  1. I'd say the chances of Matt posting a 1.200 OPS at Nashville this year are small enough to not even worry about it.
  2. I just like the idea of going with a fast rising college arm in the first round and supplemental taking the highest ceiling bat and highest ceiling arm. I really like your strategy/thinking here. IMO the supplemental rounds are decent chances to take shots on guys that fit the Brewers' recent mold of high-risk/high-ceiling players.
  3. That's gonna be a pretty sweet story for your son to tell his buddies when he gets old enough to appreciate it.
  4. Wow - that's sweet. BTA, I don't get your vague reference.
  5. I have to be 'that guy', sorry... what's "Pocket Doppler"?
  6. Adding Crisp would be a solid fit for CHC. The idea of Pie facing RHP & Crisp LHP seems alright... plus then you have another plus OF defender so you can remove the human liability from LF in late innings with a lead.
  7. Cole Gillespie -- This was the 3rd guy that really stood out to me. Hit a towering foul fly ball one pitch, then blasted a no doubter right after. Looks like a guy who has a clear idea at the plate. I'm really taking a liking to this guy - great BB rate from college has certainly translated to pros. I'm really looking for Cole to shoot up to AAA ball this season. He'd make an incredible 4th OF once our starting trio is LaPorta - Hart - Braun, and could plausibly play his way to one of the starting corner jobs if/when LaPorta takes over at 1B for Prince.
  8. Super-fantastic! My son reached up and gave his boy the matchbox car that he had taken a liking to! You should be very proud of your boy. That was my favorite part. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Prince was in a foul mood on 3/3 because a fan was razzing him hard about his contract as he was leaving the field via the tunnel in the 6th inning. Prince launched a few f bombs and challenged the fan to come down to him and say that. Prince then said he would not be signing any more autographs (he was signing again on Wednesday after taking Tuesday off), and the fan was escorted out of the stadium as some fans awaiting autographs were very perturbed. That's really disheartening. Come on, Prince. Time to show some maturity. During one stretch where Braun was having an extended session, I felt like I was under artilliary attack as Braun hit 9 of 10 pitches out to basically the same area. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif Cameron has been working extensively with him on his outfield play - 45 minutes straight during Tuesday morning. That's great to hear. Mike is apparently already truly one of the guys, and Ryan really couldn't have hoped for a much better tutor. Thanks for the reporting, molly fan!
  10. Manager Ned Yost first began toying with Kendall and Rickie Weeks as dual leadoff hitters when he was considering batting Ryan Braun second. Mike Cameron will hit in the No. 2 hole instead after he completes his 25-game suspension, but Yost still likes the idea of Kendall hitting ninth. Wow. As an unabashed Yost-frustrate-ee, I have to bring out the props for Ned here. Not only has he selected the proper #2 hitter, he's been open & objective about any sort of lineup re-arrangement. I think the placement of Cameron at #2 & Kendall at #9 is a great sign that Ned has grown as a manager. We can hypothesize that perhaps he'd never have considered this without Simba around or whatever, but it sounds like the Brewers organization contributed well all-around here - The team's assistant scouting director, Tony Blengino, and statistical analyst Dave Lawson suggested that such an arrangement could help the club score 25 to 30 more runs. Great to hear that not only do we have a stats analyst, but that his recommendations are taken under serious consideration, too. +5 to Mark A., Doug, Ned, & Co.
  11. All the Brewers need is to make sure Ned's not bringing TBow in with runners aboard. There are enough solid options in that bullpen that Ned doesn't have any more excuses for bringing Derrick in with anything aside from 0 baserunners.
  12. I am, and want to revisit something you posted: I think we'll get them at Cameron with Ty Lawson back. Kind of hard to win without actual point guards. Agreed, especially since Duke's perimeter D can be horrid. I think UW would have a much better shot at beating Duke than UNC. Just tuned in, so nothing to add about tonight's game yet. EDIT: Ok, so Gerald Henderson is one of my favorite non-Badgers.
  13. But even with all of his walks, his whip was still 1.09....which...I guess was lucky? Actually, yes. But it's just because the things that play into the WHIP are lucky. W = BBs, which was one thing Marmol was doing poorly. IP is obviously largely out of his control, so we're left with H. A pitcher's good stuff can contribute, and it's not unheard of for players to keep BAA down... just not to that kind of level. Did Marmol pitch well last year? For many IP, yes. However, he also got a lot of help from good D behind him, and old fashioned luck. I don't care how "lucky" a guy is when he's got a .161 BAA, a .295 OBP, a .217 SGL and an OPS of .512 all while he was so called "lucky". But the point is that he's lucky to have those numbers, not that in spite of that production I still arbitrarily think he's lucky. I think to have numbers that low is aided significantly by 'things out of the pitcher's control.' However, it's shorter to just say 'luck.'
  14. The whole point of protection... The notion of "protection" is totally overblown imho. I genuinely believe it largely stems from the reporting done in NYC during 1961 that the only reason Maris had a shot at Ruth was that he had Yankees legend Micky Mantle batting behind him. The idea of "protection" just doesn't come into play that much in reality.
  15. I don't think it is fair to criticize the Brewers when they put the money on the table and Prince/Boras turned it down Exactly why so many dismissed Prince's comments/'concerns' immediately.
  16. So even if Gwynn's only a defensive replacement/pinch runner when Cameron comes back, and even if Vargas only throws out of the BP, I'd still rather have them and their depth than trading for a minor leaguer who's not likely to do much for you in the future, and nothing for you right now. By "minor leaguer (or two)" I didn't mean "invalid(s) that won't ever do crap for the team"... I mean talent that hasn't yet reached MLB. You don't get good MLB players in return for guys like Vargas & Gwynn, Jr. But you can get talented young players from teams that have advanced needs. IMO the kind of depth Vargas & Gwynn provide isn't worth over-valuing.
  17. No, the fact was he was dominant. The simple fact is, his ERA last year in the second half was 1.74. His BAA was .161. OBP .295, SLG .217 and OPS, .512. Those aren't perception, those are real actual stats. Again, I'm not overly concerned with a guy who walks people on occasion if people can't hit him, and if he K's a ton of people. More over, I don't care if a guy walks 3 guys an inning if his BAA is .161, and his ERA is 1.74. The stats you're citing as ones for which we should praise Marmol are the ones over which pitchers seem to have little to no control - BAA & ERA. Forgive others if they see that as being luck-based. Sure, it meant Marmol was nice in 2007, but it gives you no indication how he'll be in 2008. The BBs on the other hand, are a huge red flag moving forward. Marmol was dominant because he was lucky. More over, I don't care if a guy walks 3 guys an inning if his BAA is .161, and his ERA is 1.74. So you want to take your chances with a guy that BBs 3 per inning? Glad you're not running my team. 90%+ strand rates come and go. Extreme luck plays into a guy only giving up a .161 BAA, which then obviously affects his ERA. Marmol will not replicate the kind of season he had in 2007 very often, if at all again in his career... unless he can get his BBs under control - and his track record suggests that his BBs were one of the few things in line with career norms in 2007.
  18. Didn't some Ovechkin guy in the NHL just sign like a 18 or 20 year contract? NYI goalkeeper Rick DiPietro. Which has nothing to do with whether or not a 10-year contract is a good or bad idea. I don't understand why anyone's trying to compare two sports with salary caps to MLB. Doesn't make much sense.
  19. Because they said quite clearly that they only rank prospects that they have seen, omitting those they have not. Thanks for clarifying. I guess I'd assumed those who ranked here had seen enough of the prospects... though I think that is likely still very, very true. I respect the style of MF's ranks, because I understand why you'd want to see for yourself, but if the talent is as thin as you're hinting, then Inman should probably be on the list. As they mentiond, Will's pretty darn likely to transfer that Brewers-org. performance over to SD.
  20. His unusual body shape makes him unique and gives him character. Which is tragically also the same reason why this: He is going to challenge Hank Aaron, Alex Rodriguez, and Barry Bonds for the all-time homerun champion title. is highly unlikely, sadly. Prince Fielder gets more standing ovations than all the other Brewers combined over the last 25 years. Not sure what that's all about... Prince is an incredibly gifted hitter - already a better one than his father ever was. He's very motivated to continue his improvement, but I think it's an outside chance at best for the Brewers to even have a realistic shot at retaining him, let alone whether he'd want to sign here or not.
  21. "It's too early in spring training to panic and go crazy over that stuff," said Yost. "But I expect somewhere down the road to start seeing command sharpen up. If it doesn't, then we have to sit back and evaluate things. I won't sit here all spring and watch guys do that." One thing I think Ned does well is that, for the most part, he doesn't overreact to small-sample player performance (matchup-'playing' aside). Probably his strongest attribute, and why he's been so instrumental in helping to develop the young guys. I just hope Ned has grown along with them.
  22. Vargas has more value than Gwynn It's literally impossible for me to agree more with you. My dream deal would be to ship Vargas + Gwynn for a minor-leaguer or two.
  23. Just voted from the home cpu... Brianna's down 953-802
  24. The Wii version must be better than the PS2 version. I just played that for a couple hours, and man alive did it suck.
  25. Played The Show 08 just now... it's the same game with roster updates in terms of straight gameplay (I didn't try the RTTS). Still a very solid game.
