  1. I'm trying to figure out why people are so dead set against Edmonds. The guy hit well last year and as a LH bat with a little power, he's something this team needs. Going further, he's not the defender that he once was, but I thought that he did a good job when called on. Considering cost and performance last season, I think that he's a better option than Cameron, Podsednik or Dickerson IF he's recovered from his injuries sufficiently to play center when necessary.
  2. This is the one that immediately came to mind for me as well.
  3. I heard that he is hitting around 85 MPH on the fastball in his workouts these days. Based on the fact that he's had setback after setback, I highly doubt that he will be able to pitch much going forward, so I'm hoping that the Cards or Cubs waste some money on him.
  4. Didn't the Phillies give up Sandberg and Bowa for him? Must be a stud. Is this Ivan DeJesus, Jr.? I would guess so, because that's a pretty cool and uncommon name. I used to love getting his baseball card back in the day.
  5. I think you give Gomez the everyday job to lose in center come March. If he plays poorly enough to lose it, you change things up at that point. I'm not getting into the Dickerson thing again, but in a straight platoon, he probably gets 400-450 PA.....not a good thing in my opinion. Deservedly or not, I think Gomez should get first chance- not only because of his defense, speed and 'potential'- but because Hardy was given up for him. If he plays his way out of a job so be it, but I want him to get one more chance before they give up on him. As for shortstop(which I think is the main problem), I think it comes down to spring training. Like it or not, Betancourt will be making the team, and he will be on the roster for a chunk of the season, unless there is a garbage in garbage out trade out there- probably not going to happen. Counsell will be backing up no matter what, because no 40 year old will be able to man short everyday. Basically, I'd say that who starts comes down to whoever plays better this spring- Betancourt or Cruz. If Cruz outplays Betancourt, I could see them going north with all three. I'm not sure if Betancourt is as bad as people says, I need to see with my own eyes before I judge. At any rate, if the team is competing and these positions are a problem, my guess is that Ray Durham type trades will be made with non-contenders in June or July to fortify things.
  6. As I do http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That said, considering my happiness over the Greinke deal and the question marks at short, I'm willing to give the hometown guy Rudy one more run for a ring.
  7. Whatever Pick 'N Save deems fit to include.
  8. I'd prefer Edmonds to Dickerson if he could still play center when necessary. He was fine out there last year, but I don't know whether or not the injuries to his legs/feet are still limiting him.
  9. My Twins fans friends rag on Punto all the time like he's Chad Moeller or something. I'll pass.
  10. I'm glad Melvin is going for it this season instead of playing for 2012 like a lot around here seemed to be resigned to. 'You play to win the game' (quoting Herman Edwards) and if you have a chance to add quality players that will help you achieve this, you do it. The goal is to stockpile wins not prospects. Most 'highly touted' prospects flame out and/or get hurt. Going further, look back on history at trades like this involving multiple young players. Most of the time, the winners (if there are any) seem to be the team getting the 'star'. I can only think of a few occasions (though I'm sure that I may be missing a few) in recent history where the team getting a package of prospects made out like complete bandits on multiple guys..... the Bartolo Colon to Montreal deal , the A.J. Pierzynski to SF deal (which due to injury isn't looking like the steal that it once was). Even the Randy Johnson to Houston deal doesn't look bad 10 years or so later. I'm not so convinced that this team has a two year window to win either. With Braun and Gallardo locked in, and a owner who will spend a little, I see no reason to be so pessimistic.
  11. I'm very cool with Dayton Moore. As for Melvin, I'm still ticked that he let Rich Harden get away.
  12. 'Those' who spoke to Hardicourt must be Brewers PR spin doctors. I highly doubt that based on what I've read from Royals fans. Actually, in my opinion it's not even a given that Escobar can 'handle the position' as well as Hardy at this point in time. Looks like we have a poor man's Jose K. on our hands here, but he did lead the Royals in RBI's.
  13. I'm just going by what I saw. He brings nothing to the table from what I saw. He demonstrated no power whatsoever, and struck out at a pretty high clip, in line with his (admittedly brief) career. In 61 at bats, he scored 2 runs and drove in 5). He's a fringe player in my view, and I don't like the idea of him getting significant playing time- in a strict platoon, he'd get most of the at bats since he's a lefty. I'd rather go with Gomez, who at least showed some flashes of being a player last year (granted these were brief and sandwiched between lots of poor play). Maybe I'm wrong, and Dickerson just needs an opportunity, but I'd rather give Gomez the job to lose before completely giving up on him. His track record hasn't been very good with much more playing time, but he's still pretty young.
  14. I don't hate Dickerson, I just feel that he's no where as good as some here think. In my view, he's a 25th man at best, and if he sees extensive playing time, it doesn't bode well for the team. As far as Gomez goes, I think he needs to be given one more chance for regular playing time this season, considering that Hardy was wasted for him. He's fine in the field, at least. I agree with those who feel that shortstop is a more immediate problem.
  15. You mean other than actually being able to get on base right? His OBP last season was .267. Yeah, I know.... small sample.
  16. Are you guys Dickerson's agents or something? What makes you think that he is a valid option to start in center field? Please don't give me AAA stats either. I'd much rather take my chances with Gomez who is younger, better defensively, faster, probably has almost as much pop in his bat and at least has some upside. The only advantage I can see for Dickerson is that he hits LH.
  17. I think Counsell is the best option. As recently as about 14 hours ago, I would have said no, but it makes sense now. Hopefully, he doesn't gouge the Brewers too much.
  18. I did. Your argument using the low OPS of 'starting' outfielders from the World Series teams right? I think that penciling in Dickerson for an OPS of even 74 is taking somewhat of a leap of faith. He's that bad. I see no upside, and he is one of the oldest position players that the Brewers have, what am I missing on this guy? I'd rather give Gomez a chance to play everyday and twice on Sunday.
  19. Whoops. Let me clarify, I meant to say 'on a good team in major league baseball'. I'm sure Dickerson would fit just fine on a solid American Association squad.
  20. If this was the NBA, Betancourt would be placed on injured reserve, never to be seen again. However since he is basically the only option at short, I would guess that he's the opening day starter. Honestly, he can't be much worse than Escobar was last season- especially offensively. I can't see the Brewers paying $6 million to a guy to sit on the bench, and I can't see them throwing money at Renteria or even Counsell at this point for a slight upgrade. Maybe Cruz will come in to spring training on fire and do his best 1992 Pat Listach impression next season.
  21. We can agree to disagree..... but to me, Chris Dickerson is the third Mouton.
  22. And most people are looking at what Dickerson projects and what he did over his career than 100 PAs late last year. That's what people said about Kevin Mench after his first few months as a Brewer. Did Dickerson even hit a ball hard last year? I can't remember him doing so, and I'm not exaggerating. I'd be willing to throw out last season, if you throw out his rookie season in which he hit well. Looking at 2009, 2 HR in 299 AB, with many of them at bats in Great America Park does not do the trick for me. As for OPS- in his case which would be dependent on drawing walks (his only 'strength) last year he walked at the Shawnon Dunston-eque pace of 6 times in 106 PA.
  23. I don't think that Chris Dickerson can be the starting center fielder on a good team. I'm not sure what people like about him, but from what I saw last year, I'm not even sure he's 5th outfielder caliber. As for Cameron, admittedly he wasn't my favorite player while he was here, and he's pretty expensive, I wonder if Boston would do something involving LaTroy Hawkins with some cash coming back for him. I might be in then. I'd actually prefer bringing Edmonds back if his body could handle playing center again a few times a week. Apparently he is still open to playing, and though he's very old, I thought that he did a great job last season and he'd be a solid lefty stick off the bench. Plus, he wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. As for the starter, I think that you have to give Gomez one more chance. Maybe a better manager will get something out of him.
  24. Props out to Melvin for this one if Jeffress is not included. The only piece in the trade that I'll truly miss is Lorenzo Cain, but his upside is that of a Darryl Hamilton type. As for Escobar- in my opinion, though Melvin waited about 2 years too long to trade him, it's amazing that he brought so much value in trade. I'm not convinced that he's going to do anything in the majors. It would be nice if Hardy was still around. Odorizzi has the potential to be a stud, but he has a long way to go. The Brewers seem to be snakebitten over the years with injuries to thier pitching prospects, so I'll take the sure thing.
  25. Youkilis is playing 3B with AGon at 1B and Ortiz at DH. Boston has no use for McGehee. At this point, McGehee isn't really disposable either. If this is true, Melvin is clearly going for it in 2011, but he also has Greinke and Marcum for 2012. The Brewers would want one of Casey or Gamel to be playing 1B in 2012. I'm so excited about this I forgot about the Gonzalez trade. Back to the drawing board.
