  1. Joyful Sounds, MassBrew. Thanks for the (glorious) info! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif ~Bill
  2. Home runs even feel nice when you're in the midst of a monumental losing streak. Nice job, O. Helms with a popup down the line that goes for a double. Better to be lucky than good, as Daron Sutton says every single broadcast, multiple times. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  3. The following Brewers now have sub-700 OPSes. Billy Hall - .257/.284/.406 = 690 OPS Scott Podsednik - .243/.314/.375 = 688 OPS Craig Counsell - .249/.342/.326 = 668 OPS Wes Helms - .263/.329/.332 = 661 OPS Chad Moeller - .215/.268/.315 = 583 OPS Gary Bennett - .208/.269/.298 = 567 OPS Wow. ~Bill
  4. Wes makes his triumphant return. 5. Looks like the audience for this one wasn't too large. For those that missed it, Pedro The Lion looked excellently fantastic, a lot better than advertised. He has a darting sinker that he throws ~88-92mph, a slider that breaks very sharply down in the zone (about 80mph on the only one I saw the radar reading), and a wicked changeup that was also in the low 80s and which moved in to right-handed hitters quite a bit. His delivery is somewhat reminiscent of Pedro Martinez or Ramon Ortiz, who is his cousin (didn't know that until tonight). If he threw like he did tonight in Triple-A, I don't know why he didn't have more success. I would guess his control is on-and-off, as he did have some issues hitting the glove, but his stuff is a lot better than I thought it was. Color me very impressed. ~Bill
  6. That was quite the pathetic inning. I feel bad for Victor, 'cause he was really pitching well, but you just *can't* walk Padilla in any situation, much less that one. I agree with LV, too... perfect time to get Pedro The Lion a few innings. ~Bill
  7. Bill and Daron just went on and on about how Citizen's Bank is such a hitter's park. It seems like everyone agrees, but the numbers indicate a much more neutral environment. According to ESPN.com's Park Factor stats, it ranks 9th in runs (just ahead of SBC and Miller Park and just behind the Metrodome), 4th in homers (ahead of Skydome and behind Wrigley), and 14th in hits (behind PNC and ahead of Shea). If you convert the rankings to the standardized format where 1000 is neutral, those ranks are 1050, 1231, and 990. So basically, the park gives up home runs at about the same rate it takes away hits, and is therefore a relatively neutral hitting environment. The sample size is still small, and the numbers will be much more reliable after two or three seasons, but CBP isn't in the same class as Coors and Arlington. It's kind of weird that it's gotten that reputation already. ~Bill
  8. More weirdness from Nedley, straight up. MILWAUKEE PHILADELPHIA AVG HR RBI AVG HR RBI Scott Podsednik CF .245 11 31 Jimmy Rollins SS .281 8 49 Craig Counsell SS .251 2 20 Jason Michaels LF .235 4 16 Lyle Overbay 1B .316 13 75 Bobby Abreu RF .290 27 91 Ben Grieve RF .257 7 29 Jim Thome 1B .288 38 88 Geoff Jenkins LF .247 19 66 David Bell 3B .287 13 59 Russell Branyan 3B .234 6 15 Placido Polanco 2B .273 11 31 Trent Durrington 2B .262 2 3 Mike Lieberthal C .254 12 42 Gary Bennett C .211 2 17 Marlon Byrd CF .229 4 27 Victor Santos RHP .067 0 0 Vicente Padilla RHP .130 0 1 (10-8, 4.11) (4-6, 4.23) ~Bill
  9. Game on again at 10:33 CDT. Burba is on the mound, Durrington is playing third, and Branyan moves over to first. Hopefully Overbay isn't hurt... he nearly fell coming out of the batter's box before the rain delay. ~Bill
  10. Yeah for rain delays. Too bad they couldn't have done this before Matt Wise had to pitch in a downpour and Lyle Overbay had to almost break his ankle in the batter's box mud. Hopefully, this is low point in the season. ~Bill
  11. So apparently Glendon Rusch was available... weird. ~Bill
  12. It is interesting to see Matt Clement still pitching, but I would guess it's because their long-man (Glendon Rusch) is unavailable after making a spot start for Kerry "Umpires Bad, Suspensions Good, Temper Not Controlled" Wood. Still, you'd think they'd have someone who could reliably pitch two or three innings without giving up more than two or three runs so that Clement would get a bit of a break. ~Bill
  13. Phelps doesn't throw real hard, but he's got some nice breaking pitches. I don't know if he throws a curveball and a slider or if it is just variations of the same pitch, but he can either make it break real sharply or loop it slower and let it drop. Nice job getting out of that inning despite the poor defense. ~Bill
  14. Bill Schroeder is an idiot. Should Aramis Ramirez, who has a bad groin injury, run as hard as he can on routine popups to the infield? Is that "hustle" worth losing him for an extended period because of a reaggravation to the injury? Have you not noticed lately, Mr. Schroeder, that Ramirez has been running very gingerly the last several series? That just irritates me. Yeah, if you're healthy it would be nice if you ran out a popup. But really, who cares? They fall about once every month or two, and if there's a concern about injury, then why take the risk? ~Bill
  15. ESPN has Travis Phelps listed at 6-foot-2. How tall do you think he really is? Five-ten? Jeez. ~Bill
  16. Dear Ben Hendrickson, We miss you. We love you. We want you to pitch for us. We don't care if you pitch like Wes Obermueller, at least not at the beginning. We just want you pitching in the big leagues, where you belong. Sincerely, Brewer Fans
  17. Moeller hit the year before, too. He batted .385/.467 in 37 games with the D-backs and .401/.517 in 60 games with Triple-A Tucson. In fact, his lifetime Triple-A line in 185 games is .354/.469, not great considering much of that was in the pitcher-friendly Tucson park, but he hit pretty well throughout his minor league career. He never looked like a future slugger, but I'm very surprised he's been this bad. ~Bill
  18. Ok, now here's a situation where Ben Hendrickson could get about five or six innings of work in a relatively pressure-free game. We're going to lose, so it doesn't matter if he gives up another seven runs. Instead, these innings are going to Wes "He just needs to go down to Triple-A for a while and work on some things" Obermueller, who for whatever reason is not at Triple-A. Instead, Hendrickson is racking up more meaningless innings dominating the International League. I don't get it. ~Bill
  19. This doesn't include tonight's start (or last night's start, I don't believe) and is care of ESPN.com. Post-All Star Break Starter GS ERA -------------------------- Wes Obermueller 3 3.46 Victor Santos 8 4.17 Doug Davis 8 4.20 Ben Sheets 7 4.53 Chris Capuano 6 5.40 -------------------------- Not good. ~Bill
  20. Capuano was our best starter for the early parts of the second half, but yeah Davis is probably pitching the best lately. Santos pitched a nice game last time out after struggling quite a bit, so maybe he would get the nod. Who knows? They're all having their issues right now. ~Bill
  21. Oh don't get me wrong Bill, I really do like Russ! I just had to point out that was an UGLY strike out, eh? Oh yeah, I know... and you're totally right. Like I said, I think he just didn't see the ball and so he decided to swing where he thought it might end up. I would think someone would rather just not swing in that situation, but not the Muscle. He doesn't get cheated http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . ~Bill
  22. Dang, Russel missed strike 3 by about a foot and a half. Careful, you spelled Russell wrong... hopefully rluzinski isn't reading this. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Here's a tip, I know I'm not a pro batting coach, but don't close your eyes when you're swinging! LOL... that was an unusual strikeout for him, though, as he is pretty good about swinging at strikes and taking balls. That time, he must not have seen the ball out of Clement's hand or something, 'cause he really did miss by about a foot or more. Most of the time his strikeouts come on good pitches that he just misses, which is sort of like Adam Dunn's preferred method of fanning. I love Three True Outcomes guys... I don't know what it is, but there's something beautiful about watching a guy like Dunn or Branyan hit. In other news, it's not good when you're down 3-0 in the second and have little hope of winning. It's Wrigley, and I've still got faith, but it's probably misguided faith. Oh well. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif ~Bill
  23. He's not going to play in the US this calendar year, though, is he, eh? It's aboot time we signed another Canuck, though, eh. ~Bill
  24. The only reason I really like Chad Moeller is because I think he's an upgrade defensively to Bennett. That, and he'll be here next year. I'm with you, but it's pathetic how poorly these two fellas have hit this season. And neither of them is a defensive genius, either, certainly not in the same category as other bad-hitting catchers like Henry Blanco or Brad Ausmus. I don't care which way they go next season, but I hope they either get a masher or a defensive whiz behind the plate. If we can't afford a complete catcher, at least get someone who excels at one side of the game. I still think Mark Johnson would be better than Bennett or Moeller, especially if used in a platoon situation where he could just hit righties. And BTW, Mark Johnson (Mark L. Johnson, our Triple-A catcher) went to the same high school (Warner Robins, GA) as Russell Branyan. I'm 99% sure they were in the same class and played for the same high school team, as both were drafted in 1994 directly out of high school. Interesting, no? ~Bill
  25. Oh, and in the "You Know You Really Suck When..." category, Chad Moeller must be looking over his shoulder 'cause Gary The Glove is catching him fast. Chad Moeller: .267 on-base plus .316 slugging = 584 OPS Gary Bennett: .273 on-base plus .303 slugging = 576 OPS And just to illustrate the utter horribleness of those numbers, here's Neifi Perez' line in 2004 (one that finally got him released): .276 on-base plus .295 slugging = 571 OPS Yeah. ~Bill
