  1. That doesn't make sense though - the contract is that if he makes the 40-man out of ST, he's got a major-leauge guaranteed contract. If Ensberg is good enough to make a MLB roster in ST, his OBP alone will justify the Yanks paying him $1.75 mil.
  2. OK, I'm trying to be equitable here, but I just can't find instances when we said "Great move, Ned!" A key double-switch... Well, To be fair, Ned very well MAY have made a move or 2 like that, and I'm not aware of them. Exactly - when a manager makes the 'right' move, it's because he's supposed to. When he makes the 'wrong' move, it's 'Bring me his head on a platter!' The moves that make you upset/annoyed/irate are the ones that are going to be more memorable - just simple human psychology. When a manager has a successful outcome, it's usually not nearly as exciting as when a player does, and when a player has a negative outcome, it's usually not nearly as frustrating as when a manager does. But I'd surmise that, over the 2007 season, it was probably Ned on the Plus side of the ledger +3 game saving decisions, and Ned on the Minus side, perhaps -8 or so, for an overall loss of 5 games. I think that's a pretty fair estimate of how it probably played out. I'm no fan of Yost, as I think he was one of numerous factors that cost us a significant number of games in 2007. However, I don't think you can point to just him as THE reason the Crew missed Postseason 2007 - just like you can't just point at Braun's D, or Sheets missing time, or Rickie not being healthy, or Estrada estradizing.
  3. it was more in the 3 or 4 loss range and impressing that statistically, 3 or 4 losses attributed to the manager is very, very high. That's pretty high for any individual (player, coach, GM) member of a team, let alone just a manager. My guess is that between Yost & our IF defense, you could probably find almost a 10-game swing from 2007.
  4. Where does 'Fielder being terrible' fit in? Sorry... substitute 'tlb' for 'Fielder.' Didn't think I needed blue there. I think Gross will get most of Cameron's starts the first 25 games, and I think he should be batting 2nd. Ned... ^ ^ ^ ^!!!! I promise you that there were at least 2-4 instances last season where a very questionable Yost decision either costed us a victory or kept us from getting a chance at victory, beyond the normal "hindsight is 20/20" type decisions that you see throughout the season. There were also probably just as many games that Ned 'won' for us, and just as many that players 'won'/'lost'.
  5. I think my perfect offseason this year would only have involved Cordero agreeing to sign for 3 seasons at $35+ mil, and us magically finding a C with a .375 OBP. Since that's imaginary, I think each need was addressed - at worst - adequately. Can a GM do much worse than that, given obvious financial limitations? We made a positive move in CF, and one at 3B, and made a positive move in that what skill Braun does have defensively is being more efficiently used. The bullpen is deeper than it has been in years, with a real chance to outperform moderate guesstimates. I'd be shocked if the Brewers don't win 85 games even with any concerns about position shifts or manager or bullpen. I think 85 was totally realistic for last year. If this team can't win 90 games this year, I'd feel equally disappointed. If we still had Cordero, don't you think the 'experts' would be picking us as the #1? That's funny to think about, since we have a nasty guy who could work late innings starting off this year in AAA. And he's a lefty.
  6. Even though I know over the course of the season, Yost's mistakes cost us at least two games, there were so many other bummers in 2007 that did too. Braun's D at 3B, Hall's D in CF for the first half, Weeks not being healthy (every time I type about him, I get so excited for 2008), Sheets missing starts, Estrada estradizing, Prince Fielder being terrible... What's crazy to me is that I can honestly say I felt that 2007 team had an honest chance to pick up at least 5 more games, and so many problems - most of which have been improved. Sure, Yost overall probably at best had a neutral impact. But not only is Braun in LF, Hall's out of CF (even though I am confident he would have been average or better in CF), and we have a plus fielder (don't forget Cameron has an arm, too) in CF. Yost really has a shot as being as 'smart' in 2008 as he was 'moronic' in 2007. But I have one thing to add - Ned, please *please* don't bat Kendall 2nd. Please. He's a perfect 8th hitter, and Cameron can fill in fine once he's healthy. If you want, you can play around with it in the first 25 games. I can handle that. If you do it more, I will have supressed rage.
  7. Imo the Marbury one doesn't fit, since Stephon threw a hissy-fit about wanting out. Not much the team can do then.
  8. This thread has superseded Yay or Nay as the new Yost thread And so the beast's breathing slowed, as a chill ran through its body. Its face grew cold, its limbs weak. In its eyes, one could still see the glimmer of fight - of hope, but as the lungs rose & fell slower and slower, the fire grew dull. The beast's eyes fell slowly closed, and thus passes - unceremoniously - the greatest villain and hero to ever walk these halls. ---RIP "Yost: Yea or Nay?" thread!---

  21. IIRC, it was Haudricourt interpreting something that Melvin had told him. We here blew it a bit out of proportion, but I think it's only fair to say that Tom was the one who had the conversation, so he'd likely know better than any of us.
  22. I'm not sure the Brewers would do this unless they feel Posey is advanced enough to start a level higher than Paramore. You don't want those two guys taking time away from one another behind the plate, because they both will continue to need professional seasoning defensively (Posey has only been catching for about a year and a half now). Good point - and I certainly did not intend to suggest that they should share time through the system. Again, it's an interesting idea, and I agree that it would add excellent organizational depth at the position, particularly since the club so far has had some difficulty procuring good catchers, but really few teams do. Taking a couple of the best available with some of their extra, early picks may be a similar approach to loading up on pitching while hoping a few of them stick. I know you (& others) have talked about how some teams have used their compensatory picks on high-ceiling/high-risk players. While the individual players themselves may not fit that criterion, the position of C certainly does in my eyes. When I checked the draft board at C, & saw Posey & Paramore, the first thought I had was of Pierzynski & Mauer in Min. a few years back. Granted, that's a situation with the necessary amount of developmetal-time gap between the two C, but it still made me go, 'hmmm...' I'd love to see a comp. pick get used on a C that's a high-risk/high-reward situation. Obviously I'd like to see more than one taken, given the right circumstances (a la Braun & Gamel).
  23. I started to notice that when Carlos Lee was on the team. So it wasn't just last year, and I think that improves the chance of it returning. It's the new hi-five/fist pound of the sporting world. It's not going anywhere. Just think of all the Packers/NFL games where it's a TD celebration. And seemingly any and-1 in basketball evokes it. I like it too, but it might have extreme potential to get played out by the end of calendar year 2008.
  24. Good recommendation on Yeungling. Good beer that many probably ignore bc 'What's Chinese beer like'? (I know I thought it was a Chinese brew for many years. I'm also very unintelligent.) I'm not crazy about Fat Tire personally, but I agree that it's a darn good beer. Now that I can acutally find more of their stuff in the local selection, I've got to give the New Belgium Brewery's products a solid taste. They look to do many other good brews in addition to Fat Tire.
  25. Milwaukee may never again have this much talent together at the same time on the MLB roster again. IMO 2008 is the best shot to win a WS title since the early 80s. We haven't had a better shot since then until now, and there's no reason to expect that the Brewers will ever see a better one. If Yost thought he was under a microscope last year, he's going to really feel the pressure this year. And this time the main sets of eyes hovering over that microscope are going to have a helluva lot more to say about his job security than the countless fans did last year. The patience of Attanasio & Melvin last year with Yost was downright startling to me. Ned will not have that luxury in 2008.
