  1. brewcrewreview's comment was a direct response to another poster claiming that people here on BF.net could do a better job as NYY GM than Ca$hman.
  2. Thread title should be updated to reflect the actual nature of the article... 'cleanliness' of teams re. PEDs
  3. Plus, they're metric. ...and speak French. Finally! We can resolve the long-pondered question - "What is the French-Canadian acronym for On-Base plus Slugging?" I mean, french-speaking, metric-aware baseball scissors! Order yours now!
  4. As for Cashman's ill-fated signing of Kei Igawa, I think that was more of a pressure move from the Steinbrenners to respond to losing out on the Dice-K sweepstakes. They went after Dice-K hard and it was a rare occasion where the Yankees lost a bidding war. Signing Igawa was a panic move that was doomed to fail -- the guy's numbers in Japan weren't even all that special...he was basically just junkballing lefty innings-eater over there; I don't know what else the Yankees could have expected over here in the States, let alone in the AL East. That's a great synopsis imo. I don't think Vargas is that much (if at all) better than Igawa. Right now, Wang, Pettite, Moose, Kennedy, & Hughes are all ahead of Kei, so any 'competing' he's doing is for AAA & then 'first called-up due to injury' status. Obviously if you throw Chamberlin in the mix, that puts Igawa at #7.
  5. I think it's only fair to point out that Blazer's credibility level on something like this is extremely high, right? It's up to him as to how he wants to respond to these comments, obviously - but the guy isn't doing this to just be outspoken. His desire to 'protect his source' is more of a professional requirement. Perhaps I've spoken out of turn here, but I don't think it's very accurate to be calling into question his perceived motives or judgment. Seemingly every year, there are plenty of examples of 'injuries' that professional athletes report due to concerns about contractural obligation(s). If a setback was incurred while partaking in an activity that's expressly prohibited in either contract language or team rules, the player has to lie about it, or risk his livelihood.
  6. The core team of young stars that won all those Championships--Jeter, Posada, Bernie, Pettitte, Rivera--were products of Gene Michael and Bob Watson regimes. This is the point to keep in mind. Cashman has finally been granted as much autonomy as he'll ever have in NY - and the best deals to point to are the Sheff trade to Det., and not selling off their young pitching for veterans this offseason. I really don't think you can analyze a guy fairly with all the meddling Steinbrenner has done. However, the Igawa signing has been disastrous - maybe the Yanks needed a contract to take the place of Pavano's (which still has another year left!) as 'least-efficient allocation of dollars' in MLB. I mean, Ca$hman had a deal in place & agreed upon with Vladimir Guerrero, only to have The Boss go out to dinner with Gary Sheffield & negotiate a deal at their table, & ink it that evening. That's a kind of 'drastically different' circumstance to which rluz was referring, methinks. Cashman retained A-Rod, Cano, & their young pitching... meanwhile he's saddled with Giambi/Pavano/Igawa/Mussina/Damon contracts that exemplify the 'old guard' of Steinbrenner veteran idolatry. Not that he hasn't had his own role in the vet. love-ins, but I genuinely don't believe that you can make a fair assessment of Brian Cashman until at least after the 2008 season. I honestly believe that 2007 was his first 'real' season as GM.
  7. Only left-handed scissors.
  8. I don't understand why you feel a dunk necessitates the shooting hand touching the rim. Care to expand?
  9. To logan's post #3 (from casey's first linked article): "With a runner on first base and no outs, any hitter with an on-base percentage (OBP) of at least .206 and/or a slugging percentage (SLG) of at least .182 -- numbers that would encompass practically every hitter in the majors, including many pitchers -- should swing away. The only exception is when a team is playing specifically for one run, in which case the thresholds are a .282 OBP and/or .322 SLG." Wow. I knew the sac bunt was overdone, but - wow! That's incredible. "The bunt is kind of a lost art," said Milwaukee Brewers Manager Ned Yost. "Even our pitchers who are supposed to be good bunters -- and we work on it every day -- they struggle to bunt. A lot of times, our success or failure [in a game] hinges around the bunt. And if a pitcher can't get a bunt down early in the game, it can kill us. Bunting is still a big part of the game, but it's fallen by the wayside in the last 10 years or so." Yikes. I wonder how those 200+ HR factored in last year? (yes, I know the article is from 2005) This article is another good example of how guys insist that they 'know how the game should be played' & aren't open to new & different ideas.
  10. brewerfan82, the best part about that NKOTB picture imo is that it looks for all the world like it's something someone photoshopped the crap out of... but it's real. To me a guilty pleasure is something that is considered to be "bad", have no substance or is cheesy, such as boy bands, britney/christina types, kenny g, etc. That's the way I take it, for whatever that's worth.
  11. So with Clement's status unclear, the Cardinals have only three starting pitchers that they can comfortably count on when the regular season opens: Adam Wainwright, Joel Pineiro and Braden Looper. Ouch. I mean, big-time ouch. Granted, this guy might be overlooking a SP prospect or two, but still. Wow.
  12. Plus, Cam hits for power... something Willits never has & never will do.
  13. Is Prince sporting some braided action for the 'do in ST? Can't be sure from that pic, but we might have some braided madness going on for Prince. Ryan Braun has a lot to learn about playing LF. You can use a glove, Ryan! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif Classic.
  14. Yea, Melvin sort of amended that length from one article to the next. One was 3-4 weeks, another was 2-3. In any event, I think they're going to start him on the DL so he can get up to speed once he's healthy enough to work out/throw/pitch.
  15. Callis may very well be aware of BABIP, but that isn't that common of a term, at least not something most readers of Baseball America are going to be able to identify with. BA isn't in business to break down more complex statistical trends, although they do dabble with them from time to time, and have switched to the BA/OBP/SLG offensive line instead of the previously favored BA/HR/RBI. It's just that, in this specific case, the BABIP was so extreme, and played such an obvious role in his success, that I was surprised to not see it even get a whisper of a mention. But, if BA has only recently switched from counting stats to rate stats (generic, not meant as a broad-sweeping critique of BA), then I guess BABIP is way off on the horizon somewhere. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I'm curious, why is the answer to how a scouting dep't. is broken down interesting? I'd not seen anything on it before... you nailed it. Missed the chart, thanks for sharing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. I just want to say that it hurts me deep down in my musical soul that people count Prince, Elton, & Roy Orbison as 'guilty pleasures'. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  17. JH, what were there, one or two such posts? I'm really enjoying this dunk debate! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That backboard dunk though was AMAZING. Maybe the best I have ever seen. Yes, except that it was even more amazing the first time when Andre Iguodala did it... '07? He came all the way out to the front side of the backboard, too to slam it home!
  18. FB velocity isn't as important as changing speeds effectively, though. Chris's changeup has been a solid pitch.
  19. Wow - just a side note, but 3 picks in the first 35 for the Crew (& 5 in the first 55). That's almost an insult to Jack Z's prowess! Almost. "But was [soto's] improvement the result of losing 30 pounds and improving his bat speed and agility, or was it somewhat of a mirage created by spending a third straight season in Triple-A?" How does Callis just gloss over Soto's freak BABIPs (both AAA & MLB)? That seems irresponsible for a sportswriter/analyst answering this particular question. Also, not good to see Angel regarded as the weakest of the bunch. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif EDIT: Down at the bottom of the story MH linked, there's an interesting answer to this question: What does it mean to be a crosschecker for a major league organization? How is it different than being a scout? Ryan Hall Havre de Grace, Md.
  20. I fully believe that the throw-in dunk was a goof. I don't think that alone won it for Howard. As for the hang-time, that's great... but Howard put his on display too, so imo that makes it a wash. Don't get me wrong, Green's fire-extinguishing hang-time was sweet. I just liked Howard more overall. Do we know the judges don't see replays? Aren't the video screens in the arena showing the replays as they air on TV? The crowd was certainly reacting as though they saw replays. Honest question here.
  21. There is going to be alot of work needed in order to get blood testing into the next agreement. Agreed 100%, and as I mentioned earlier, I believe it's completely worth the effort. Can't MLB do what the (iirc) NFL & NBA do... where the specific results are kept closed, but a pass/fail of the 'league substance abuse policy' is made public? ...the other drugs and what they would be able to do with that info That's the kind of info I'd lobby to keep private or not allow MLB to punish (aside from perhaps extreme cases) for use/detection. Make the language pertain only to PEDs & drugs that are currently punishable.
  22. Are you talking about run support from the offense? I looked this up a while ago for each of Vargas, Bush and Capuano's starts last year. Capuano 5-10 record as starter, team averaged 3.68 runs in those starts. Bush- 10-10 record as starter, team averaged 4.68 runs in those starts. Vargas 10-4 record as starter, team averaged 5.78 runs in those starts. Yes, I did mean that. Thanks for doing the dirty work here. I thought it'd happened like that. Horrid bullpen support, below-avg. run support; it's no wonder his W-L totals struggled. Or - wait - Cappy's just a loser! Cappy and his 83 mph fastball can leave town. Greg Maddux sez hello. Besides, he routinely hits in the upper 80s with his FB, not sure why you call him out for 83.
  23. Interesting on Fuld... lower-ceiling, perhaps more ready now than Pie. Not someone I'd sell Pie away because of, though.
  24. The answer is obvious -- YoGa's a huge Dance Dance Revolution nut. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
