  1. Right. I'm sure Madson/Boras didn't enter into contract talks with any other teams beside the Phillies and now the Reds. I couldn't imagine them turning anyone off with 'unrealistic expectations'. I'm eagerly awaiting the day where Carlos Pena becomes 2012's Jody Reed. Madson's deal is going to look like a big score compared to what Carlos is going to get.
  2. Steroids do not make you better at baseball, just weightlifting! Have you read Juiced? Canseco's word is pretty much gospel to me when it comes to steroids, as he was the father of the 'Steroid Era'. As for McGwire's '87 season, I'll give him credit where credit is due. However, in '87 there was undoubtedly a 'juiced ball'. Nearly everyone who played in that era enjoyed a spike in HR in '87, some guys with significant outliers (Wade Boggs comes to mind immediately).
  3. Regardless of Prince's situation, in hindsight offering K-Rod arby was a huge mistake. Given the opportunity to roll back time, there is no way Melvin would do it again. You cannot positively spin an eight figure contract for a set up man. The Brewers need to realize that the arby/draft pick compensation system is severely flawed, and they need to quit playing games with it. Melvin narrowly dodged a bullet with Sheets a few years ago, and apparently didn't learn his lesson to only offer arby to guys that he wants to keep and pay. Draft picks in MLB are a crapshoot anyway. This isn't the NFL where you can get a couple guys in the first round and they are immediate contributors. As for Ramirez, I actually think he signed a fair deal considering. Others will consider him Prince's replacement, and if he gets off to his patented slow start and/or gets hurt, things could go South fast.
  4. So how do you feel about Sandy Koufax? That's a strong argument. The thing with Koufax is that he put together perhaps the most dominant pitching stretch ever, then retired immediately. I think guys were voting based on his dominance and the assumption that would have continued had he not developed the arthritis. Bagwell was pretty much at the end of the line regardless. Kirby Puckett would be another argument, but I'm guessing that he wouldn't have gotten in had we know what we know now about him. I think that both Koufax and especially Puckett got in largely due to a sympathy factor in their abrupt retirements that was still fresh when they were voted in. Their postseason exploits played a role as well. I could be mistaken, but I don't remember Bags doing much of anything in the playoffs.
  5. Yep, and through zero fault of Melvin or the Brewers. This is the bed Prince has made, & if there's backlash against the organization due to the outcome, it'll be incredibly annoying. I don't know. I'm not taking sides here, but you can at least make the argument that offering K-Rod arby and signing Ramirez so quickly were mistakes. There is no way that K-Rod would demand what he will be getting in arby on the open market. It would only be a tad surprising to me if Ramirez was still on the market had the Brewers not signed him. Again, this is probably a moot point, since the odds of Prince's 'pride' allowing him to grovel back to the Brewers are slim to none.
  6. The Bucks certainly seem to have S.A.'s number at the Bradley Center.
  7. Prince is not going to take a one year deal. In the unlikely event that he and Boras come crawling back to the Brewers, I'd hope that Attanasio would at least try to creatively make something work. Perhaps a heavily backloaded 5 year deal with a player out after the 3rd year would allow them to save face. I just can't see Prince stooping to this, but if he's not signed in another few weeks, you never know.
  8. I don't know if I would put Bagwell with the all-time greats. He had a great career, but didn't hit any real milestones. To me, he's closer (but still a notch below) to an Dick Allen with a better personality than an sure hall of famer. If Allen is not in, Bagwell should not be either. The rub for me with Bagwell is that fairly or unfairly, I consider him a product of his time. He put up some huge numbers (very impressive when he was in the Astrodome), but lots of guys were putting up video game numbers in the 90's. I am also very suspicious of his association with Ken Caminiti. Bottom line, steroids or not, I don't think that he played long enough to put up the counting stats necessary for the HOF.
  9. It looks like he got even less than the initial reports. ~$1 million more than Joe Nathan. My guess is that he could have gotten a lot more, but he and Boras were way too greedy when talking with teams back in November/December. Prince and the boys have got to be squirming right now.
  10. No way to put a positive spin on this one for Scotty.
  11. McGwire, Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, Palmeiro, all those guys should be in I disagree. Bonds would have been in regardless, but his ego got in the way and he had to cheat. Clemens was right on the cusp, but he was starting to wane quite a bit until his 'career resurgence' in Toronto. McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro are all no's...look at their numbers in the years before they started juicing, with McGwire and Palmeiro you can trace their juicing to playing with Canseco, I'd guess Sosa got started in the 97/98 offseason.
  12. Absolutely an awesome idea. It would be fun to debate the merits of these guys during the slow period of the off-season.
  13. I don't know about you guys and gals, but I'd ride that gravy train to the ground. If Bud keeps pulling that kind of salary, maybe Wendy and Laurel will have enough to buy the Brewers back with their inheritance.
  14. Greed is a terrible thing. I wonder if Boras is banking on the new ownership group of the Dodgers? That one would make a ton of sense, but wouldn't we will be well into the season before that became official?
  15. Right, but the modern advances in surgery are theoretically available to all players. Those who made the conscious decision to cheat had an unfair advantage over those who did not.
  16. Brettac1, your own avatar is of Curt Hennig (who I thought was an AWESOME wrestler). But he's dead, and his own father Larry The Axe Hennig thinks steroids and painkillers contributed to Curt's death. That's who that is! Loved Hennig going back to his tag team with Big Scott Hall. Speaking of a well-deserved HOF nod....
  17. Considering the fact that he received 4 fewer votes than Ted Simmons, I'd say no. Don't get me wrong, I loved Simba, but his Milwaukee resume pales to Crandall's. Frankly, all of the guys who came over in the Cardinals trade are a tad overrated in Brewers lore. I'm not discounting their contributions, but they were all pretty short term.
  18. I think that Trammell was just as good if not better than Larkin. His prime was during an era in which offense was limited relative to Larkin's prime in the 90's. I wouldn't put much stock in the MVP thing either. Trammell was screwed out of the MVP in '87, while I remember scratching my head a bit when Larkin got his. Trammell was also considered one of the best defensive SS of his era. I'm not discounting Larkin at all, but I do think that it's odd that he gets in so quickly while Trammell is still out there with only a few years left on the ballot.
  19. I'm not going to argue this one, but how does Larkin get 86 percent and Trammell gets largely ignored at 37 percent? On that note, why is Lou Whitaker off the ballot while Roberto Alomar is enshrined? Have we forgotten the 80's that quickly? At least someone is getting in though... unlike the uber-exclusive Miller Park Walk of Fame.
  20. Aoki says politely go pound sand Milwaukee How will the translator handle that?
  21. Jennings has skills. If he could only develop a midrange jumper that's a poor imitation of Cassell or be able to finish at the hoop consistently he'd be deadly. Unfortunately, he is far too content to jack up threes for my taste. I agree that this team needs scorers/shooter(s) to surround him with. He should be a distributor first, a shooter second.
  22. It seems that Scott has a big mouth, but I'd still sign him in a heartbeat to plug in for Braun. That's not going to happen because he is drawing tons of interest on the market. I'm half expecting Melvin to pull out some old/retired guy a la Kapler and Edmonds to fill that role. Any good candidates?
  23. I expected the road trip to be bad, but not that bad. The whole Bogut thing was horrible timing, but I'm not sure that it would have made a difference. Only a few games in, but it's clear that an offense centered around Jennings and Jackson (who seems to have aged about 10 years in the past offseason) is the road to ruin.
  24. If that's the case, and I'm the Brewers, I'd strongly consider paying the posting fee and offering him a non-guaranteed contract with a NRI. It'd be a huge risk for Aoki though and a minor risk for the Brewers. I'm not sure that I would commit more than the posting fee without getting the chance to watch him over spring training though. If the Brewers pay the posting fee and then release him, can he go back to Japan as a free agent?
  25. This doesn't seem like a good match for either side. Frankly, I'm not sold on anyone based on stats in another league. It doesn't appear that MLB execs are either. I'm sure the Brewers don't want to throw $6-8 million minimum at some guy based on his Japanese statline and a brief workout. As for Aoki, it seems doubtful that he will make more money over here than he makes over there, so unless he really wants to play in MLB, it doesn't make sense for him either. I don't feel bad for him though. If he was that good, the Brewers would have never even been in the conversation.
