  1. I dont' think it's unreasonable to assume (as long as we're making assumptions) that a guy Suppan's age, and with his history of a pretty steady, high workload is going to break down somewhat at the end of a season, and probably sooner, the older he gets. But he takes the ball every 5th day! He's reliable! He's an innings-eater! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif People like to point at Curt Schilling and Roy Halladay and say "Ben Sheets can be like those guys too!". What do Schilling, Halladay, or Sheets have to do with this?
  2. But Russ's point was that Fielder's... fielding... has only gotten "worse" in that people are saying it's worse. Nothing you've highlighted there is anything that wasn't already a problem in Prince's defense coming into 2008. I really don't think his fielding was any worse in 2008 than it was in 2007. Funny how 50 HR will make you a better defensive player...
  3. "... An attached marina, where the players can dock their yachts during games... and of course in the right-field gap, there'll be the Hamptons String Quartet, entertaining Johnny Damon & Bobby Abreu as they wait for flyballs... ... They've also got an on-call concierge service. It's gonna take care of any and all bunting situations, so the Yankees sluggers won't have to waste their time advancing runners."
  4. The interesting part of the lead post's question is that imo we got roughly what should have been expected from Dave Bush in 2008. About the same goes for 2007, but as has been mentioned, our IF defense muddies the waters. For people that are looking at ERA &/or W-L record, 2007 doesn't look like the good year that it actually was. Bush in 2009 will be about the same pitcher. If we somehow add an excellent 3B defender, he might be made to look a bit better. I honestly can't complain with him being our #3 or 4 starter.
  5. Lotta risk involved in a 6-yr. deal. I just don't know. There's no question it'd be worthwhile for the first two or three seasons, but after that... seems like a crap-shoot. Not to mention that if the bidding has gotten to 6 seasons, any big-market team would 'easily' be able to fork over a better AAV than $21+M. If you're talking what CC could get over 6 seasons, I'd have to guess that $150M or more isn't out of the question.
  6. I think Brian Anderson is solid. I'm glad to hear he'll be back. Me too, and Invader further sums up my thoughts. I know people find it hard to believe, but when compared to other teams' announcers, Brewers fans are lucky. Congrats, BA, and glad to hear you've got some job security. Hey, your Braun walkoff-GS call even made an Apple commercial!
  7. *Bump* Has this gone un-answered because I'm missing something incredibly simple? I could totally see that being the case...
  8. The Dodgers just offered Manny 25 million a year for 2-3 years. If he accepts that, or something similar, does that take them out of the Sabathia sweepstakes or would they really commit 50 million a year to 2 players? I'm sure they have plenty of money but I would think if they get Manny they don't really go hard at CC. LA can comfortably re-sign Manny & still have plenty of loot for Sabathia. In addition to being a gigantic market, they have a huge chunk of payroll coming off the books this offseason.
  9. No, that's the buzz I heard on it too, Peavey. I'm sure Unit will get a lot of cash next season, but he might be just getting 1-yr. deals at this point in his career. And I agree with Baldkin -- he'd be an ideal target for the Brewers. He doesn't rely as much on his fielders to get guys out, and I don't think he'd decline to the point where he wouldn't be himself anymore. The real question is durability at this point. But he's so talented that you could roll the dice... imo as long as it'd be a 1-yr. deal I've detailed at great length my opinion of the shortcomings of the FA pitching market so I'll just say that I'm firmly against signing any FA pitcher who will cost 12+/per, take a commitment of 4 years to land, while his skills are declining, and be a marginal upgrade over McClung (for example). Simply put, I think the FA pitching market stinks, acquiring young pitchers allows the Brewers to get the most bang for their buck. Bravo, Crew07. This is basically exactly what I think about the FA market this season & the approach the Brewers should have in FA in general
  10. Come on, you're not going to claim the mantle of objectivity are you? You don't look for numbers to support your predetermined arguments No, I'm not claiming some 'mantle of objectivity', but believe it or not, no I don't try to manipulate stats to support some ill-conceived notion I came up with 'cuz I saw it'. Objectivity is a heck of a lot more fun for me, because then I don't get spun in circles trying to convince myself that TGJ can hit. It's not fun for me to make random claims & then hope I can find a 62-AB sample that makes me 'right'. Let's face it, if Cameron werent on the team last year, and we signed him to a one year 10 million dollar deal this offseason, people would be like "what the heck? How is he going to fix the offense?" If by "people", you mean you & aka Pete, then yes you're right. But I would be very happy to add Cameron at a 1 yr./$10M deal. People are getting to the point of ignoring any & everything that might stand in the way of their odd distaste for one of the best CF in baseball in 2008. I really don't understand it.
  11. Why is it good when you find numbers to advocate for your position and not when I use the most recent ones to argue for mine? Tony freaking Gwynn Jr: 2007 VWL (62 AB): .339/.391/.403/.794 Minor leagues (2227 AB): .273/.346/.342/.688 2008 AAA (375 AB): .275/.328/.331/.659 MLB (242 AB): .248/.300/.298/.500 Honestly now, what do you think is the most accurate way to describe Gwynn Jr. as a batter? You can't possibly stand behind a sampling of 62 AB, can you? That's what's wrong with 'your numbers'. You're cherry-picking to support a predetermined argument, not being objective. I take it you don't have another suggestion to replace Cameron?
  12. Well that's a good example of finding numbers to support your desired point. The fact that you're arguing that Tony Gwynn Jr. should not be regarded as someone that can't hit is mind-boggling to me. And if you're talking about Cam's projected runs which is a crapshoot estimate anyway, you should talk about the loss of runs from not spending the money elsewhere. Do you have any other answer for the direct question of "Who would you sign to play CF?" other than Gwynn Jr? Worrying about losing runs & then wanting TGJ play in the bigs doesn't fit together.
  13. I didn't see anyone else comment on this (sorry if I missed it), but am I the only one that remembers gas prices steadily falling heading into the 2004 elections? I 100% know I'm not making this up as a 'seemed like...'. Happened in 2004, and has happened again in 2008.
  14. So did you get out-Mosed, or out-Schrute-ed?
  15. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if he retires. There were several points this season at the plate where Craig pretty visibly was frustrated, and his body language reinforced those thoughts at times too. I just remember on more than one occasion thinking to myself that it just didn't look that much fun anymore for him. Craig's had a pretty darn good career when you think about how hard it is to even make pro ball, let alone the bigs. If he does decide to retire, he should hold his head high & take pride in some of the special moment he was able to be a part of. And imho he's done WI proud.
  16. I sure don't and he seems lost at the plate sometimes. Every big-league hitter does. Problem with your point here is that Cam is still a well-above average hitter.
  17. Bill Castro was interim pitching coach in 2002... perhaps he gets to be pitching coach without the "interim" title in 2009? If Castro hasn't earned his way to the pitching coach spot at this point, I'd kinda just feel bad for Bill. Now, if he's not in tune with 'protecting young arms & pitch counts'... then I wouldn't feel bad.
  18. Melvin did the same thing to Carlos Lee. What bother insulting the guy? Just so you can tell fans you tried to keep him? Are fans really that stupid? I think that many fans, sadly, are. However, an offer of 5/$100M is definitely not an insult. Now whether the Brewers realistically think CC will turn it down... that's another debate.
  19. That's not what he meant, Weeks23. He meant a lot of people said at the time of his signing, 'Well hey, we can just trade Soup after the first two seasons of his deal anyway...'
  20. These ratings are just absurd. Yep. The fact that we could get compensation for Gagne is pretty crazy... amongst many other crazy things here
  21. Wow, nice job Madison on that one
  22. Who was booked?
  23. However, the Dodgers' intentions are an open question. If the Dodgers' intentions do not include following up on their early #1 position in the running for the best available SP this offseason, they need new intentions. I can't believe Rosenthal would imply that re-signing Lowe or Blake might stand in the way of signing Sabathia. The Dodgers have every opportunity to go all in after Sabathia, and that should definitely come at the expense of any & all of those other 4 players.
