  1. He reminds me of someone that I still can't put my finger on, but for you old timers, I've been thinking maybe Dwayne Mosley.
  2. One plus to Gonzalez taking maternity leave will be that it could be harder for his option to vest if he tanks or gets injured.
  3. I believe the HOF deciding on the team came into play after Dave Winfield made a 'consultant' agreement with the Padres in which he received a cushy front office type job and he reciprocated by choosing the Padres for his hat.
  4. I think everything favors the coaches and universities. You hit the nail on the head regarding my primary beef here. Basically, this kid is in indentured servitude while Bo could walk tomorrow if some school wanted to triple his salary and give him a sweet 'shoe deal' and endorsements as fringe benefits. Meanwhile, the UW is making money hand over fist regardless. If this kid really wanted to play for (gasp) Iowa State, I don't think that would derail Bo's championship dreams.
  5. If recruits dont like what Bo is doing I am guessing they wont like how Tubby trashes his own players to the press - see Sampson and Hoff from the past two years. Or the fact that Tubby restricted Colton Iverson from transferring to any team Minny played the next year OK, Tubby's replacement will be happy then.... The bottom line is that this is a petty Bush League move. I don't see the reason for barring ACC teams as being the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. I think that Ryan feels a threat from ACC teams recruiting in Wisconsin. North Carolina has been pretty aggressive here as of late, and Bennett is now in Virginia. The bottom line is that if I'm a high school coach counseling one of my players who is pretty torn on where to go to school, I'd remind the kid of this precedent. I'm sure that coaches from other schools will as well. This really makes no sense to me, because I see no benefit and very little detriment to letting this kid go where ever he wants. He's already barred from the Big 10 unless he wants to pay his own way, and I don't see him hurting UW if he goes anywhere else.
  6. Ryan should be able to recruit in state, however, Wisconsin isn't exactly a hotbed of McDonald's All Americans. This is going to hurt out of state recruiting for sure, I'd bet that Tubby Smith is happy that Ryan made this move.
  7. I don't know what more there is to hear, appears to be a clear cut d-bag move. Ryan basically blocked him from transferring to any conference school or any other 'big' school that UW may play. Sounds like sour grapes to me, and this is going to be held against him in recruiting- just another reason for top recruits to avoid a Ryan-coached team. I have a real problem with this sort of thing. If Ryan practiced what he preached, he would still be at UWM (or Platteville).
  8. I believe you are correct on Hairston. If I recall correctly, Hairston was interested in coming back to Milwaukee, but Melvin wouldn't go multiple years, and said something to the effect of "we won't pay $3MM for a bench player this year." This is how I remember it as well. He did the same thing last season with Hinske, who would have came in handy as a bat off the bench. I tend to think that Melvin undervalues these veteran role player types, but he always seems to be in the market for them if the team is competitive in July.
  9. To me, Molitor is kind of like that relative who moved 'out East' several years ago that you don't hear from very much outside of a Christmas card and maybe a trip home every few years. As far as the relationship between he and the Brewers, I believe that Attanasio has reached out to him a few times and he has rebuffed. I don't blame him for this, and I don't know that there is an 'icy' relationship.... I'm not sure that I'd feel any kinship with an organization after I stopped working there 20 years ago either. His life circumstances have changed, and he hasn't really shown the desire to stay for very long with his previous MLB coaching jobs, so he probably doesn't want a full-time gig in baseball at this point. It'd be nice to see him back in a Brewer uniform during Spring Training, but as far as I know he is still on the Twins' payroll. As far as the statue goes, the fact that Molitor hasn't been as 'involved' with the franchise as Yount and Aaron won't help. Personally, I think he falls a bit short. In my view, ironically enough, he was always the 'Robin' to Yount's Batman during the glory days of the early 80's (yes I know, opposite of the poster). When he was on the field, he was arguably the better player, but Yount always seemed more popular- except among the ladies, Molly was kind of the J.J. Hardy of his era in that respect.
  10. This isn't the first time that Valentine's comments about players have come into question. In the late 1990s, he had two clinically depressed players on the same team. He told the press that he thought they should be playing while receiving treatment. He ended up being ordered to cut off contact with one of the players because he was interfering with that player's recovery. That's enough for me to not want to see him managing. Didn't Sal Bando swoop in and pick both of those guys up from the Mets on the cheap?
  11. One of the things I would like to see as far as a different approach by Melvin is to put a higher priority on guys with OBP. A great example is Jamey Carroll. Now there is a guy with a career .356 OBP and instead we hire a SS with better D than Carroll in Alex Gonzalez with a .291 career OBP The Twins overpaid Carroll. He just got his batting average above .200 last night and has one extra base hit this season. Gonzalez is who he is, but I'd take him any day over Carroll. The Brewers are only giving him an extra few hundred thousand or so this season, and didn't have to lock in for next year.
  12. I think that the Brewers should perhaps relax the requirements on the Walk of Fame before over-saturating the stadium area with statues. If you build too many statues, it diminishes the value of the others. As far as Molitor goes, the bottom line is that he didn't finish his career in Milwaukee. It doesn't really matter who's fault that was, but he's probably not going to get a statue based on that fact alone. He's just not the iconic figure in Wisconsin sports that Yount and Aaron are.
  13. Last year was the best pitching staff up and down that the Brewers have had since '92. In '93 the Brewers returned 4/5 of the starting rotation and overhauled the middle guys in the pen quite a bit. They went from first in the A.L. in E.R.A. to tenth. I don't know why, but last year's team along with this past off-season remind me a lot of '92/'93. I hope that we don't see the same results, but if we do, it may be prudent to start dumping guys at the trade deadline.
  14. I tend to give most Brewers fans more credit than that. 9 games in. Agreed that it's too early to judge, but guys have gotten booed out of the stadium on Opening Day (Suppan, Helms, Deer to name a few). Let's say that we are 29 games in, the Brewers are 12-17 and Ramirez is hitting .163. Sounds like the perfect storm to me.
  15. I hope for Ramirez' and the Brewers' sake that he/they get things going pretty soon, otherwise, he is going to really bear the brunt from the fans at Miller Park. As long as the team is winning, he will get a pass, but if the losing streak continues and he's not hitting his weight, look out. I can't see either Izturis or Isakawa being long for this squad either. I don't know why this team needs to handicap themselves by bringing a couple of completely worthless players North each spring. During Izturis AB's (and Aoki), the left fielder was literally 20 feet behind the shortstop. Generally, you only see this positioning during Little League games when the bench is cleared. The bullpen has definitely been exposed as being not as capable as last season, so the starters had better start turning in more quality starts. None of these things are reason to push the panic alarm yet, but most of them could have been easily predicted.
  16. It may be me, but based on games that I've watched (and my fantasy team), it seems like there are a ton of hitters off to terrible starts. Obviously the season is young, but it seems that every other guy in a given lineup is well under .200 (watching the Yankees game now). I haven't noticed this as much in other seasons.
  17. Could have sworn it was a Friday. Must have meshed together a couple of different games.... I'm just glad that it was televised on Channel 18.
  18. I remember it well. It was a rainy Friday night and I had to wrest control of the TV from some 'Dallas' fans.
  19. To me, it's no more overkill than the pink bats, etc. The meaning of the day is great, it's the whole marketing angle that bothers me. I got really tired of hearing about the 'baby blue UCLA Nike's' by about the second inning.
  20. Another soft tosser that they 'haven't seen much'. I'll be shocked if the Brewers score more than two runs today. After watching the game last night, I'm convinced that a team could track down Ben Hendrickson, sign him off the street and he would shut down the Brewers on three hits for eight innings.
  21. I think it depends on what happens for the rest of this season. If they make the playoffs again, I don't see a rebuild making sense even if Greinke departs. If they are 10 games below .500 on July 29, I say start the rebuild. Other thoughts.....I'm still not sold on trading Hart in a scenario where the Brewers are still competitive. He signed a team friendly deal a few years ago so who is to say that he won't do the same again? Also, I don't see a scenario where the Brewers will be moving Ramirez unless they eat a ton of that backloaded deal. As for the pitchers, again I think that it depends on whether they look to compete. As stated above, I think of the three in question, Wolf has the best odds of returning. I also say no to any 4 year deal for Marcum regardless.
  22. It's pretty obvious that this isn't going to go away. I was actually more surprised by the lack of reaction in Chicago (probably due in large part to all the Brewer fans) than I was what he got last night. I'd be willing to bet that ESPN covered this, and fans elsewhere will see it and feed off it.
  23. Great point. For a good chunk of the first part of my lifetime, the Bucks were the best sports thing going in this state. This was back in the days where the Garden State Bowl was huge and an NIT bid was the goal. Super Bowl or World Series? Unthinkable. Wisconsin sports fans are very spoiled these days.
  24. The only way that Marcum would accept arbitration would be either if his arm falls off between now and December and/or he pitches like he did last post season for the rest of this season. I think that people will be surprised what he gets in free agency if he has a year anywhere close to what he did last season. That said, I hope the Brewers don't bite and give him a four year deal. If Wolf stays healthy and fairly effective, my guess is that the odds of him being a Brewer next season are higher than both Greinke and Marcum.
  25. I would be interested to see a study on how well organizations have done developing starting pitching (for themselves) since the amateur draft was instituted in '65(?). No matter what metric is used, I have to imagine that the Brewers would be toward the bottom, if not at the bottom of the list.
