  1. Agreed on Cameron over Willits. Willits, though, maintained a .397 OBP throughout minor-league play (1500 + AB) with a .397 SLG. Isn't that any indication that he can continue to post .375-ish OBP rates, even with putrid power?
  2. I don't think the player's union has the unilateral power it once did in terms of drug testing. The Clemens press alone has trashed that to pieces - as if it needed any more trashing. I'm just not convinced that MLB/MLBPA can stonewall this much longer. It really isnt the steroids that they are worried about it is the fact that MLB would have the blood of the players and they are worried about MLB testing it for other drugs. I have to ask - what's the big deal? Wouldn't it be helpful since many guys use other substances as masking agents? I don't think the test results should be looking for recreational drugs, and I'm sure that language could be agreed upon... then again, there's Don Fehr... I don't want some horrificly strict, we-test-and-bust-you-for-any-drug policy, but resistance to blood testing at this point by MLBPA will be bad news for them imo. The players already look terrible since the Mitchell Report/Bonds saga/Clemens saga - where's the leverage to refuse it? They can no longer claim PED use/abuse is not a rampant problem.
  3. The difference between Pie struggling through a year and getting a legit backup and playing Pie part time could easily be the difference between 1st and 2nd place though. This is very true. I wouldn't go out and sign some stud CF to replace him, but adding a little CF depth to the organization would still be a smart move. Agreed - actually, adding Willits probably makes more sense than adding Roberts. Lower price to acquire, helps at a position of need, and provides similar (if not better) OBP. A split CF of Willits/Pie would really concern me as a Brewers fan. The lack of a solid SS is, I think, obviously the Cubs' biggest weakness in terms of position-players. Roberts would not help there, and landing him would basically take players the Cubs have said they don't want to deal. Does LAA do a Gallagher for Willits swap? I'm not sure how much better the Angels could/couldn't do, but Gallagher's no real prize.
  4. Good point(s) on Chris's all-around skillset, oz. He's really a gifted athlete. Parra's role in 2008 I expect will be crucial... albeit limited in terms of MLB IP.
  5. I don't know, as long as there aren't any concerns about Pie's swing itself, I just can't bring myself to value ~ 300 AB over the ~ 2200 from his minor league play. Especially when you add in that he was young for every stop except AAA in 2007 as a 22-y-o... but then again, not many are repeating AAA at 22 as Pie did last year. He's hit more than impressively in his career save this past winter ball & some spotty MLB AB from 2007. Wouldn't a club be foolish to weigh his recent struggles heavier than a much longer track record? Willits won't really get very much playtime in LAA. Vlad, Anderson, Hunter, Rivera, Mathews, maybe some AB's by Figgins. They also have other DH types. There just isn't extra room even though he probably should play over some of those guys. Ah yes, I'd forgotten the acquisition of Hunter. Willits would be a nice job of selling high for LAA, but that should only decrease the chance they'd take anyone off the Cubs scrap-heap. Maybe Gallagher?
  6. how many of the Brewers' 3-run plus blown leads were games in which Capuano started? Some of that obviously is attributable to the bullpen, but I think alot falls on the starting pitcher if he couldn't protect a sizeable lead (or pitch deep enough into the game to get the ball to the back end of the bullpen) Much can be attributed to poopy IF defense, too. Capuano had the worst 'bullpen support' in 2007 of any of our SP, as well. Not sure about run support, though.
  7. Agreed, bobskube. At this point, the players have zero credibility on which to stand and claim that their privacy would be invaded. Imo it'd be worth whatever court battles/work stoppages may result.
  8. Hey - any insider news is great! Thanks a bunch. Names he told me the Cubs are willing to trade are Cedeno, Theriot, Gallagher, Fontenot, Marquis, Dempster, or maybe even Pie. If you were LAA or BAL, what would you want from that relative scrap-heap? Pie is the only guy there that'd interest me, aside from maybe Gallagher. Willits has great value for LAA's lineup, and I don't know how much they'd improve by dumping their best OBP guy for a middling SP or fringe SP prospect. In reverse, I see Pie as way to steep a price for a CF that gets on base well, but has zero power... and Pie will be better than Willits in not too long imho.
  9. Pie on the other hand, didn't hit a lick in the majors last year and won't leadoff even if he's the starter in CF. I get that he isn't a leadoff hitter. He's just a much better option than Willits for CF imho. If they aren't willing to part with him to land Roberts, doesn't that say something about their opinion of & commitment to him? And I'll take his nearly 2200 minor-league AB (.826 OPS) as a much better indicator any day over 177 AB in a part-time role from last year. Pie was horrible this winter too, they can't be happy not having a viable full time backup for him. That I did not know. How many AB are we talking about, though? I think that between Murton & Fukudome's ability to play CF, there's plenty of support for Felix.
  10. Isn't it pretty likely that this was an injury he'd had for some time? As in, a partial tear that got fully ripped on some odd tweak during a drill? I'm very interested to learn more about this.
  11. Is there any reason that both the 'national tour' and 'snows in Oct.' can't be made? If I have to pick one, I go with the 'snows', but they're both stellar.
  12. No way they go after Willits ahead of Pie unless there's been a sudden strategical change & Pie is involved to land Roberts. I'm not sure if we can tell that this means/doesn't mean anything about a trade for Roberts. Isn't it just as likely that they inked Cintron in lieu of Roberts? Honest question.
  13. Imho, the degree of difficulty on the 'blow out the candle' dunk is being overrated. The incredible part there is Green's vertical, not that he blew out a single candle... though I do admit being skeptical at first, thinking that his breeze had blown it out. After you take away the parlor trick, it was just a simple tomahawk dunk - an impressive one, but not jaw-dropping imo. Kenny Smith could tell from his seat that Green had blown out the candle, and he was screaming about it. A lot of the players caught on right away too, it appeared, so I don't think the judges were oblivious to it. The tip-back-to-his-RH dunk by Howard was far more impressive, imo. EDIT: And if we're going with a gimmick, give me Superman any day of the week! That was hilarious. Couldn't get this to embed for some reason, sorry: Howard 2007 dunk warmup http://www.alexrudloff.com/media/2006/08/dwight-howard.jpg http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/11e259994a82a36f2b7ecb41b9ac17d60a94c49.pjpg
  14. You see, Tim, the reason I stuck with Mench at Wrigley goes back to the Wastutju tribe in ancient eastern Africa... they had a saying... Great call, luke! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  15. I fear that one thing Eric may find to still be 'minor-league' about Milwaukee is the caliber (or lack thereof) of sports journalism. Given past events, I see no way he gets any real hard-hitting questions. I hope this is over & done with today for the Milwaukee media. I really don't want to have to encounter stories about 3 years ago running during what should be a very enjoyable 2008.
  16. No, I do not blame Yost for the fact that Turnbow is a head-case who often loses his mind with runners on base. That's Turnbow's fault. I blame Yost for putting runners on base for the pitcher who has proven he is a head-case who often loses his mind with runners on base. That's his fault. Right on, adam. The 'strategery' Yost employed by plunking Pujols lowered our chances to win by something like 10%. That's a horrid decision, and it highlights what (imo) most of Yost's critics on here despise about him: lowering the chances of success. Sure, no manager is perfect, but there are plenty of guys that know how to play the odds. Heck, when the Brewers were a mathematical long-shot near the end of 2007, he infamously claimed, "The math is on our side." He doesn't get odds or how to play them imo, and operates on hunches and future scenarios that usually don't get played out.
  17. So you think he's pitched "well" over the past year and a half? I will concede he hasn't been as bad as the W-L record, and he's had some good games mixed in, but overall, he hasn't pitched "well" in my opinion since the first half of 06. How many times do we have to re-hash this debate about Cappy? Are people still honestly forgetting what gets brought up literally every time? W-L again? I'd be surprised if Chris is anything less than solid in 2008. The things he can control as a pitcher, he does quite well.
  18. that girl who won the first American Idle show, i like her singing. An A++++ spelling for one of my least favorite things on TV! Roy Orbison was an awesome songwriter. He had an ok voice, too, huh? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I like Bonnie Raitt. Oh yeah. If it's a guilty pleasure to love Bonnie, add me to the list of defendants.
  19. Personally, I find it pretty amusing that this thread has been adjacent to the "Bored out of my mind thread" all day long. That's exactly what I was when I tuned in for a few minutes today. Hey - at least they can say the ASG packs all the excitement of a regular-season NBA game! EDIT: watching the dunk clips now... this is the best group of 4 I can recall getting together for the dunk contest in some time. Kenny Smith: "Superman is here!" ... Charles Barkley, on Dwight Howard: "We've never had a guy in the NBA that's this tall, that can jump like this." That 2nd dunk Howard nailed (throw off glass, tip off glass w/ LH, slam home w/RH) was the best dunk I can remember in a LONG time. Btw, big minus (dumb) points to Kenny Smith & co. for saying that 'no one has ever done anything' like the first dunk Howard pulled. Oh yea, 'no one' - except for Iguodala last year... who was the first to ever try that 'off the back of the backboard' style. So, Iguodala not only got jobbed last year so the short guy could win, he gets screwed over in creativity here, too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
  20. Ok, let me just say that no one should feel guilty for liking Prince. Second that vote for early Nelly Furtado. Just finished listening to Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. I thoroughly enjoyed not only her voice & songwriting style, but the style of instrumentation employed.
  21. brewers19 -- Incredible! MST3K for sure! Sbryl's entry for the 'strange dark bottom' part is sweet, too.
  22. Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the regular season...
  23. Yea, keep 'em, but away with the regularly scheduled wearing. They could easily mix them in for (+ or -) 15 home games. These uniforms were worn for more than 1982, ya know!
