    In addition to the lack of numbers in terms of top-tier SP, the cost to acquire one via trade would be much higher than getting Suppan. However, logan's point on 'bang for the buck' is certainly valid.

    No, it isn't true -- people just can't get away from batting average... which can easily fluctuate like 5-10 point each game at this point in the season.

    It's an interesting question, but I don't think signing Johjima indicates anything about Seattle's plans with Clement. They'd likely have zero trouble shipping Kenji off to a team that needed a C. EDIT: Ok, so I add something aside from 'no', I think I'd very much do a LaPorta-Clement swap -- with no disrespect to Matt. If he's good enough to land Clement, I'd take that as a compliment.

    Good points, jeffyscott. As for your final question, I'm almost positive that happened to Estrada last season more than just once or twice. It is really hard to compare what are two almost entirely different situations/scenarios. And I agree that the way the article Hauricourt cited evaluates completely ignores the fact that Kendall is most likely due to regress this season. However, I think I can confidently say that I recognize the value the 'Pitcher 8th' practice provides. When this was first proposed, I nearly immediately discounted it as providing anything more than just equal value to batting the P 9th. Now that we're into the season & have been able to watch the way Ned's bottom of the lineup works in actual games, I recognize its merit immediately. Yes, there have been & will continue to be instances where we have the pitcher batting after Hardy & perhaps others have gotten on base. But there have already been numerous instances where you can clearly see the upside of the strategy. Kendall using his on-base ability ahead of Weeks (who provides even better OBP & also some serious HR/XBH pop) imo is going to generate a lot more scoring chances than ensuring your 8th-best hitter comes up behind Hall & Hardy. I think the sequencing of hitters 9-7 so far has provided much better results than sequencing them 1-8. I'm willing to admit that my perception could be trumped by reality, as I know not having Hart/Braun/Fielder hitting #2 shoots the entire 'P 8th' philosophy in the foot, to a certain extent.

    That's probably low ace value for a very average pitcher. Nothing against Suppan, but I don't see why any team in MLB takes that contract on straight up. That'd be foolish. I agree with your final point -- as long as the Brewers look at those final two/three seasons as basically having $2-3 mil. 'buyout' options, then Soup could be dealt... and I believe rather easily. No, we won't get top-flight prospects, but that's not really even priority #1 in possibly dealing him. Suppan is a league-average innings eater, and that carries a lot of value. You mention that "Every team has options -- contending teams usually have more." However, if you look around at the contending teams in the NL, I don't think there's a rotation that wouldn't be improved by adding Suppan. The Phillies run out Adam Eaton & Jamie Moyer as 2 of their rotation guys; Atlanta -- Chuck James & Jeff Bennett ( http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif yes, that Jeff Bennett); LAD -- Esteban Loaiza (& Derek Lowe has arm problems now, iirc); Arizona -- Edgar Gonzalez, Doug Davis, Randy Johnson; SD -- Randy Wolf, Justin Germano; NYM -- Nelson Figueroa. I won't look at the AL, just since my point is a general (as opposed to specific) one. I also haven't proposed each of these pitchers to compare directly with Suppan & hash out 'who's better?' I'm not out to flame your post, I just think there's a lot of assumptions made that Suppan doesn't provide much value (not that you argue that explicitly, adambr2). I heartily disagree with those notions.

    Lou Piniella is quickly becoming my favorite manager because he doesn't make bone-headed decisions the way Ned does every single night. Lou is vastly overrated. I'm actually glad to have Yost over Lou. At least Ned isn't constantly putting on the h-&-r, and pinch-running for his star players. Lou is very much a small-ball guy. We're lucky that Ned isn't, imo.

    For the Yost defenders: chalk another loss up to the brilliant thinking that is Yost. While I agree with you that having the IF in for that situation was not the best move, there is absolutely no way you can hang this one on Yost. The offense was equal parts poor & unlucky tonight. Tonight's game is a good indication of why even the best teams lose at least 50 games.

    How? They are playing bad right now and they're more home run/slugging hitters than they are on base guys. It's like a jump shooting basketball team. When the shots fall the team is great, but when they don't it's ugly The team was called "bad" on offense, and the quote mocked the fact that we have 4 or 5 legit 30+ HR threats by calling them "sluggers" sarcastically. Ridiculous.

    That is only called if 2 are on.. Iirc, the IF fly is called if there are runners on 1B & 2B, or bases loaded, with less than two outs. In other words, you could have runners on 1B & 3B, and the IF fly rule would not be in effect.

    Ugh... Corey... Fielder has been slightly better this year on D. So far he's 20th of 29 eligible first basemen in RZR and in the middle tier of out of zone plays. I have issues with how he picks balls in the dirt, but statistically things are on the up and up. Thanks for that... hadn't even bothered checking any stats yet this year.

    He was safe on a feet-first slide into 3B, but then his momentum & Jorge Cantu kind of pushing him (their legs were tangled, hard to explain) carried his foot off the bag, & Cantu kept the tag on him for the out.
