  1. I tire of the whole second guessing with Paul and/or Williams. First of all, they were never in the discussion. It was going to be Bogut/Williams or Williams/Bogut. It's smacks of the whole 'We should have drafted Will Clark over Surhoff' (1989-1993) later replaced with 'We should have taken Barry Bonds over Surhoff (1994-). Secondly, neither of them would be currently playing in Milwaukee now anyway, as both whined until they were traded. Frankly, I think that both are somewhat overrated anyway. Look at the Top 3 picks over the past several years, they are about a 50/50 proposition. For every Durant, there is a Marvin Williams. For every Dwight Howard, there is a Kwame Brown. Tanking does not insure success, especially with the way that drafts have been watered down the past 20 years or so, not to mention that there are several horrible teams in the league right now. The Bucks could tank and end up with the #7 lottery pick, then get jumped by two teams that get lucky. I'd rather make the playoffs than get a pick in the 7 to 10 range.
  2. Few thoughts on this whole deal... Glad that Prince is going to the A.L. and the Tigers. Detroit is one of the few teams that I don't mind. Have to give props to Boras for surprising me with what he got. Way above what I would have expected. At the same time, I wonder if their timing was fortuitous in that Martinez injury started a dialogue between the two parties or if the Tigers were involved all along. I'd guess the former. I'm relieved that the deal was way out of the Brewer stratosphere, so I won't have to expend effort second guessing things for the next several years. Mike Ilitch looks absolutely ridiculous with whatever that thing is on his head.
  3. It's slang, but how about "I'm snakebit". You could also use the phrase as follows: 'How could a team not win a World Series in 105 years. They should have lucked into at least one. The Cubs are truly snakebit.'
  4. I can think of one reason for this: $
  5. I could have sworn that I had a few Sprechers once at the bar on the lower level near 3rd base.
  6. I'm not sold on this team being as good or better than last year. Not even mentioning the fact that you are losing Prince and Braun for a third of the season, I'm not sure that the pitching staff can be any better than they were. I am fully expecting Marcum and Wolf to regress, and wouldn't be surprised to see Narveson do the same. As for Gallardo and Greinke, I'm not sure how they can get much better. I keep reading about the '2009 Greinke', but the fact is he was very good last year and a victim of some bad luck...he had a very good WHIP, and struck out 4 times as many as he walked. An injury to one of these two will likely sink the team. The same goes with the bullpen. Outside of Loe's awful May and June, I can't ever recall a better Brewers pen. All those guys were lights out. This year, some of them are gone, and it's highly unlikely that the guys are back will all pitch as well. Bottom line, I see this team somewhere in the mid-80 win range as it stands right now. They have gotten quite a bit older this off-season, so I would not be shocked to see even more of a decline with a key injury or two.
  7. Until Braun is found innocent of the charges, I'm just going to assume that any of these 'leaks' are spin. If the two other players thing is true, to me that puts up even more red flags.
  8. @MLBinsidenews is reporting that Fielder signed an 8 year deal with Washington. Opt out after 3 years. Is this Scott's Twitter account or something? It's really too bad that Prince had to get greedy. Now he's going to be forced to accept the most money and play in an undesirable place. I'd rather have Prince Fielder than the pick. Is there an impact bat that will be available at 16? I'd say the odds of the comp pick being an impact player are less than 20%. Hopefully the Brewers don't waste it on another high school pitcher.
  9. Northwestern will never make the tournament. It's written in the stars.
  10. It's like a Shakespeare tragedy or something. I'm not saying that he was a saint, but it's very sad that he took more heat for one bad decision than the pervert pedophile did for a pattern of years of abuse. Did I ever mention that I hate ESPN?
  11. I love the Texas owner's quote on the Hamilton/Fielder situation. "And frankly, my personal preference at this moment would be to re-sign him (Hamilton) instead of helping Fielder" Think that these guys are getting a hard sell from Boras? I just read that Washington extended Morse as well, not huge money, but a lot of people seem to be forgetting that they are trying to extend Ryan Zimmerman also. That's going to be huge money, so I'm not sure it's automatic ton of cash kicking around for Prince. It's starting to look more and more like Prince and Boras are all in on a pair of twos.
  12. Roco I really like your posts but Calling Narron Hamilton's babysitter is a unwarranted and distasteful comment. Hamilton has had serious issues in his past and one time recently they popped back up. He has no real routine in his life, some many recovering addicts say helps immensely, so he is smart enough to have someone near him to help him make good decisions. And you belittle that? Seems out of line.Sorry, I can see how the comment was snide. His handler/mentor/sponsor then.
  13. This may not be as far fetched as it seems, considering the fact that his babysitter in Texas is now employed by the Brewers.
  14. So much for vet leadership.
  15. Oswalt makes no sense for the Brewers whatsoever. He will be compensated handsomely by someone and due to his age/injury history is a risk. I fully expect him to sign with the Cardinals. It makes more sense for them, and just seems like a natural move for them.
  16. Sad to hear. Carter has been one of the good guys, heavily involved in charitable causes throughout and after his career.
  17. Credit given where credit is due. They have rebounded nicely since the Michigan debacle. Now the schedule gets very tough for the next month.
  18. I would never trust the stated age of anyone born in the D.R. that's for sure, especially when doling out a multi-year/multi-million dollar deal.
  19. I can certainly live with these numbers. Much lower than I expected.
  20. I agree that a power bat should be added, someone that can play left when Braun is suspended.
  21. What do you base on Betancourt only lacking range when going to his right? He also had below average range going up the middle, just to a slightly lesser degree than going to his right. A valid point, but Yuni was quite often positioned to shade towards second. Obviously, this was done to cover for his lack of range. At the same time, if he got to a ball, it was generally an out. As long as Gonzalez makes all the routine plays, I will be good. If he starts kicking routine grounders or throwing double play balls in to right field, I'll have a problem. My primary issue is that it seems everyone is ready to accept Gonzalez as a no hit good glove guy. Considering the contract the Brewers gave him, they would have been better served to sign Barmes in such a role, as far as I remember, he has a much better defensive reputation, and I've seen him on the highlight reels quite a bit. Younger too. I was fine with the Brewers passing on him at the time, because I thought he got a tad overpaid. When the details of the Gonzalez contract came out, I changed my opinion.
  22. Maybe I've watched too much Jose Valentin and Jose K in my day, but I really don't think Betancourt was that bad. He nearly always made the routine play (did he make a throwing error all season?), with a strong arm and was solid turning two. The only legitimate knock on Yuni at SS is a lack of range to his right, and for reasons I've argued elsewhere, I think that is getting overblown. As for Gonzalez, time will tell. I don't always trust scouting reports- generally guys north of 35 start to slip a little defensively anywhere... especially shortstop, how many elite defensive shortstops have we seen at his age? Not too many. Even making the assumption that these scouts are dead on, who is to say that these reports on Gonzalez will be accurate as he ages?
  23. I have been a fan of his in the past, but a quick look at his stats would suggest that he's near the end of the line- it appears that he had a major injury a few years back, and hasn't been the same since. On that same token, I'm sure that he wouldn't be a favorite of many here because he doesn't like to take the walk. I wouldn't have a problem throwing him an NRI though.
  24. Wow, this is a nice surprise. I have to rescind my prior criticisms of Melvin for offering arby. On it's face, this appears to be a very team friendly deal.....perhaps there is some hidden clause kicking in an obscene bonus if K-Rod were to finish 21 games.
  25. He doesn't have to be to be a defensive upgrade. No, but considering that he's a poor hitter and making over $4 million, he had better be good at shortstop. The Brewers would have been better served to go the extra million and sign Barmes.
