  1. Wow.....that's the nicest thing that I can say to the Royals brass for this one.
  2. At least you still have time to change it. That baby was looking golden at halftime last night...
  3. Agreed that this is mostly the NBA, and it's getting worse. I'm not completely up on the new labor agreement/salary cap, but it seems pretty far fetched for Howard to be able to go to another team of his choosing (with another star 'friend') for a max deal without a trade. If that's the case, and I'm the Magic, I'd tell him to pound sand as opposed to doing a sign and trade deal.
  4. My primary fear with Gonzalez is that he gets injured. If that happens, then what? Say what you want about Yuni, but you can't say that he wasn't durable.
  5. They need someone to root for in the tourney since Tubby cant get them there (and when he does he cant win a game). Well... tonight, the Gophs start their pursuit of their third NIT title in the past 20 years or so (though I'm not sure one of them is on the books anymore). Have to give them credit for that
  6. Admittedly I haven't seen too much of Ellis outside of some late night ESPN/NBATV games on the tube, but from what I've seen, he's not content jacking up threes/long jumpers. He seems much more aggressive driving to the basket with a ton more effectiveness than Jennings, and seems to have a good mid range shot. I've seen him completely take over a few games. Obviously, there are warts on defense, but that is generally the case with scoring guards in the NBA.
  7. I was going to post this in the Bucks forum, but I think that I deserves a separate topic. Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing about this Dwight Howard nonsense day in and day out? It's been dragging on for months now. This whole saga basically highlights everything that is wrong with pro sports today. First, he wants his 'friends' as teammates, then he wants to go to New Jersey, LA or Chicago, then he doesn't want to go to Chicago, then he will stay in Orlando if he can choose the GM/coach, now not so much. I don't care how good that he is, why would anyone want this diva on their team?
  8. Ellis can score in bunches, so I like that aspect of the deal. I've seen him completely take over games. His midrange jumper is Cassell-esque and he can finish at the hoop as well. From what I've seen, Golden State fans have a lot of love for Udoh, so perhaps he will add something as well. The problem is that Ellis' size inhibits his ability to guard people, and I'm concerned about his ability to co-exist with Jennings. Maybe the deal will reign Jennings in from a shoot first guy, but I have my doubts. At the least, this deal will make the Bucks much more interesting to watch for the rest of the year, but I have grave concerns about the impact that giving up on Bogut will have on this franchise down the road. Obviously, this deal was made in the hopes of making a run similar to a few years ago.
  9. I don't know about this one. I subscribe to the rule that you do not trade a good big man for a small. I'm also skeptical about the ability of Ellis and Jennings to coexist. Maybe Ellis will reign in Jennings somewhat, or maybe this signals that Jennings is gone after the season. This trade does seem better than most of the others that I've seen out there. Not sure why many coveted Stephen Curry or a pick in the 10-20 range.
  10. This trade confuses me a bit, but I don't understand why the armchair GM's are so fascinated with mid-first round picks. I guess it makes the pre-draft and draft stuff more entertaining. It's like they would rather hold the 12 spot in the lottery next season than have Ellis.
  11. I would never say that a #16 will beat a #1 because it's never happened, but I'm thinking that Asheville has a small chance. I think that the Big East is down in general this year, and Syracuse was not impressive- to say the least- in theconference tourney. Ashville can put up some points and shoots a good FG pct. The key is if they can beat Boeheim's zone. The fact that they have five guys who average in double figures may help with that. Syracuse is a poor FT shooting team as well. All told, I'd say that they maybe have a 5-10% chance of winning as opposed to the <1% chance that most 16 seeds have.
  12. I'll never forget Ford's first game. He looked like a star from the get go, and led the Bucks to a woodshed win on the road against the Pacers, it was like he was twice as fast as anyone else on the court. It was all downhill after the injury though. Too bad.
  13. I think that there may be unprecedented upsets in the first round this year. I've got two 14 seeds in my Sweet 16. St. Bonnie's and Iona (sorry Marquette fans). I think that this may also be the year a #1 seed goes down (I looked at the Syracuse/UNC-Asheville game long and hard). I could see Wichita State or St. Mary's in the Final Four as well. .
  14. I think that there are two sides to this argument, gentlemen. The truth is somewhere in between. Both camps, lovers and haters, filled rank before the first pitch was thrown of 2011. The stat people or those who followed blogs already had it ingrained in their heads that Yuni was the worst starting player in Brewers history. The 'lovers' were either more subjective or contrarian... based on who you ask. I've come out with my belief that while, not a good player, Yuni wasn't as bad as most believe. This is probably because I hate both strikeouts and throwing errors, and Yuni had relatively few of those. Rightly or wrongly, I also believe that 'ranginess' and OBP have become a tad overrated in the past few years. I like to make the comparison between Yuni and Drew Gooden. Gooden was another guy that the armchair blog posters hated from the day that he signed. This is without him ever playing a game for the Bucks, and because of some 'advanced' basketball stats, which I'm not knowledgeable about (nor do I care to be). However from watching the games, though Gooden has some very obvious warts (namely defense), I think that it's hard to dispute that the Bucks are a better team with him on the floor as opposed to the alternative (considering Bogut's injury).
  15. Offensively, I expect him to put up stats like Jose K did in 2000 (prior to the power spike and absolutely ridiculous K totals)- .244/.315/.372 with 11 homers and 125 K's. Defensively, he should be an improvement, but I'm not expecting gold glove caliber defense. In all, I don't expect much more than a slight upgrade over Yuni. I hope that I'm wrong.
  16. Barkley is right. The NBA needs contraction. I'm sure the players union agrees. Just have a 10 team league with two teams in L.A., three teams in Miami South Beach, a team in Vegas, two in New York, Boston and Chicago (the last three can only play home games after March 1st). The problem for trading for draft choices is that with the surplus of terrible teams, I'm sure that many have the same idea.
  17. I don't buy the whole 'he will stay away from big markets' thing. Call me a defeatist small market Brewer fan who has had his heart broken before, but I guess that I'll believe it when I see him turn down an extra $40 million from the Yankees or Dodgers to stay in Milwaukee or return to Kansas City. Yes, he has anxiety issues, etc., but he also seems like a pretty self confident guy. Would he really be that afraid of maybe 50 extra media guys around the team? Sure the fans elsewhere may be more brutal on an under-performing big money free agent (and he'd likely get a big free pass if he stayed in Milwaukee), but I'd take that chance for many extra millions. Some guys aren't cut out to play in the big markets (Eddie Whitson anyone?), but these days there is such a disparity in the money they can offer compared to a team like the Brewers, it's almost impossible for them not to bite. Bottom line, 'home town discounts' still apply sometimes, but usually for lower money veterans like Craig Counsell, not the marquee guys.
  18. Today, I read somewhere that of the remaining games that the Bucks have, only 8 will be against teams that currently had a winning record. I don't know what that means outside of the fact that there are a ton of bad teams in the NBA right now.
  19. I see this as being no different then the C.C. scenario. Let's say Greinke puts in a full season as he pitched last year. If that happens, and he hits the market, he's 95% gone. The Yankees, Dodgers, etc., etc. will all throw crazy money at him, as he'll be the best FA pitcher on the market. Even if he has a down season, someone will pay him based on his past and his potential. Sad to say, but if the Brewers don't get him locked up by Opening Day (which is very unlikely), probably the best scenario for them keeping him is that he has an injury-marred season.
  20. I've got to say that the less that Braun addresses this in the future, the less inclined that I will be to believe his story. He spent his presser covering everything from Kinko's hours to the herpes rumors while insinuating that more information and/or a lawsuit would be forthcoming.
  21. If the Brewers don't get a deal with Greinke done within a month, I'd say that the odds will shift heavily toward him leaving. The fact that he most likely won't even have an agent by then is not a good sign. How many guys of his stature sign a deal during the season before they hit the market? Maybe he's truly 'different', but I've heard the I love Milwaukee song and dance quite a bit in the past. In the end, money talks and if he pitches as he's capable, teams will be crawling all over themselves to throw obscene money at him.
  22. Illinois is not a prestige job anymore. The most likely scenario is that a mid-major team will make a run to the Sweet 16/Elite 8 or better, and Illinois will hire their coach. Put me on the record for guessing Wichita State's coach, Gregg Marshall.
  23. Bad interview or not, my guess is that Gamel has big-timed some members of the local media in the past, likely resulting in some of the 'snippets' that we've gotten from the media over the past few years. He could very well have some immaturity and/or d-bag in him, but I could care less if he hits.
  24. Just read the Bogut article. It seems that most of it is based on his relationship with Skiles. I'm assuming that barring a 2010-esque March run, Skiles is good as gone.
  25. I considered some of these guys. Braggs, James and Belliard spent a lot of time in the majors, so while their careers were disappointing, it's not like they didn't do anything. True. But I tried to base things on hype/disappointment ratio. In doing so, I wasn't really fair to Tim McIntosh, as he wasn't really hyped too much with Surhoff in the fold. I'm going to go with Darrell Porter at catcher. He did make an all star team, but was largely a disappointment who developed drug/alcohol issues in Milwaukee. From what I've read, he was going to be the next Johnny Bench, an all-world H.S. athlete coming out of high school in Oklahoma. As a matter of fact, around the time of his debut, I've read that the Orioles offered a trade package including Dave McNally (who had several 20 win seasons at that time). The Brewers said no, kept Porter, he developed said personal problems and eventually was given to Kansas City where he finally developed into a good player.
