  1. Then no trade. I wouldn't eat a nickel of Fielder's salary. It was absolutely absurd for Houston to make the trades they have made the past few days. The ownership must be hard up for cash or something.
  2. Big deal. Probably and understandably, he's gotten tired of discussing all of this trade talk with the media. People are fooling themselves if they think that more than a few of the current players have any emotional attachment to Milwaukee and the fans. Twenty years ago, probably more than half the players lived in Milwaukee year round. Probably the only one that does now is Counsell. The huge money in pro sports these days has changed the players. 99% of these guys will go to the highest bidder. It sucks, but it's just the way it is now.
  3. Either of these would work for me, especially #1. Number 2 would be fine if, like me, you consider guys like Jonathan Sanchez average and Randy Wolf average to below average. I'm still not sure what people wanted to trade Fielder for- A couple of A and AA pitchers with 'upside' who had been high draft picks? I'd rather just let him walk and take the draft choices that come if that's all you can get for him.
  4. People need to calm down. It was a buyer's market out there. Most teams were trying to dump salary (and still having to eat some of it), and the vast majority of 'prospects' that changed hands were second rate. I'm hoping that the Giants miss the playoffs because of anemic offense again this year. Maybe in December, they will actually offer up some value for Prince.
  5. That happens when you pitch in a pitchers paradise. Let those 2 switch team and watch what their stats do. Unless AT&T park lowers whip and ups k rates, my point still stands.Sanchez might strike out an extra batter every three starts or so when compared to Parra. They both have trouble throwing strikes, and pitching far into games. Granted, Sanchez has been far superior to Parra the past two years (who is on track to be the #5 starter in Kansas City next year the way he is pitching), but I can see him having problems pitching at Miller Park after pitching in PacBell. His road WHIP is 1.4, which is nothing to write home about. I'd take Sanchez as a #3 starter right now, but I'm not trading Hart for him.
  6. Trading Hart for Sanchez is pure stupidity. If this happens, I hope they just throw in Parra in as well, because I won't be able to bear watching the same guy pitch twice every five days. I don't really want to see Sanchez' stats this year either. Manny Parra put together a good first half once too- Sanchez has a track record of being unable to throw strikes with a high WHIP and 5 ish E.R.A outside of this year.
  7. It's pretty apparent that nobody- even including the Yankees, are wanting to add a big chunk of payroll. This is likely a reflection of the economy we are facing right now. My guess is that not only have the mega-rich owners of these teams taken major hits in their personal assets the past few year- at the same time, I would bet that many of the big companies are cutting their expenditures on things such as luxury box purchases, sponsorships and advertising. Maybe it would be prudent for Prince to reconsider the Brewer extension offer after all. I'd be more that a little nervous leaving $100 million on the table given recent developments.
  8. I'm trying to get creative to find ways to bring a legit pitcher to Milwaukee without overpaying in free-agency. Here is an idea that's been kicking around in my head. Jack Z. supposedly loves Brett Lawrie and took Mark Rogers in the first round. I think that it makes sense to offer him Fielder/Lawrie/Rogers this offseason for Hernandez (if Jack Z. still has his job). Hernandez is under control for I believe 4 more years at a pretty reasonable price and would bring a legit ace to the Brewers. I'd even consider taking back a bad contract with him if that's what it takes (can Milton Bradley play right?). Obviously the Mariners just acquired Smoak, but he could DH in the near term. This may also appeal to the Mariners because they could try to flip Prince for even more prospects at some point. Does anyone think that the Mariners may go for this, and do you think the Brewers would do it?
  9. Good. Dodged both of those bullets.
  10. I have a feeling that Prince and Boras may find a soft market out there next winter. The fact that teams weren't exactly crawling all over themselves to trade for him this month is pretty telling.
  11. I have no interest whatsoever in Jackson. The D-Backs ship sailed with Haren.
  12. Overall, Melvin has done OK. Like management in many businesses, it seems his fatal flaw is an unwillingness to admit a mistake and change - the two big examples being the Suppan debacle and Macha. The whole Suppan thing is self-explanatory. Going further, Macha was a poor hire, plain and simple. Five years out, it's pretty obvious that Hudson, Zito and Mulder built Beane and to a lesser degree Macha, not the other way around. Any of us on this board could have managed that team to the playoffs with those guys. Sveum was the obvious choice, but Melvin had to have 'his guy'. I don't have too much of an issue about how he manages a game (though he doesn't utilize the speed on the team and makes the odd decision here and there), but I just get the vibe that he's not popular with the players and he's not an inspiring leader. He pretty much buzz-killed the whole playoff drive mojo (though admittedly losing C.C. contributed as well). If nothing else, Valentine would give the team some spark and try some new things. I agree that digging up Connie Mack isn't the answer as well. He would be another sucky, ex-A's manager. The only reason that he won so many games is that he owned the team.
  13. I think the key thing here is that Macha needs to go. We can debate all day about the value of a manager, but in the end, it seems pretty obvious to me that these guys just aren't inspired to play for him. Say what you will, but he inherited a playoff team and hasn't been able to get them to play .500 ball. Attanasio needs to outbid the Cubs for Valentine. Some of the blame lies with Melvin as well for his failure to shore up the pitching staff. I know that it's easy to say in hindsight, but plenty of guys were available this past offseason that have outperformed the Wolf/Davis combo (Garland, Myers, etc.)
  14. Then they better plan on getting at least two, maybe three new starting pitchers who aren't old and washed up. Not trading Prince and/or Hart is going to make that very difficult. I'm not saying don't trade Prince, I'm just saying now is not the time. No team in the hunt is going to trade a starting pitcher now, but circumstances may dictate such a trade in the off-season and there could be a match for Fielder. Going further, I would probably allow Jack Z. to pillage the organization if he would be willing to discuss Hernandez. Greinke could be another opportunity like that.
  15. Well, in my opinion, you either go for it next year, or you may as well bust the whole thing up. Half 'hearted' rebuilding projects never work, as evidenced by the Brewers for about 10 years in the 90's/early 2000's. I would guess that Melvin wouldn't be very enthused about a rebuild due to job security- and Mark A. does have some extra money to spend this offseason, so I would bet that they are going to give it one last shot next year.
  16. Exactly. There is no point to trade Edmonds for a lottery ticket at best, you will most likely reap 'a guy' like the Bill Hall trade last year. In this case Edmonds made some special arrangements to come back and play and he's busted his butt out there. In my opinion, trading him now would be a bush league move. Something that the Pirates or the Selig-Prieb Brewers would do to shave half a million or so off the books.
  17. Personally, legion ball was much more enjoyable for me than the spring WIAA stuff. No 40 degree games, getting to play under the lights, no need to ride the school bus, 'unwinding' after games, etc, etc. Even though it was more laid back (didn't have practice every day), it always seemed that the caliber of play was better as well.
  18. Exactly. I just don't get why people have been clamoring for trades to be made now. If Hart and Fielder are moved for prospects, to me that's a rebuilding project. The point being that if these prospects are major league ready, why aren't they in the majors now? Look at LaPorta, 2 years ago, he was supposedly 'ready' and he hasn't done squat since. Going further, for the vast majority of young pitchers, there is an even steeper learning curve- even mega-prospects like Buchholz and Hughes had brutal stretches before they started to put things together. How many teams have won with a rookie as their number 1 or number 2 starter? Not many. Looking to add guys who have the upside of a #3 starter (Hudson, Sanchez, and the like) makes absolutely no sense to me when you are talking about trading all-star calliber players like Hart and Fielder. The prudent move is to sit tight and see what happens in December. Generally there are some good arms to be had in trades then.
  19. Well if they could dump Wolf with Prince, they could use the $9 million or so due to him in 2012 to help lure Prince back once he realizes how much he misses Milwaukee. Seriously, dumping Wolf would free up a lot of cash to go towards an extension for Rickie, and leave a bunch of extra money of the books to play around with.
  20. I would kill to have Garner as manager now. He might actually utilize some of the speed on this team. Looking back, Don Rowe did a heck of a job with that pitching staff as well. They had a great bullpen, and it seems like many of the starters had career type seasons that year. Too bad half of the team bailed after the season- they would have had a really nice base for the next several seasons.
  21. That may not be a bad thing considering the Brewers' track record in signing free agents. I would think they hurt their reputation more with the players with the dirty pool that they played last year with Hardy. If Wolf can be moved for anything, by all means do it. As a matter of fact, the only way that I would even consider trading Prince now is if the other team were willing to take Wolf or, at the least, Hawkins with him. On a related note, why do some people assume Dunn would step in for Fielder? Does anyone think that he's going to come to Milwaukee cheaply? My guess is it would take at least 3 years at $15 million per, and I think that's lunacy. With his frame, he has 'breakdown' written all over him, guys that size tend to break down once they get north of 30. I hope the Brewers stay far away from him.
  22. I'd be very surprised if Hart passed through waivers, and at any rate, if the best offer Melvin had on the table was Jonathan Sanchez (and the Giants reportedly weren't even willing to move him), he made the right move in standing pat. 9
  23. Scott is what he is, but I'd say a good trade for the Dodgers none the less. What are the odds that either of the two 'prospects' make an impact in the majors? I'd say pretty low. Unless they are playing with a dead ball, a .296 average with only 11 homers at for a 25-year old converted catcher at Albuquerque hardly screams 'highly regarded prospect' to me.
  24. This would be my list as well. I might actually include 1997 too. That team was right in the hunt towards the end.
  25. Well, I guess we'll find out, because they most assuredly will put him on waivers. Somehow I suspect he'll be a Brewer on Opening Day next year. The Brewers should get a little creative in moving him. If one of the big market teams wants Prince or Hart, they should have to take Wolf as well. I wouldn't have a problem taking a bad contract back in return provided it ended this year or next year.
