  1. With Ramirez and Weeks, I don't see a spot for Green outside of being a utility player. As for LaPorta, I like the fact that he could at least theoretically help cover left during a Braun suspension. The Indians may have a bit of interest in Green as they are projected to have rookies manning 2nd and 3rd as far as I can tell.
  2. I'd look into this. Maybe they are still interested in Green.
  3. I want a veteran bat as much as anybody, but I don't see the need for Lee. All that he can do is pinch hit or steal time from Gamel. I'd rather have Carlos Lee at this point.
  4. I really don't think that Hamilton has been drinking all along. I also think that there have been more than two relapses. It's not as big a crisis if the relapses are with alcohol, but if he starts using drugs again, things could go downhill quickly (Was he ever suspended for substance abuse in the MLB? If so, failing a test for 'recreational drugs is a no-no).
  5. Bando made all kinds of stupid comments during the '92/'93 offseason. This is really when the Brewers started pleading poverty. When he got backlash for the Molitor move, the veiled threats regarding a possible move started.
  6. I just don't see enough offense on that team. Zimmerman is a stud, but I'm not sure that you can count on Morse to replicate 2011.
  7. In my view, there is not anyone in this draft worth tanking for. In past drafts, there were guys obviously (at the time) worth tanking for. I'm talking the years with Oden/Durant, James, Duncan, Iverson, Big Dog, Webber, Shaq, Ewing, etc. This could very well be a deep draft relatively speaking, but I don't see one player who is going to step in as a difference maker within a few years.
  8. What does it being a one year deal have to do with anything? He's signed for 2012, that's what the Nats wanted. I'm sure Jackson would much, much rather find a long-term contract instead. I combined two different points. To be clear, I don't think that Jackson is good enough to vault the Nats into contention, though it may help them get to .500. He throws hard, but he's very hittable. Not a bad 4-ish starter and the Nats were smart to get him on only a one year deal. Maybe they are getting him in the hopes of flipping him at the deadline. My second point is that Jackson is playing his way through baseball. I wonder when the tour will hit Milwaukee.
  9. Jackson isn't going to make much of a difference in that division. A one year deal virtually guarantees that he will be elsewhere next season. The guy goes through teams faster than I go through boxes of Kleenex.
  10. If that's the case rockco, would be better to release Sunday or Saturday. That may be true, but on Monday, every sports talking head in the world will be breaking down the Super Bowl on talk radio, those dumb sportswriter shows on ESPN,etc. Didn't the 'leak' come out a few hours before the Heisman selection?
  11. MLB is probably waiting until the day after the Super Bowl to release the judgement. This way, it will get buried a bit.
  12. The thing about Lawrie is that he padded his value big time last year. Due to his ties with the organization, Zdurincik may have put a premium on Lawrie last winter, but who knows. Would I prefer Pineda to Marcum at this point? Sure, due to the fact that he's locked in for years, but there are legit questions with both due to how they pitched down the stretch last season. Both seemed to hit a wall physically. Both are probably not as good as they were in the first half, but no where near as bad as they were at the end of the season.
  13. I was big time against the Wolf signing, but I'll admit that I was wrong. Outside of his horrible start, he's been very good. If he puts together another year like last year, his deal will probably go down as the best multi-year free agent acquisition in franchise history. The problem with the Brewers giving any non home-grown pitcher big money is that everyone will immediately fear another Suppan. He was so horrible, that it's hard to fault people for being gun shy.
  14. I saw the comparison to Overbay, and that's what I've expected as well. There have been lots of similarities in their career paths (long term prospect status, hit the heck out of the ball in the minors, blocked in the majors, with relatively poor early MLB performance on a small sample, right down to both being 27 years old when given the shot in Milwaukee). The only major difference is that Gamel was Machaed. For 2012, if Gamel can come close to matching the production Overbay had in his first year in Milwaukee, I'll be happy. Frankly, I have less concerns about Gamel than I do in with other spots in the lineup.
  15. He got death threats for stuff that happened in a football game. That's absolutely ludicrous. Agreed. I'm not saying that it's right, but I'm sure that goats have been getting death threats forever. I would guess that 'Twittering' and crying to the press will only serve to instigate the yahoos even more. Williams would have been best served to lie low for awhile. His skin is way too thin to be interacting with fans on the net, especially considering the veil of anonymity gives people added 'courage'.
  16. I think that Ned is a very good manager for that team. His Achilles heel is a complete inability to handle a bullpen. To be honest, I'm starting to draw comparisons between the 2012 Royals and the 1987 Indians. Just way too much hype.
  17. Maybe I'm too old to understand, but I have no idea why any pro athlete would put themselves out there on Twitter without utilizing a PR agency to make the 'Tweets'. It seems if you are randomly typing things in, only bad things can come out of it. This isn't even mentioning the fact that some fans will be sending trash talk the other way. I have no sympathy whatsoever for that baby PR from the 49ers getting his feelings hurt. Instead of crying to the media, perhaps he should have shut down his Twitter account or made it only accessible to family and friends (I'm assuming that you can do that).
  18. I seem to think that there is a little more than luck to the whole 'Cardinals thing' as well. Maybe God was on Albert's side? I think it's bigger than the Cardinals at any rate though, LaRussa/Duncan had a solid track record of turning careers around. Eckersley, Dave Stewart and Bob Welch come to mind immediately from the Oakland days. I really think that people are downplaying the loss of LaRussa and Duncan way too much.
  19. They held LA to 89 points. That didn't have much to do with hitting shots. Luc Richard is pretty much Bruce Bowen at this point. The Lakers aren't very good this year, and are terrible on the road, but this win demonstrates that this team is not going to be in the running for a top pick no matter what happens. I could understand tanking if they were currently in the 4 position or something, but there are a ton of terrible teams. What I don't get is that who is so great in this draft to tank for? It looks like there are (yet again) a bunch of guys who will be projects and/or tweeners in the pros... or the current foreign flavor of the month. I think Harrison Barnes is going to be very good, but even assuming that he comes out, Roy Williams isn't exactly known for producing guys who translate well to the NBA. I can understand the frustration with not having a championship quality team, but let's face it, probably 80% of the NBA markets are in the same boat, with no realistic chance at a championship.
  20. Just got back from the game. Yuni.... I mean Gooden- had a heck of a game.
  21. Even without Bogut, this team will win enough games to fall out of the top five in ping pong balls. Heck they could probably go 0-for the rest of the season and not get the #1 spot. There are some truly terrible teams this season. Losing Bogut probably knocks them out of the playoffs and down to the 7-10 range. Tough to get excited about that.
  22. I see that Austin Kearns was snapped up on the cheap for a NRI yesterday. This is the sort of guy that they should be tossing a NRI to. Someone who could play first as well as the OF would be a bonus.
  23. Good God. Bogut broke his ankle last night, out 'indefinitely'.
  24. Unless they flash some cash, it will be tough for the Brewers to get any starter to come to camp as a NRI, with seemingly all 5 spots locked in. I'd expect a reliever or two and hopefully (for the 50th time) a veteran power bat. I don't want Kottaras to be the only guy with some semblance of power on the bench once again.
  25. I see 18 all-stars out of 45 and several superstars. How do you win in the NBA? With one superstar and a solid supporting cast or with multiple all-stars. I may have missed someone, but outside of Tyson Chandler last year do any of these guys have a ring? To me, on that list of top three guys Rose, Durant and James are probably the only true superstars capable of leading a team to a championship as the top player. Guys like Griffin, Anthony and Howard are probably best suited as second bananas. Then you have lots of OK players and busts in the top 3. To me, the key for the Bucks run was not only drafting Big Dog and Ray. I loved those guys, but had they not drafted Vin Baker and then turned him into Sam Cassell and Tim Thomas (by dumping the losers Brandon and Hill), they probably wouldn't have went past the first round. Baker was a mid lottery pick. I remember that a lot of people were mad that the Bucks traded Marbury for Allen. Had they not done that, things would have even been worse. This is not even mentioning the fact that the Bucks were fortuitous that '94 and '96 were probably two of the best drafts in the last 20 some years. If they were off by just a year (#1 in '95, #5 in '97), they would have been stuck with steaming garbage.
