  1. I hate the cool kids!
  2. Pride goeth before the fall. Yeah, that comment was weird. It almost sounds like the players are expected to take responsibility for managing the team. No kidding. There's nothing left for me to say about Yost. The man is not fit to manage a contending MLB team at this point.
  3. AL east goes to boston with superior pitching in the toughest division in baseball. bos-98 wins ny-91 tor-88 tb-80. The Yanks' pitching will be vastly improved from last year. Hughes & Kennedy should make the rotation from ST, allowing Joba Chamberlin to start the season in the 'pen. Early rotation: Wang, Pettite, Hughes, Mussina, Kennedy... with Joba waiting to join if Moose's 2007 WOAHs return, or at the first injury. I honestly think it's an open debate as to whether Bos or NYY has the better SP - especially if Schilling misses all or most of 2008. I agree with you that Det. gets no love from the sim, but there's no way they win the AL Central that big, imo.
  4. Just a blind prediction, but I think both Weeks and Hart put up more homers than Braun this year. Interesting... I like it! Way to put yourself on the line, NT. I'm not sure about this one in either way (as in - happens or not), but imo that's simply a great sign of all the uber-talented young hitters we have! Basically, we're debating whether or not we can have 3, sub-27-y-o hitters go 30+ in dongs for this season. Yeeeha!
  5. South Park did it first in the episode where Stan "Darsh" has to win the big down hill ski race at the time share resort. Over the montage song "You gotta have a montage, get a little bit better in every scene, Montage!" The concept made it into Team America, but I think the episode version was better. I stand corrected. What is that, the one episode of South Park I haven't seen?! Stupid... me.
  6. It's kinda like baseball's version of St. Nick's day!
  7. 2008 Nascar, who's ready?!! Ned Yost III! http://www.3rednecktenors.com/images/nasca_.jpg See - he's even wearing his jersey number! (disclaimer: picture may or may not actually be of Ned Yost III)
  8. Star Wars, to be sure! The Fugitive LOTR trilogy Saving Private Ryan/B.o.B. - seconded Henry V - Branagh's version... the pre-battle soliloquy by Henry himself (for Shakespeare lovers, Act IV, Sc. III). Ever wonder where Spielberg & Hanks got their title for the mini-series? "This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispian Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered: We few we, happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother: be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And Gentlemen in England now abed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispians day." Woooo! As South Park has proven, you gotta have a montage.... You, of course, mean Team America: World Police. "Even "Rocky" had a montage!" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Ennder meant a .900 OPS for Fukudome, obv. not SLG. The things I think will happen IRL and not the way it went in the sim for Cubs/Brewers: Milwaukee's BA & OBP will be hard pressed to be as poor as they're projected... CHN will have a really hard time SLG the ball that much better, and in general, improving the offense by ~ 100 runs (as mentioned already).
  10. BABIP = (H-HR)/(AB-K-HR+SF) I mentioned it bc sometimes it's just good luck to have a high BABIP, sometimes it's due to hitting the ball pretty hard, and probably in most cases it's a bit of both. I'm looking into BABIP & HR a bit more... if I find anything that looks to correllate, I'll share it (I'm expecting that I probably won't, though). In his 767 minor league at bats he had a .313 AVG with a .572 SLG. Now, he gets to the major league. The most competitive league in the world and in 451 at bats he hits .324 with a SLG of .634?!?! 62 SLG points higher in his rookie year in the bigs?! We even still do not know the limit of this guy yet! 60 HRs seems very possible. .450/.516/.964/1.480 -- there's your answer for why Braun's SLG was so high. His line v. LHP, that no one under the sun posts in anything but a small sample like Ryan's 111 AB v. LHP last year.
  11. Braun's BABIP of 1.000 on balls hit over the fence is highly sustainable though, the subset we are looking at. What about the 15 HR v. LHP in 111 AB, though? That's a skew-worthy rate, isn't it?
  12. I don't think hitting ahead of Prince will ensure any sort of power advantage for Ryan. At the most, imo, it'd equalize the relatively large gap Prince has on him.
  13. Braun was on a 48 HR pace for a full season last year (as a 23 year old rookie). Assuming he progresses, I don't think it'd be shocking if he hit 60 but it'd be pretty surprising. With a pretty high BABIP (that is, imo it's unlikely for him to sustain .367) & an unsustainable line v. LHP (.450/.516/.964/1.480). I don't think you can find much accuracy in referring to the pace he was on in 2007, since it's largely due to unsustainable factors imho. 15 HR in 111 AB v. LHP! No one keeps up that clip.
  14. Prince is a guy for whom 60 HR wouldn't shock me. Braun is not.
  15. Olivo was horrendous behind the plate last year, with 16 PB! That was tied with Jose Molina (SF) for the worst in MLB, and a worse total than Piazza, Estrada, Javy Lopez, or Barrett (just for a few ex.) ever posted. Only Pierzynski & Posada came close in '07, with 14 & 13, respectively. Add in Olivo's career line of .239/.275/.405/.680 (2007: .237/.262/.405/.667), and I'm extremely glad Melvin did not make an effort to sign Miguel. That's right... a line with an even more extreme split between horrid OBP/decent SLG than Johnny Estrada's! In other discussion, I came across some interesting info that may support the 'Kendall calls a good game' theory. For all of Oakland's SP from 2007 (but using career splits) with 15 or more starts, only one (the late Joe Kennedy) had an OPS over .705 with Kendall as their C. Blanton was the only one over .700 (.705). Fwiw, the Oakland SP from 2007: Blanton, Gaudin, Haren, DiNardo, Kennedy, Braden. (I didn't include Dallas Braden in this 'study', as he'd faced only 72 total batters with Kendall behind the dish, so imo too small a sample.)
  16. I just don't think Blanton would fare well at Great American Ballpark. His GB rate (career 45%) is not extreme, and he's been much more successful at home in Oakland on his career. Home: .251/.297/.377/.674 Road: .290/.338/.433/.771 Yes, he's given up 29 road HR to 28 at home, but that ratio would certainly skew towards a greater home total if 'home' becomes Cincy. His HR/FB rates from the past two seasons ('06: 6.8; '07: 6.5) simply have to be products of playing at Oak. Unfortunately, I couldn't find his Home/Road splits on HR/FB. Bear in mind that SafeCo Park (another big-time pitcher's park) is one at which the A's spend much of their time on the road, too. Imo Blanton outside of Oak. & the AL West would not look nearly as enticing.
  17. What's funny is that I've been trying to figure out some way to work that in, too, sbryl. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. I guess we know what he was up to before the Nats signed him? He's just a big earner, man!
  19. Happy [bF political scene word] Birthday ac! Hope Madison was kind to you tonight.
  20. Which was what made/makes it so awesome. I remember thinking at the time that it might have been the best 'pitcher's' pitches I'd ever seen, esp. given the runner on 3B & who was batting.
  21. I'll never forget the CU he used to K Derek Lee in 2007. Iirc it was at Wrigley, and the Cubs had a chance at a rally (w/2 out, maybe?). Don't know if it was first half or second half of the season, sorry. That was the filthiest CU I've ever seen Ben throw, and it came in a total pressure-cooker of a situation. Lee was talking to himself the whole way back to the dugout. It was a 2-strike pitch, and you could tell Lee hadn't even considered the possibility of a CU. Masterful pitching by Ben. Any help on clarifying the game here would be appreciated. I'll take a look through the video highlights at brewers.com tonight if I get the chance... maybe it'd be in there.
  22. Extra points for using font that's basically identical to Star Wars! If I were knowledgeable about photo-shop or whatever you use to generate these, I'd have already submitted a SW/Force-themed BF.net shirt. Alas, no skillz!
  23. What Hardy did in April/May probably will never be replicated by him again over a two month stretch. I agree with you that he won't sustain that for a full season... but he most certainly can do that again over a small stretch like a month or two.
  24. Thank goodness, BT! Glad for both you & your friend. The randomness of these occurances are what's most frightening about them imho.
