  1. I simply pointed out to the original poster that the stats he used didn't fit his argument that they're "only the Orioles." And said poster has explained his point in stating that numerous times... this thread should get back to discussing top starters that may be available, like Eric Bedard.
  2. Toronto has a top catching prospect in Taylor Teagarden, so they have no need for Salome. Getting Rolen is a massive addition in salary to the already massive addition that Halladay is. When did they get Teagarden from TEX? I swear I even saw Teagarden catching for the Rangers this season.
  3. Prince is far better and more valuable than Matt Cain Factoring in both offense & defense, I'm really not sure this is true. Cain even has some pop as a hitter.
  4. My problem is not w/ calling the O's offense unspectacular, it's diminishing Bedard's performance b/c he played "the Orioles," a team whose offense is in the top half of baseball in all of the more important offensive categories AND is behind only a handful of National League clubs (3-4). I ... watched the game. It was a nice performance against a mediocre offense that helped Bedard out too. I promise that's my last post on this wrinkle. I don't know how many times I've posted that Bedard pitched well.
  5. And Kendall's so-called good defense (honestly, I'm not seeing that this season... good at blocking pitches, yes... but no throwing arm weapon) doesn't even come close to offsetting his horrible offense.
  6. I think you're right about the contract situation for Santana.
  7. There's no doubt that offense is top 5 if it's in the NL...so I can't see how you can minimize Bedard's start against "the Orioles." Not sure what your problem is with my calling an unspectacular offense unspectacular. The O's offense is not one to be feared, and I don't think they will be better at season's end than all but 4 other NL teams. Now we're in 'agree to disagree' territory & there's no need to derail this thread any further. Bedard was very good, but the approach from the O's offense in a team sense just wasn't. I watched him pitch this start, so unless you did too & saw some things I missed, I guess I don't know what to say... Bedard was good but also got help from the O's. Could be a scary team in a couple years And I completely agree with that.
  8. Neither Gamel nor Escobar is overrated by Brewers fans. They are two very legit prospects.
  9. Oh... that Tony Pena. I was assuming this was Tony Pena, Jr., so the comments on a pitcher had me really confused. Solid addition for CWS, but I'm beginning to think Kenny Williams & Co. are kinda caught in-between rebuilding & contending.
  10. That's basically what I was trying to say... that, since he will likely overpower most AAA hitters, so he's probably better off just working at the MLB level.
  11. Agree to disagree on what? Those are facts. There is no way that lineup as of right now is top-5 in the AL, and the facts bear that out. Roberts has actually had a down year so far by his own standards (OBP of only .340), and aside from him, Markakis is really the only hitter that would improve just about any team's lineup at his position. Jones has had a great first half, but his BABIP is pretty high iirc, so no way of knowing whether or not he'll be able to sustain his strong production. Huff has actually been pretty bad this season, and is one of the players of whom I was critical in assessing the O's lineup. A .763 OPS at 1B in the AL is pretty bad.
  12. Yeah, thanks sarge. I was only pointing out that, while Bedard certainly had a dominant (short) outing, it came against an unimpressive offense. Not sure he'd get through 4 with only 2 hits allowed against a lineup like BOS or NYY. That said, he was flat-out dealing. Filthy performance, and his curveball was probably his most lethal weapon -- he was throwing his strikeout-caliber curve for strikes too, which should pretty quickly explain why he racked up so many K's. Christ, what are your thoughts on the Brewers then....? That so far, our production from C & SS has been black hole-esque. The team is average or far better at every other spot (assuming 3B is manned predominantly by McGehee/Gamel/Counsell & not Hall).
  13. I guess that for Halladay, I wouldn't want the Brewers to offer much more than something like [Hardy + Parra + Salome/Lawrie + prospect(s)]. I really think that trading either Gamel or Escobar right now would be a huge mistake.
  14. While I'm inclined to agree with the assessment that Hart lacks the plate discipline to evolve into an All-Star caliber player, Corey's on pace to obliterate his personal-best BB total. He already has 30 this season (over 333 PA), and only needs 7 more free passes to establish a new high. Fwiw, applying his current BB rate to a 'full season' of 600 PA yields 54 walks. If anything, I've been very encouraged by Hart's progress this season (as opposed to being further entrenched in the belief that his 2007 was a fluky season).
  15. For me the problem is that we don't really have anyone better than Parra in-house right now. So if the organization feels comfortable calling Manny back up, I am too. He certainly needs to regain his confidence at the MLB level. I'm not sure if overpowering most AAA batters will do much for him there.
  16. Hart is reaching the point where I don't expect much out of him in the future This was pointed out elsewhere, but Hart has actually been very solid over his last ~ 100 PA. I'm glad he turned down the Brewers' extension offer, but I'm not as convinced as many that Corey's just a mirage of a good player at this point. I think he's going to either be the Brewers' RF for the forseeable future, or dealt for pitching help.
  17. I'm certainly no authority on the Orioles, but in terms of hitting -- as of today -- they are below-avg. or worse at 1B, SS, & 3B... and I guess I just don't see Luke Scott as a .980 OPS talent. I used baseball-reference.com & OPS+ scores for a quick-&-dirty look at their offense. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/2009.shtml
  18. Great post splitter... some people just seem to assume a player goes cold & not only is he untradeable, but he'll never hit again!!!! Hardy's talent is unquestioned, and I severely doubt any MLB scouting department has long-term concerns about him. If the Brewers really wanted this to happen, theyd probably have to be willing to take Julio Lugo off the Red Sox hands in order to get their foot in the door. I sincerely doubt that. If the BoSox want to dump Lugo, the Brewers need to dump Hall.
  19. I like that Bedard would be cheaper, but I hope the Brewers want to see him demonstrate that he can handle an 'Every 5th Day' type of workload. One good start of 72 pitches is nice & all, but this *was* the Orioles' lineup. I doubt any deal gets looked at seriously until after Bedard has made at least two or three more (solid) starts.
  20. I would also vote to keep Prince around... but to weigh in on the proposed BOS trade, I agree with RyDogg & would want to see Lars Anderson included if we shipped off Fielder.
  21. I find it interesting & yet confusing that Ash would have anything to say about the attendance for a minor-league affiliate. Isn't an inherent part of this kind of relationship that the big-league club agrees to sign on for the affiliate's promotional approach? I know the Beavers (San Diego AAA) here in Portland just do an awful job of promoting themselves & also see pitiful attendance... in an urban-set stadium, no less. I haven't heard anything about the Pads griping over attendance totals. Just seems out of line for Ash (or anyone not working for the Stars).
  22. I can't wait. I hope to see as many (3) or more Brewers hats there this year as last year.
  23. Another nay vote on moving Escobar (or Gamel, frankly). I like how trwi7 said it: " If it takes a "Teixeira like haul" for the Blue Jays to move him, then count me out."
  24. Eric Bedard's final line against the O's: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K (72 pitches) EDIT: His highest velocity on the start was 94 mph
  25. Does batting Gamel leadoff & letting him play 3B sound strange to anyone? It just seems to make so much sense to me.
