  1. Gamel needs full-time work every bit as much for his defense as his offense. If he's going to be wasted away on the bench, he should have been in AAA already. I have to agree that the spotlight shines on Melvin here. If your manager won't play him & you're instructing him to play Gamel, that's not good... and if you don't care whether or not your best prospect bat is getting full-time pt, that's also not too good.
  2. what I said is that the vast majority of people who use more serious drugs (like TheCrew07 mentioned) started with marijuana. I will admit I could be wrong, but I really thought this has been shown untrue. Not that users of other drugs don't use or haven't used weed, but that it is some sort of huge gateway drug.
  3. Looking at the Yankees right now I think the Yankees can part with Wang right now. I wonder if a Hart + package would land Wang from the Yankees. I wouldn't want any part of Chien-Ming Wang right now. He knows what's wrong (not getting on top of his sinker), and still hasn't been able fix it. I'm guessing there's nothing Bill Castro could tell Wang that the Yankees haven't already tried. He really shouldn't even be starting over Phil Hughes at this point.
  4. Davies was effective at times, and at times I felt he didn't recognize open teammates/runs. Altidore was alright today, but not nearly as visible/effective as he was against Spain imo. The entire 2nd half the back line looked lost to me. Brazil's first goal was just a great strike, but on the 2nd goal Gooch let his man go and he got the goal, the one that wasn't called a goal I'm pretty sure was lack of communication. The winner came off a set piece where no one picked up the goal scorer, I don't know if it was Dempsey's man, but he was the one who was closest, so I have to blame that on him, though he might not deserve it. There were even a few instances where Howard wound up making a save... or the ball was knocked out of bounds, after which Howard had some hot words for the defense. I honestly don't know if it was bad defense, good offense, or both.
  5. Cool story on Demerit, DaBush I'll probably feel better about a 3-2 loss to Brazil in a FIFA final in a few days, but for now, ouch. At the least I still have higher hopes for next year's World Cup Yeah. I think the US team gameplanned really well for Brazil. Seemed like the entire first half Brazil was on the ropes. But in the second half, let's be honest... the more talented team worked their opponent into the ground. I swear Brazil just alternated between 'being on the attack', and 'getting the ball back from a US clearance to go right back on the attack again'. Seemed like once they adjusted to the US's strategy, we just had no answer. Kaka is so good, it's just amazing. The Brazilians were phenomenal, and you could really easily argue that the score should have been 4-2. Think about that -- a team that held Spain scoreless for 90 minutes... and Brazil put up 4 goals in 45 minutes! Certainly a frustrating loss, but lots of positives. Howard was brilliant. In fact, "brilliant" doesn't even adequately sum up how I felt about his performance. The save at ~ the 70 min. mark where he basically took the foot off the Brazilian player's foot (name escapes me, sorry) was incredible.
  6. TIM HOWARD MVP OF EVERYTHING! (wow, after the replay, just a missed call by the officials on the Kaka header. That ball looked completely in the goal)
  7. Starting to see some tired legs for the US... I hope the reserves are up to the challenge for the stretch run.
  8. The only problem is that if Branyan were to make the ASG & HR Derby, there wouldn't be a derby. They'd just have all the players line up so they could award Branyan the trophy.
  9. Oops. I think I cursed Demerit. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif 2-1 now.
  10. Dempsey 10' Donovan 27' That, my friends, is sexy! This is the most excited I have ever been about soccer. I also successfully cooked eggs over medium for the first time in my life... coincidence? I think not! EDIT: Oh, and thebruce & yoshii8 completely nailed it for the two goals. The way Donovan played the ball back to his left foot before striking it past Julio Cesar was super-slick. Nice to see Demerit coming up big on a few plays early, too.
  11. Not mid-season, anyway. I think the kind of pitcher lcbj68c is after can be obtained in the off-season (thinking a Hardy trade here)
  12. Most recent I could find on Glaus was from the Disabled List Informer (6/25/09): Troy Glaus is progressing slowly as he recovers from shoulder surgery, but he is now taking batting practice and was recently cleared to resume a throwing program. Unless he is used as a bench/pinch hitting option, there seems to be no way he will be back soon for the Cardinals because he can only play third base. The Cardinals have shown interest recently in acquiring Adrian Beltre and Mark DeRosa - both third baseman - so this basically means that although they are hopeful that Glaus can return, they're not really sure he will be ready by the trade deadline.
  13. Just want to say that I really like Macha's use of Gamel in the leadoff spot today. Mat certainly has the kind of plate discipline you want out of a leadoff man, and he's a talented enough hitter that he's not a head-scratcher atop the lineup like, say, Kendall.
  14. To 'defend' my mention of Halladay, I guess I don't feel that the Blue Jays have the depth of talent to hang all season long with NYY & BOS. Further in my defense, this isn't just based on an ESPN force-feeding; I've actually watched quite a bit of all three teams play this season. Just my opinion though. I really see McGehee taking that type of track as a player, if he continues the way he's hitting, and this isn't all a fluke. I'm not sure what to make of McGehee in terms of sustainability. His BABIP is obscenely high right now (.378 on the season entering play on 6/28), but that's actually dropped almost 20 points over the last 3 weeks... a stretch in which Casey's OPS has been over 1.000! I think McGehee is a legit hitter, and you can just add him to the laundry list of moves Jim Hendry botched last offseason (technically it was still during the reg. season iirc). For DeRosa, I think this is a nice addition for the Cardinals since he can play all over. Right now I don't think they should worry about where he will play. They have a spot for him now, and his versatility will allow LaRussa to get him in the lineup a lot the rest of the way. Nice try guys... What do you think you're 'calling' them on, Briggs? Doesn't make any sense. McGehee's bat has to play somewhere next year and RF looks to me to be the most logical spot. I think it will be interesting to see who gets dealt next offseason for pitching. At this point though, the most likely candidate is Hardy, not Hart.
  15. Got my hands on a pre-street copy... really looking forward to watching this tonight.
  16. My point being is he's a complete right off. I think it's fair to say Mr. Jeffress = worst pick in the history of the Brewers, taking into consideration he was a first rounder, the expectations, the fact we are no longer in the Sal Bando era (did we really expect much back then?) and the fact it wasn't injuries that did the guy in, rather character. Not even close to being the worst draft pick ever.
  17. I'll probably get slammed for this idea, but I was bored and think something near this is doable. Perhaps overpaying a bit, but I think we need to at this point. If we wait until the deadline, another 30 games, this team could go (10-20) over that span with the rotation the way it is now and have a very slim chance of recovery. The proposed trade (in terms of value) isn't a bad one, but living in the Pac NW I can tell you that endaround hit the nail on the head. Felix is the present & future of the Mariners... though Beltre's injury (out 6-8 weeks for surgery to remove a large bone spur from his shoulder) means you can probably cross him off that list. One point I want to make is that I think basing personnel decisions on what 'could' happen (like going 10-20) is the wrong way to go. Sure, they could lose 20 or even more games in a 30-game stretch. But I also think that a .333 winning % is so pessimistic that it isn't a reliable guesstimate to use. As this team showed last night, the offense is good enough to pick up the team in even the sloppiest of games. I think Peavey's post #241 is an excellent one, and I was actually having the same 'debate' with myself after the game last night. To play my own card with his sentence at the end, I hope TOR falls out of contention in another couple of weeks & the Brewers pursue Roy Halladay.
  18. DeRosa's a nice non-premium pickup by the Cards. As has been mentioned, his production will be a nice upgrade. Doug's hands are tied because there isn't anyone available at this point. Except that Roy Halladay has been diagnosed as ready to go, & will make his next start (Monday).
  19. While certainly an extreme example, the logic that something just 'is what it is' & can't be changed (even when clearly it could) would have said no to batting helmets. This issue is something the Brewers should address, and I'd have to think the fix could be relatively simple.
  20. His point is that, beyond the fact that at this point you have no choice but to hope Jeffress gets his act together, you have a lot of money invested in him for good reason. The stuff is legit, and you don't cut him loose for nothing. The Brewers have nothing left to lose at this point, as Jeffress will be cut loose for nothing with one more failed test. What irks me about Jeffress's lack of judgment is that anything can end him now. I know I'm inclined to call 'bull' when players say their positive test results were due to some mistake or some technicality, but I'm sure there have been & will continue to be cases where positive test results may be flawed. How you take away any wiggle room you may need is just beyond me.
  21. I'm not sold on the addiction angle, personally. Call me a cynic, but the easiest thing to do in these situations is to claim addiction. I understand that real addiction is a tough beast to conquer, but I'm sorry... if this is weed, "addiction" is way more likely a smoke-screen than legit.
  22. What's that phrase? Million dollar arm, ten cent head? Yeah, I think ten cents may be too generous. Dime sack head? Unbelievable. I don't even know what to say Dear Jeremy Jeffress: You are a bleeping idiot. Love, Brewers fans
  23. I remember in the replays it looked like his arm just got pulled down & away from his shoulder. Looked really painful once you could see that... must've felt a little like being on 'the rack' http://www.visualstatistics.net/East-West/Witch%20Trials/Rack.jpg
