  1. Personally, I think Greinke is a tad better than Cain. Take Cain out of that ballpark and that division, and he doesn't post the same numbers. No matter what, this does not bode well for the Brewers/Greinke situation as Greinke now should be the number one arm on the market next winter.
  2. A few years back, I seem to remember reading that Cincy and Milwaukee were neck and neck for 'smallest media market' in baseball. I still think that it's foolish to give Votto $200 million for his over 30 years when he is two years from free agency though.
  3. Good for them. It's nice to see a small market keep their stars. At the same time, I'm not sure if Votto is worth that kind of contract.
  4. No surprise. Anyone who knows Gantner knows that's just the type fo guy he is. We always hope that the players we root for, ESPECIALLY a player like Gantner who played his whole career with one organization and was part of one of the best trio's of all time....but Gantner is one of the slimiest guy I know. A little off topic, but no kidding? I had a few encounters with Gantner and he was more than pleasant every time. One time in particular, he had a long conversation with me when he didn't have to. Granted this was many years ago, when I was still starstruck by MLB players. I know that he's had some personal issues in the past several years, so maybe he's changed, but he definitely seemed a good guy to me. The guy also had the best penmanship that I've ever seen on an autograph. He must have gotten an A+ in 3rd grade cursive.
  5. Call me a Negative Ned, but April Fools Day jokes are really getting lame and are irritating to me. The older and crankier that I get, the further away that I can see them coming from. BTW: That Golden Corral chocolate thing looks nasty, every time that I see the ad on TV I am grossed out.
  6. I've said this before, but my gut says that it takes nine figures or very close to it to get a deal done. If this is true about a new agent, I'd guess that there is a very short window to get an extension done. Most marquee free agents to be don't do extensions after the season starts.
  7. Didn't know that Ol' Gascan was still in baseball. I'll bet that he'll contribute to the 'we blew xxxxxx games that we led after the 6th inning' lament that the Cards fans will go to again this year.
  8. The Cards are 'optimistic' that Carpy will 'be back in May'.... in Higuera-speak, that means May, 2013. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=MLB&id=2371&line=353060&spln=1
  9. How did he not reciprocate? I didn't read the interview. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/sam_amick/03/28/bogut.warriors/index.html
  10. Comparing that to a guy who both trashed the city of Milwaukee and admitted to deliberately tanking in games to get himself traded.... well... to each their own, I guess. First, I want to say that I never thought that I'd be defending Gary Sheffield on this board. Second, I think the comparison is very valid, except for the fact that Sheffield was far more talented then Bogut. Regarding injuries, the Brewers medical staff misdiagnosed a broken foot back in Sheffield's rookie season, and let him play on it for weeks. Then they gave SS to Spiers. Regarding the tanking games thing, the 'throwing the balls in the stands' was later denied by Sheffield, and it's not backed up by the game logs. I don't remember Sheffield saying anything bad about Milwaukee, and even if he did, Bogut has been taking roundabout potshots at the city since the trade himself. The bottom line is that both players trashed their organizations after they were traded to the West coast, Bogut just did so in a much more diplomatic way. After missing game upon game and taking million upon million from the Bucks franchise, he should have just kept his mouth closed. I'm glad that he's happy with the Warriors. Maybe if he can ever play a full season without an owie, he will come close to justifying his draft pick status, but I doubt that will happen. I'm glad that he's their headache now.
  11. Because his employer respects his right to privacy Too bad that he didn't reciprocate that respect. As I said, good riddance.
  12. Obviously, but why the secrecy? In the case of a family illness, that's all that they would have had to say- this happens all the time with players missing games. Because of this, I'm more inclined to believe the 'personal issues' angle- if that's the case, couldn't he have squared these away during the lockout? At any rate, the organization supported him during whatever it was, and then he has the gall to trash them a few months later? To me, this comes off very similar to the Gary Sheffield stuff. I've partaken in a good deal of Sheffield trashing over the years, but I've softened a bit on him after almost 20 years. I'm almost more willing to give him a pass in this case due to the fact that he was a twenty year old kid from a rougher background, and he wasn't making eight figures. Bottom line, Bogut didn't get the job done here. Yes, injuries ruined things for the most part, but he shouldn't be blaming the Bucks for that. Spouting about the fact that the Bucks didn't provide him with a good enough backup or make excuses for his play? Come on, you were the number one overall pick. He should have kept his thoughts to himself.
  13. I just read part of the recent interview that Bogut did for SI (overview in the article on the JS), and I've got to say that I'm glad they dumped this guy. Perpetually injured, it seems as though he's using them as an excuse for all of his issues. He really lost me this season, when he took off for a week (in between injuries) for an unexplained absence right after the season started. Maybe he should go to work rehabbing his latest injury as opposed to spouting off to the press. Good riddance.
  14. That's how it seems to me. I saw a mock with the Bucks taking Doc Rivers' kid with the 10 pick. Though I think that he should have stayed in school, and he wasn't too impressive his Freshman season, this may be the type of guy that the Bucks should target. Looking at the same mock, I'm not really bowled away with any of the other Top 10 picks except for Davis.
  15. Yeah, this sums it up for me too. I like Green, and at the same time think his potential is vastly overrated by some Brewers fans. But the guy needs to be challenged with MLB pitching, not stuck behind Brooks freaking Conrad. Although he's also stuck behind Aoki in a way, since to get a decent number of PAs, Green would probably have to be the #1 PH option off the bench in addition to spelling Weeks & Ramirez. Right. Green is not some raw 20 year-old phenom who projects to be a starter in the near term. He is blocked by Ramirez and to a lesser extent, Weeks. He's also 25 years old, and I see no point in a remedial course of AAA. I'd rather see what they have in him than a 'guy' like Conrad, the likes of whom could be snatched off waivers at pretty much any time. For all we know, they have the next Kevin Seitzer and have buried him.
  16. I really don't see this draft as being that strong, relatively speaking. I've watched a lot of college basketball games this year, and don't see most of the 'lottery' guys talked about in baited breath as being all that special- at least not more so than other years. That Davis kid from Kentucky looks to be the real deal, but even he appears to be pretty soft.
  17. I'm not as sold on Green as many here are... but at the same time, I think that it's foolish to send him to Nashville where he has nothing left to prove. Unless they are going to play him at shortstop down there (obviously not possible/happening), I fail to see the point.
  18. Jerry Sloan is up there too. Agreed.
  19. Ding! Ding! The Cards are really old all over the field. They will have to be extremely lucky with injuries to stay on top of the division. But the Cardinals weren't on top of the division, that's the rub. The Brewers finished 6 games ahead of them. Obviously that's easy to forget due to the postseason hot/lucky streak. Both teams lost a key player, and I don't see how the Cardinals have picked up 6 games on the Brewers.... even if you believe that they will get the pre-injury Wainwright (I don't).
  20. In my view, Popovich is the best coach of this generation, better than Phil Jackson.
  21. He did not say that. He said that if Frucal and Beltran both play 140 games they should win 95-100 games, and no one else in the division was capable of winning 85. He did not say the Cards would win 85. Here's a link to the interview. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/that-s-a-winner-says-whitey/article_d7061520-7733-11e1-bfc8-001a4bcf6878.html Ha! I needed the laugh today. This Cardinals team reminds me of the 2009/2010 Cubs. I'm not saying that the Brewers are going to be great shakes either, but I'd be disappointed if they finished behind the Cardinals.
  22. I would guess that's the case. At any rate, the whole deal seems like a supreme overpay.
  23. As far as I remember, Grunfield was basically a Karl yes man, then when he left, Karl basically was running the asylum single handed. If I remember right, Karl strongly lobbied for both the Traylor pick and the Mason trade. Both those guys turned out terribly, Mason in particular. Then look at the return for the Big 3. Absolutely horrible. Bottom line, Karl left the franchise in shambles, and was paid handsomely to do so. I think that he was overrated as a coach as well. His in-game decision making often left me shaking my head, and I got tired of him making waves about players through the media. Getting only two playoff wins from that group was an absolute crime.
  24. I wouldn't give up Morgan for LaPorta, nor would I entertain a Green/LaPorta deal anymore. I'd be willing to give an A ball pitcher for him or maybe one of the relievers who is the odd man out, but that's it. If LaPorta isn't good enough to make the Indians (especially considering they have the DH), I'm not giving them any good value for him.
  25. I think we can now officially mark the CC trade as a win.
