  1. Furcal is my ideal midseason 'rental' target. I think that he'd fit nicely on this team, and if the Dodgers tank, he might not cost an arm and a leg to acquire.
  2. I've gotten used to it as well. But as someone else stated, Milwaukee had been an 'American League town' far longer than it had been in the N.L.. Most of the 'National League' fans in the Milwaukee era were older Cubs fans who grew up before the Braves came to town. I still miss the A.L. teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, etc., etc. coming to town a few times a year, not to mention that the A.L. Central is seemingly incredibly weak every year.
  3. A year and a half or so ago, a Suppan/Hall/Riske for Young deal would have made sense for the Brewers (financially), but the Texas fans would have mutinied- not to mention that the Brewers had two shortstops. Now I'm sure that Texas would be happy to dump him if at all possible. Amazing how fast a star can dim, and how a big contract can become an albatross.
  4. This was another point of controversy about Selig's conflict of interest as commissioner. Critics felt that he sweethearted the Brewers into the N.L. to capitalize on the potential rivalry with the Cubs, stir fan interest, etc. Personally, though I'm sure that I'm in the minority, but I would have preferred that the Brewers had stayed in the A.L., because that's the brand of baseball that I grew up with.
  5. Not a HOF by any stretch of the imagination, not even considering the fact that he's an admitted juicer.
  6. FYI. If you are on the fence or against this signing, you may want to Google 'Kotsay wife'. If nothing else, I would guarantee that the annual Brewers wives' auction or whatever will see a little bump in revenue due to this signing.
  7. "My real issue with Weeks potentially not being re-signed is that when was the last time the Brewers attracted a player of even his caliber to Milwaukee through free agency? We need to either re-sign our own studs or trade for them like Greinke, Sabathia, Sexson. The Sean Berrys, Jeffrey Hammonds, Franklin Stubbs of the world are the free agents attracted to Milwaukee. Nothing in our recent history makes me think we can attract a Jose Reyes to Milwaukee. You sir, have hit the nail squarely on the head as to why it is so important to resign Weeks. At this point in time, I would rather have Weeks than Reyes anyway.
  8. I'm not up in arms about this like many seem to be, but I do question the motivation behind Melvin giving major league contracts like party favors to guys who should be getting a minor league deal and a NRI. First Nieves and Boggs, and now Kotsay. Seriously, is the competition to sign players of this caliber that heated?
  9. The last Alex that I remember coming from Montreal was Alex Diaz in Bando's first trade. Welcome to the board, and I hope that you enjoy your trip to Milwaukee. The others have posted great advice and I second the recommendation to keep us posted.
  10. Kotsay was a decent player a few years back, but he's never had really any power to speak of. I think the Brewers need a power bat to come off the bench, and Kotsay is most definitely not that. As I said above, he will probably hold down the role that the Cat did a couple of years ago. I'm kind of surprised that both Boggs and Kotsay got major league deals, because I cannot see all three of Boggs, Kotsay and Dickerson making the roster unless there is some type of injury.
  11. As I despise both the Cardinals and St. Albert, I'm hoping that they have an acrimonious split. If this happened, both would probably end up suffering somewhat. I still have a strong suspicion that he's going to end up on the Yankees in 2012.
  12. Agreed. I feel that McGehee can play second without being completely brutal, but I can't say that I think he can play second well. A theoretical infield of Fielder, McGehee, Betancourt and Gamel may be among the worst of all time. As far as Weeks goes, I think that he has the tools and the work ethic to become one of the better defensive 2b in the league, which is just one of the reasons that I'm still holding out hope that he can be retained for the long term.
  13. I agree with you about Hardy. I think Hardy's strength was actually on defense, next to maybe Yount he was the best defender I can remember the Brewers having at short (though I may be slightly jaded from watching Valentin/Jose K out there for about a decade). The offensive production was gravy. No doubt he was bad at the plate in '09, but I think that the demotion to AAA was bush league. I was never sold on Escobar (who I wanted included in a Peavy deal..... bullet dodged), and I was happy to see Melvin get some value out of him while he could. As far as McGehee, I disagree. When Weeks was hurt, he played quite a bit second base. I don't remember in embarrassing himself out there, and that was the year that he was limited by his knee as well. If you want to really nitpick, I'm not sure that saying Casey 'cannot play 3B either' is too much of a stretch.
  14. Eric Farris is not the answer. It seems to me that the logical thing to do in the event of a Weeks defection would be to put McGehee at 2nd and give Gamel the everyday job at 3rd.
  15. A third engagement of Russell the Muscle at Miller Park makes too much sense for it to happen. This team needs a power bat off the bench, which is exactly what Branyan can provide. I'd like to see Felipe Lopez come back on the cheap too.
  16. I wonder if the highlights will be on FSN. Wasn't the Pabst Theater thing televised at some point?
  17. To me it just means that Weeks has absolutley no problems with becoming a FA after the season and possibly already has his mind set on it. If that's true, I wonder not only how much of that has to do with his new agent, but also with Fielder's status. I wonder how much he talks to him about the situation. That could very well be the case. Plus I still worry about how the Hardy situation played out affected things. By many accounts, Hardy and Weeks were very close. Part of me still hopes that the Orioles tank early in the season and Hardy is brought back.
  18. I thought that this storm was supposed to wait a week. Now the local media is chasing its tail trying to cover both Packermania and Strormapalozaa. How are all the cub TV reporters going to be able to not only give us live 'the snow is very heavy' coverage from the interstate frontage road, but also to detail the divided family in which the Packer fan married a gal from Pittsburgh who carries a Terrible Towel in her back pocket? They may need to extend the local news to an hour.
  19. Which is why I don't see the motivation for the Brewers to make such a deal. I'm sure they are very content with Wolf as the 4, as am I. That said, they wouldn't be able to deal for Young unless Texas paid the vast majority of his salary (not happening), or if they were to send a lot of salary back. Wolf is probably their most expendable 'big money' guy, as I don't see them trading Fielder or Greinke in a deal for Young.
  20. I don't see the harm in bringing in any guy on a NRI non-guaranteed contract. Back in the 80's and early to mid 90's, it seems like the Brewers had a handful of these veteran guys every spring to fill out the roster some panned out really well (Fletcher, Randolph) and some became decent role players (Reed, Dempsey, Maldonado, Francona, etc.). If a veteran is willing to come to camp to compete with no money guaranteed, what is there to lose?
  21. I'm getting the hunch that this situation is getting more difficult as time goes on. I want to retain Weeks at a fair price (perhaps a four year deal for a little less per than Uggla) , but I'm starting to get the feeling that the window has probably closed on that. I would attribute most of the difficulty in getting something done to the new agent, because I can't see the team being stupid enough to take the negotiations public without some acrimony going on. At any rate, I would hate to see Weeks walk, but I'm guessing that the recent deals given to Werth and Beltre have put dollar figures in his and his agent's eyes.
  22. I can't see this happening unless Eugene Kane takes over the Brewers' beat.
  23. Please don't get me started on Cameron again. He may have decent career stats in these situations, but the fact that he was definitely un-clutch while with the Brewers cannot be disputed.
  24. If Carlos Silva can turn it around, I guess they figure almost anyone can.
  25. Can you imagine how excitedly you would have clicked this headline a year ago at this time? Baseball Player Quits, Says "I Don't Deserve $12M Replace the name "Gil Meche" with "Jeff Suppan" and you have a dream scenario.
