds like it was an impressive showing, though. Having Messi alone always seems like it makes Barca up a man anyway http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. I will too, but I still don't believe that Escobar is a good enough hitter to warrant batting in the #2 spot, and like I mentioned I think there are good (healthy) candidates in Hart & Gerut, depending upon the handedness of the pitcher. Plus, my comment was exclusively about one game. I can't personally get too excited about Escobar's triple last night. That looked more like a ball Bruce misplayed/misjudged than a well-hit ball. Though I will acknowledge that a lot of triples come from misplays or caroms. So far I've been pleasantly surprised by Escobar's discipline, but definitely disappointed in his contact ability. I wasn't expecting him to hit above .300 this season like he did in his callup last season, but I was definitely not expecting him to struggle as much as he has. I hope we see him start to turn that around, and with a nearly .250 BABIP so far combined with a solid LD%, I think he will.
  18. Yeah, I recognized that name as someone you'd discussed. Thanks for the answer.
  19. His 3.8% HR/FB is fluky (career 10.7% rate), so don't count on him keeping balls in the park like that, especially with a theoretical home park that plays to the HR in Miller. His FB, & IFFB rates are both well above career norms, and his BABIP & LD% are under. This is, with almost near certainty, not the Fausto Carmona you're going to see the rest of the season.
  20. I see Solis wasn't in your most recent Mock Draft 1st round, colby (#14 was RHP Brandon Workman). What's caused you to come around on him lately?
  21. I meant that, out of a group that includes Jeffress, Rivas, Peralta, Odorizzi, Arnett, Scarpetta, Rogers, even Butler/Anundsen/Heckathorn, I would be surprised if we don't see a couple of (or more) good MLB pitchers emerge by the end of 2012.
  22. McGehee isn't great, but I haven't seen him blowing plays like Fielder and Weeks have. McGehee is the type of defender that's pretty sure-handed, but is weakened by lack of range. So he doesn't necessarily look bad out there like Weeks can, but Casey just doesn't get to enough balls to be a good 3B... hence why I'd like to see him at 1B & Gamel at 3B in the post-Prince era. Would it be asking too much for Ken Macha and Rick Peterson to really make it more of a priority to have guys throw more strikes and not nibble as much? How about once in a while throwing a strike even on an 0-2 count just to keep the pitch count down, especially when you have good stuff. You can't honestly think Macha & Peterson don't ask their pitchers to attack hitters, can you? I'm not sure what can really be done about the pitch counts, from a coaching perspective. This is on the players. I mean, it's not like guys want to only throw 5 or 6 innings a night.
  23. That post wasn't referring to Monday night's game, it was referring to Sunday night's game (check the date)
