  1. I never liked the huge crowds and pepper spray. You're such a bore! You're telling me that hot pepper oil in your eyes & respiratory system isn't your idea of a good time?! And it sucks that they charge money to enter now, but I can understand it. Takes a large police presence, and in general it's just a chaotic mess. Since most of the problems seem to come from non-Madison residents, might as well get some money from the bozos that come to town to 'go crazy'. It would be cool if (I don't know anything about the fee policy) Madison residents got discounted rates... like, say $5 for a non-resident, & $2 or $3 for a resident.
  2. I still just don't see how there wouldn't be a 25-man spot for Dillon as the first RH bench bat. I know his defense isn't helpful, but in the NL pinch-hitters carry value. I think Melvin got (minorly) burned on this one.
  3. Not even Counsell could grit his way to a $3.4 million salary. Only David Eckstein possesses enough scragrittibattliness to attain such lofty goals. Since he's a WI boy, I'm sad to see him go, but performance-wise, I'm glad he's not in the plans. Must've been pretty cool for a hometown boy to be a part of 'his team' making it back to the postseason for the first time in 25+ seasons. Now he & Damian Miller can team up to fight crime as superheros... or something
  4. One thing that you can see pretty easily even without the raw data is just how similar most MLB managers are.
  5. Bradley apparently is a type B free agent so he might not be the worst guy to go with if we end up trading Hart or not picking up Cameron's option. I would love to see Bradley brought in. Would his injury concerns make a one-year deal plausible? And yes, I hate that he's a big stinky jerkface too... but he's exactly the kind of bat we could use. Now if he could just play 3B...

  8. I think Melvin just knew he wanted Macha, but didn't want to interview only Macha & Randolph (minority candidate). That's my complete guess of a hunch.
  9. I know you aren't asking for it to be linked, logan, but I thought it'd be cool for people to see that missed it... or for those that didn't to re-visit it. "Professor Puts a Face on the Performance of Baseball Managers" Graphic of Chernoff Faces
  10. and Brad Nelson being very unproven. Unfortunately Corey Hart proved he could keep his OBP at & below .300 for basically the entire second half. I wish Yost/Sveum would have had the stones to make RF a strict Nelson/Hart platoon at some point -- obviously you wouldn't do that in July or maybe even August, but by September, Hart was killing us. First and foremost Ken Macha is a gentlemen. If you are looking for a yeller and screamer, Ken is not your guy. Thanks for the insight, Mike. Much appreciated. That's good to learn, as I tend to agree with the notion that ~ 75%+ of MLB manager aren't discernably different in terms of their impact on W-L record. I personally thought Macha came off really well at the press conference yesterday. I found his attitude with the press to be refreshing compared to Yost. As fans, I think we're probably really going to enjoy this aspect. Now if our manager doesn't want to reveal an injury status or something, at least he'll do it without being a huge jerk.
  11. I like watching the games but like others, hate Joe Buck/Tim McCarver and FOX's insistence on using bad stats and baseball axioms, so much so that I will yell/argue with the television. I'm glad that: a) I'm not crazy for yelling/arguing with Joe Buck & Tim McCarver & my TV b) I'm crazy for doing so, but I have allies c) Some combo of a & b
  12. The biggest money is in the biggest markets. I think that's just connecting the dots on where the best FA pitcher might wind up. When you add in that one such big-money team (LAD) has chunks of $$ coming off the books, and is close to his home... seems a logical spot to me.
  13. I posted this on The Book's blog, but got totally ignored, so I thought I'd try it here: I want to ask about playing the IF in. Last night's Game 5 provided an intersting result on a play in the 6th inning where the Rays had drawn in their infield, only to see Werth bloop one into shallow CF (Iwamura nearly made the catch), scoring Jenkins. Now, Werth is only a career 38% GB batter (39% in '08), which appears to be at least 'below-league-average' if not a tad lower. Furthermore, TB's Balfour has just a 34% career GB rate (29% in '08). Is the chance at turning a grounder into an out at the plate really worth taking away the chances at other batted balls? A blooper is just one way in which a drawn-in IF can be beaten on a play it could otherwise make. Is this just another 'old baseball' tactic that will never die, or is there more merit to having the IF drawn in there? Geoff Jenkins is about as slow a runner as you could have at 3B, to boot.
  14. KC was definitely a possible destination for Prince. How? Their revenue situation is worse than ours. I suppose any team is a possible destination, but KC had/has to be near the bottom of the list
  15. I can think of 10 so far... at least I think these are all FA guys... Gagne, Sabathia, Sheets, Torres, Mota, Cameron, Branyan, Counsell, Lamb, Kapler
  16. Here's a bit on Macha I found in chatting with a guy in another online community who's a photog for MLB (his blog is here): "Just FYI - take it for what it's worth - I'm in Arizona for the Arizona Fall League and most of the baseball people here (some farm directors, scouts, etc) seem to think [Macha's] a great hire for the Brewers. General consensus is that the A's gave Macha the shaft."
  17. I don't know... that's the kind of thing a beat writer could get spoon-fed from the org. I can't give TH all that much credit there.
  18. I tuned in to each & every playoff game I could watch (& remember to watch) this postseason. Top to bottom, I think this was one of the best postseasons MLB has had in some time. Once the LCS round started, I really felt like it was as close to a 25/25/25/25 split to win as you could realistically get. The 4-1 WS victory for Philadelphia certainly doesn't do justice to how great each of the games were, but that's life. I thought it was a great WS overall.
  19. The fact that that is true despite some comments just a few posts above says something about the sad state we all live in. I'm really happy for you & your team. But your fans were boorish last night, and you know it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. Wow! Iwamura made a hell of a play there though. Just wow. Yes -- sorry I missed this comment, BCin'04. That play made me gasp. I can't believe he got to that ball. I still remember thinking when the Rays signed Iwamura, 'Who the heck is that guy?' I definitely thought it was sort of a token 'Hey, we signed a Japanese player too!' pickup (same offseason the Red Sox signed Matsuzaka). Now I wish the Brewers would have picked him up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif When their CEO/owner/president congratulated the Rays, you could hear the booing. Do those fans realize how dumb that makes them look? No kidding. I think the attitude is that they just don't care. How attractive! *rolls eyes* Idiotic move by Maddon to leave Howell in. Idiotic, indefensible... po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe
  21. The booing of Selig as he presented the trophy confirms every rumor you've ever heard about Philly fans. They are a bunch of classless goons. Morons.
  22. World Series Champion Geoff Jenkins!
  23. That was great to see. He really gave that ball a ride, and there are many RF that wouldn't have even gotten near that ball -- Baldelli is a sound defender
  24. I don't mean anything about his OBP skills. I mean his body, physically. He's starting to look like it hurts to walk
  25. No offense to Joe Dillon, but 33 year old marginal major leaguers aren't usually left on major league winter rosters after hitting .213. Yeah! They're replaced with guys that are even worse. Take that useful, bench player with success in both MLB & the mythical, far away land of Triple A!
