  1. And I didn't catch a distance on Branyan's second homer, but JP just mentioned correctly that he has 10 homers in 104 at-bats. That's incredible. ~Bill
  2. Granted, I'm not sure we will see the payroll increased beyond $35 million, but those are two guys I'd love to see targeted. The problem with Glaus is that I want to see Branyan here next year batting 5th or 6th all season. I'm with you there. I'd like to see the Brewers take a long look at Damian Miller behind the plate... he's getting old, but he could give us two years as a solid hitter and good defender, particularly important given that our pitching staff is going to be pretty young hopefully. Beyond that, I would just as soon have DM and the gang focus on pitching. Radke is an interesting name... someone of that ilk that is established, healthy (hopefully Brad can now be considered that), and can keep the ball on the ground would be perfect. That rotation looks mighty solid, and with guys like Santos and Wise and De La Rosa in the bullpen or at Triple-A in case of injury or ineffectiveness, we would have some much-needed depth. Robert has been pointing out lately that you really need six or even seven starters to get through a season, and I'm not sure we have that right now. Above everything, though, I really hope they aggressively pursue a long-term deal with Sheets. If he isn't down with resigning, then I guess we'll just have to live with that decision. But if we have money to spend, he's the guy that deserves it. You just can't replace a young workhorse ace. ~Bill
  3. The Muscle says back up off me 'cause I'm on fire. Boom. ~Bill
  4. Interesting, DHonks, but I bet that the the increased number of outs that Hall makes compared with Clark just means less at-bats for Overbay, Jenkins, Branyan, et. al. Clark is on-baseing at a .377 clip while Hall is still below .300 at .288, so in a week's time (we'll say 5 plate appearances a game times six games) Clark will likely make 18 or 19 outs while Hall will make 21 or 22. It's not a big difference, which is why lineups don't have that big of an impact on run scoring, but that's still maybe 3 less opportunities for Overbay or Jenkins. That adds up quick. It would be nice if someone would ask Yost why he has been constructing the lineup this way. Unless we hear it from him, it's all just speculation as to his motives. I don't like it, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif ~Bill
  5. Uecker: We say 450. Reds, to save embarrassment for Aaron Harang, call it 402. JP: Plus the Reds used to own Branyan, so they're trying to minimize the magnitude of their mistake. LOL. Nothing makes me happier than listening to a Russell Branyan blast... 'cept *seeing* a Russell Branyan blast, I guess. Two runs for Sheets. The Brewers are really feeling generous today. ~Bill
  6. Got the Cards-Rams on, and go Crew! No Cards-Rams in 'sconsin, so I'm flipping back and forth between the Steelers/Raiders and Lions/Evil-Doers. I like the lineup today. While I don't mind Hall hitting second, I would prefer Clark or Ginter there. Putting Ginter in the 2nd spot might somehow get him to stop swinging for the fences. That probably won't happen, but he did thrive as a #2 and even #1 batter in the minors. I agree with Ned that Brady Clark would be a great #2 hitter: "Brady's a guy who is patient enough to let Po steal. You can hit-and-run with him, he can hit behind the runner. He makes some decent contact. He does a little bit of everything." -- Ned Yost, 07/31/04 I don't know what's changed since then, but it's pretty weird. Brady is right-handed, he doesn't have any power, he sees a lot of pitches, and he doesn't strikeout a lot. Given the other players available to Yost, I can't fathom why he doesn't love pencilling Brady in as his #2 hitter. Is anybody watching this one on MLB.tv? Do they have the barebones broadcast available again? I can't remember the last time neither team televised back-to-back games... I think it was during the Puerto Rico Expos series. Boo. ~Bill
  7. 09/12/2004 - Brewers (Sheets) at Reds (Harang) If only 3,000 people tuned in last night, how many will be listening today? 1,500? 500? Buck the majority. Listen to Bob and Jim. 8. EDIT: Not sure what happened there... Anyway, Reds win 9-0. Fun. ~Bill
  9. Well, it turns out Krynzel has a problem with his hamstring and so he can't play. How nice. Magruder is now in for Jenkins, so that's good. ~Bill
  10. Considering we're losing 8-0, wouldn't this be a fine time to give David Krynzel and Chris Magruder a few innings in the outfield and a couple of at-bats? Do Podsednik, Jenkins, and Clark have to play the whole game? Boo. ~Bill
  11. Thanks, Monty. I think you're right... should be "dominant." Time for a new signature anyway. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Thanks for pointing that out, tyguy. ~Bill
  12. Well that was nice... Adam Dunn is good. Not sure what you mean, tyguy... enlighten me? ~Bill
  13. Hmm. Couple things: 1> No Krynzel. Yost had indicated he would start either last night or tonight, or at least that's how Bill and Daron characterized it, so it is unfortunate that this isn't happening. Like I said last night, I don't understand why so much importance is being placed on not finishing last. Sure, that would be nice... but I don't think it should trump other goals (like getting playing time for players who the organization needs to evaluate for next year). 2> Hall second. Why? It really doesn't make any sense at all, and while it isn't that important in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't speak well to the competency of the field manager. 3> No Magruder. He's gotten only one start this month, a lot less than the two or three times a week Yost had slotted him for. Why? EDIT: Interesting, MB. I saw that the game wasn't being televised and was wondering how MLB.tv was going to broadcast it. Sounds cool... I might buy a day pass and watch it tomorrow - depends on how this one turns out, I guess. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  14. This was actually one of his better outings, as he struck-out seven in three innings, but he still allowed four hits, a walk, and three runs. He is what he is at this point, and I don't see the motivation for Yost to find ways to get him innings at the expense of Hendrickson and De La Rosa. It just doesn't make sense to me. This "we're not going to finish last" stuff is just lame. Who cares if we finish in fifth place or sixth place? While we're doing our merry best to battle out the schedule, the Reds are taking the opportunity to evaluate some young pitchers and position players like Brandon Claussen and Anderson Machado. But not us. 'Cause you know, fifth place or even fourth place is sooo important. You've gotta show improvement, even if it means using guys who won't be here next year or won't play a big role to beat teams that are playing youngsters. I'm proud. Boo. ~Bill
  15. Nobody out, need baserunners, Krynzel pinch-hits, looks at two balls, then swings at ball three and dribbles a grounder -- has Dave got one out of the infield in his 14 AB's? No. The hit was a hard grounder that bounced off the first-baseman and he beat it out. Some game thoughts: 1> Why was Ben Hendrickson removed so early? He couldn't find his curveball, but what purpose exactly did bringing Wes Obermueller in serve? I guarantee if the circumstances were reversed and Obie was the starter Ned wouldn't have taken him out. I don't get it... why is Obie so much cooler than Lil' Ben in the eyes of our manager? 2> Adam Dunn annihilated Mark Johnson. Annihilated him. Welcome to the big leagues, I guess. 3> For those that missed it, this fan "caught" Jenkins' home run off his nose. Ouch. He is apparently fine, which makes me think his nose is made out of titanium. 4> The Reds' current outfield (Dunn, Pena, Kearns) has to be one of the biggest in baseball history. Those are three gigantic dudes playing in the same outfield... and they're pretty good, too. 5> Wes Obermueller did not pitch very well. Is anyone really surprised? ~Bill

  21. Assuming "Roque Mercedes" is the guy we've acquired and the "extra" last name is just that, extra, then he's a Dominican pitcher. Here's what I could find: From LINK, Mercedes pitched in this year's Perfect Game National Showcase and was impressive. Nearly every year the PG National showcases some high level talent from Latin America. 6 Venezuelan players and 12 Dominican players have signed with MLB clubs in just the past two years. This year?s National features two very highly regarded pitchers from the Dominican Republic. Scouts are going to love these two. Edgar Garcia and Roque Mercedes are two of the very best arms to come out of the Dominican in recent years. He went to Cenapec school in La Romana, Dominican Republic. From LINK, he had the highest peak Striker reading in the Perfect Game Showcase, hitting 94 (along with Justin Upton). From LINK, a little more about him: Mercedes has a plus, plus body at 6-4, 190 lbs and reached 94 mph with his fastball. Mercedes? control was a bit erratic but when he threw his 79-82 mph curveball near the plate, it was unhittable. From LINK, a list of the top 100 high school players for the '05 draft on a Mariners' discussion board, Mercedes ranks at number 80. Sounds impressive to me. ~Bill
  22. Yep. This was the last scheduled game between the two teams and they do not have a shared off-day. So both teams will only play 161 games this season (or less, if any other games are cancelled). ~Bill
  23. Yes, and tonight's game won't be rescheduled. ~Bill
  24. Craig Wilson actually has 26, Toby, but he sucks against Sheets and so he's not playing. ~Bill
  25. No problem, brettac... nice to see someone else still interested. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif So do we know if the game is going to be on ESPN or not? My cable listing has the Expos at Cubs on ESPN2 at 3PM CDT and Pitt/South Florida college football on ESPN. Adam McCalvy's game preview has ESPN2 listed as the TV feed so is that going to happen? Buehler? ~Bill
