  1. I'd bet good money that Suppan and Schoenweiss go north and Bush and Villanueva are gone at the end of spring training. Doesn't make sense, but for whatever reason, Suppan is like the coaches kid who sucks but pitches every game anyway. Everyone else on the team seems to be held accountable for poor play except Suppan. Due to his relationship with Peterson, let's say that Schoeweiss is the coaches son's best friend.
  2. Hmm. Maybe he didn't get that black eye from his nephew afterall.
  3. Outside of one season, Sheffield was garbage while with the Brewers. Therefore, if this list is based on performance while with the team Sheffield doesn't belong. I'd go with the list below. I will say that the dearth of pitching that this franchise has produced in over 40 years is pretty scary, especially in the bullpen.... more specifically, Plesac seems to be the only decent homegrown left handed reliever: C: B.J. Surhoff 1B: Prince Fielder 2B: Jim Gantner SS: Robin Yount 3B: Paul Molitor LF: Greg Vaughn CF: Gorman Thomas RF: Geoff Jenkins DH: Ryan Braun Bench Darrell Porter C John Jaha IB Mark Loretta 2B/SS Jeff Cirillo 3B Sixto Lezcano OF Charlie Moore C/OF SP1: Ben Sheets SP2: Ted Higuera SP3: Moose Haas SP4: Chris Bosio SP5: Bill Wegman Closer: Dan Plesac Setup: Chuck Crim BP: Doug Henry BP: Bill Castro BP: Jim Slaton
  4. In theory, I'm not a big fan of this, because renewing seems to poison the relationship with players somewhat. That said, the Brewers hands could have been somewhat tied here if Gallardo didn't have reasonable demands. Hopefully, he doesn't pout for an entire season and have a down year a la Prince.
  5. LOL...so we're going to have ticket pricing similar to the stock market? I can hear it now..."The Brewers won their 5th straight game today and the BTI (Brewers Ticket Index) rose 2.4% to close at $78.44 for a Loge Infield ticket. Playoff ticket futures also rose 1.5% to finish the day at $168.23." I don't think an auction for the few thousand odd tickets available for Opening Day would be out of line. I'd much prefer this to a lottery that I have no chance of winning, having to pay inflated prices on the secondary market anyway.
  6. That would be more fan-friendly for me, especially on Opening Day. That said, I doubt if the port a potty industry has the lobbyists that the team does.
  7. I would guess these efforts are geared more towards hawking season ticket packages than for creating a 'fan-friendly experience'. Living 'outstate', I would rather pay over face from a scalper for a sold out game than buy a 20 pack of tickets, of which I will miss at least 5-10 games. It was one thing to buy the 10 game plans at County Stadium when the seats were $10-$12 bucks a piece, it's another thing to pay $20 plus for twice as many games just to be able to purchase tickets to the 'marquee games'. If I need to go that bad, I will use Craigslist or a scalper.
  8. Unless your item is something very cheap- or in other words, something you can afford to lose, I think it's a good idea to get Delivery Confirmation for 80 cents on everything that you sell. If you cannot provide proof of delivery, eBay/Paypal will always side with the buyer. Too many losers/scammers out there.
  9. My prediction is as follows: 1. Suppan has an E.R.A. over 6 in Arizona yet still goes north with the team as the #4 starter. 2. Parra is kept as the #5 3. In a cost-cutting move, Bush is cut a la Vargas to reduce payroll. 4. Bush is picked up by the Cubs and wins more games than Suppan and Parra combined. 5. Suppan is finally moved to the bullpen in July after an extended stint on the D.L. for a poorly explained injury after winning only 1 of his 8 starts. 6. The Brewers have a revolving door at the #5 position in the rotation, using at least five guys in that role.
  10. I have no confidence in the ability of this regime to give Suppan a DFA on March 30 if deserved. I would bet a significant chunk of change that he will be in the rotation to start the season no matter how poorly he pitches in spring training. Macha will justify it by describing how spring games are for vets to work on new things. Meanwhile, Villanueva will probably be DFA'd for walking 2 consecutive batters in a split squad game.
  11. Now that Sheets is gone, Weeks had better not get hurt. Hart has assumed Hardy's role as the underachiever scapegoat, and I can see Weeks taking over as the undependable scapegoat.
  12. Good luck with that. Maybe back in the 90's, but for the past two years I've had to grovel around like a panhandler not scoring anything until well after the game started because I refused to pay 4-5 times face value. This year I'm going eBay or Craigslist.
  13. Look up the word "tool" in the dictionary, and you should find a picture of Scott Van Pelt. God, he looked stupid when something didn't happen right according to the script.
  14. I don't think a no trade deal on a one year contract is that big of a deal. Especially compared with the fact that the Brewers gave Suppan a two year no trade clause - not that they could have traded him anyway, but I digress.
  15. I don't buy that Jason Bourgeous or Corey Patterson were better options than anybody, including Bill Hall. Going further, this year, there seems to be more alternatives to Suppan. Last year, the blame lies squarely with Melvin for not lining up more arms. There are plenty of AAAA pitchers out there on the waiver wire that could have replicated what Suppan did. If Suppan is brutal in spring training, it's time that he goes. I don't want to see him trotted out there for 10 or 15 brutal starts to 'work things out'. When the team was losing 95 games a year, that was tried with the likes of Jaimie Navarro, Jim Abbott and Glendon Rusch, and from those situations, the Brewers should have learned that if a guy is getting hit like a batting practice pitcher in April, he's probably going to get hit like a batting practice pitcher in June. This team has a chance to contend, and they can't waste games.
  16. I remember Surhoff saying at the time that it was tough to leave Milwaukee because of the support system that his family had with his autistic son. Ah the good old days, when probably half of the Brewers actually- gasp- lived in Milwaukee year round. My how things have changed in 20 years. I'd actually be pretty surprised if Bando matched Baltimore's offer instead of trying to lowball him though. I wonder who the other player was in this situation. Ben McDonald?
  17. Point taken. That said, if Melvin is willing to make such extreme decisions as sending Hardy to the minors and DFA'ing Hall, he should make another one on the elephant in the corner this fall. If Suppan stinks up the joint in Spring Training- which I would bet on, he better be DFA'd. I don't want this team wasting games giving him a chance to 'work things out'. No need to protect him on the disabled list by coming up with another 'injury' again this year.
  18. I remember Surhoff had a big year out of nowhere in 95 for the Brewers. It was pretty unexpected because he kind of returned to the team by default that spring because he didn't get much interest anywhere else. I always liked Surhoff, but it's been in the back of my mind that he may have wanted to get an edge to get a new contract and keep himself playing.
  19. And with regard to Zambrano, I don't think he's truly on the upside. Of course looking at just his age you could make that argument, but big boy's gotta whole lotta miles on that right arm of his and has been on a fairly steady decline the previous 5-6 years. I don't think that Soto is by any means on the upside either. He was positively brutal last year and could very well be a one year wonder.
  20. This had better be the case. I liked Meeks and basically they got nothing of value for him. My guess is Ridnour is on his way out for Murphy.
  21. Many Twins fans feel the same about letting Gomez go as a lot of Brewer fans (including me) feel about trading Hardy..... namely, 'He's probably going to be pretty good (e.g. play up to their potential) for them'. I have a feeling that this trade is either going to look very good or very bad in 5 years. As far as Melvin screwing with Hardy's service time, I really couldn't care less what Hardy thinks or feels, I'm more concerned how the move affected the attitudes of teammates left over (guys like Weeks who was a good friend of Hardy's by all accounts) towards the organization. I'm also concerned about how the move affected the Brewers' reputation with the player's union and agents/free agents around the league. I don't buy the 'Well Wolf signed here' argument either... the Brewers offered the most cash by far, and he was looking for green only. When Hardy and Hall were sent on their way, the clubhouse had to be poisonous. Two (by all accounts popular with teammates) players who came up through the system are jettisoned for poor performance, while the highest paid player on the team is protected by being stashed away on the DL due to poor performance.
  22. I've wanted Gooden for a long time. I didn't really like to see that Warrick was included in the Bulls deal, but he'd fill his spot nicely. Not sure why he seems to be traded a few times a year, but I think he's a very servicable player. Word on the street was that he was going to get cut by Washington and then re sign with Dallas next month, but with the trade to the Clippers maybe he's available.
  23. Solid move. This promotion should be for the kids anyway, not 35 year old men who wait for 6 hours and charge the gate like the run of the bulls when Prince is signing.
  24. Sorry Doug, that is impossible to believe when you leave a player down just long enough to get an extra year of service time. Yes JJ should have been sent down but he didn't exactly earn his way back.Melvin is so full of it. No way Hardy played poorly enough to be sent to Nashville when a guy like Jason Bourgeois was called up to waste a roster spot. This was a ploy to mess with Hardy's service time, pure and simple. If Hardy deserved a demotion due to performance, surely Suppan deserved a DFA. Why didn't that happen (The 'we didn't have anybody to replace him with' argument doesn't fly with me either.)? At any rate, I'll withhold judgment on this trade. I think Hardy is going to do well in Minnesota, but I'm willing to see what Gomez can offer because I like his skill set- especially at about $6 million less than Cameron.
