  1. Anyone else developing a serious man-crush on Mike Adams? I thought so. I think I'm in love. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif ~Bill
  2. Rough night for Ginter. He hit some balls hard, and he had some good at-bats, but nothing to show for it. Hang with 'em, I guess. C'mon, Kolb! ~Bill
  3. Jeff Liefer, you da' man. Welcome back to the big leagues. EDIT: Bill Schroeder didn't hear the story about Liefer getting locked in the bathroom. I think I finally have definitive proof that he is both illiterate and living in a cave. ~Bill
  4. I missed it... when did we trade for Eric Gagne? ~Bill
  5. Why isn't Brooks pinch-hitting for Bennett??? Because double-plays are exciting, and Nedley wanted to please the nice crowd. Gary Bennett is an atrocious hitter. ~Bill
  6. Do any of them have Hitler hair-dos, and if so, do they make you feel ill? No, but we have crashed their party... this is what you get when you mess with us. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  7. And on a different note, how come I haven't heard any criticism of Keith Ginter's defense lately? No "he's got a noodle arm," no "he throws like a girl," no "he sucks at defense," no "he's a utility player"... interesting. I guess that's what happens when Ginter proves all the skeptics wrong... again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  8. Mike Adams, you da' man. I love watching this guy throw - he's freaking phenomenal. This guy needs more love... closer of the future, it would seem. ~Bill
  9. So who are the early Brewers' favorites to be selected as All-Stars? I'll start, and go with the easy one... Cap'n Lou should be the starting catcher for his division on the Midwest League. Who else? ~Bill
  10. Here's your ticket to the carnage, maybe they should have gone bowling... Karma police, arrest this team... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  11. 06/04/2004 - Brewers (Santos) at Padres (Tankersley) The Crew will get its first look at Petco Park tonight as Victor Santos takes on Dennis Tankersley. The Friars' new crib isn't a good place to get one's offense going, but the Brewers will nonetheless continue their neverending quest to prove George Webb's 5-run prediction correct. Daily Brew Series Preview: www.brewerfan.net/ViewDai...portId=240 Feel free to add game previews from other sites if you've got a few minutes... I gotta jet. Go Brewers, ~Bill
  12. Despite the loss, the High Desert game was a joy to listen to. Lots of drama, some nice prospects on both teams, and a comeback by the good guys (wish the Brewers could do that!). The other Dan Kolb pitched well but might have been extended a bit too much... tough call for Ned Yost... err... Mel Queen, so I can't really fault his decision to stick with the hot hand. For those that choose not to partake in the High Desert audio entree, you're really missing out! G'night, ~Bill
  13. LHP Manny Parra allows only an infield single thus far, striking out four... He sounds pretty dominant, too. I haven't heard anything about the new fastball grip and its impact on his pitches' movement, but he seems to be doing okay. I did get a kick out of Roxy Bernstein's comment that "Parra's stats at Sports Network are wrong... but what's new?". There are so many errors in their database that one can't really use them anymore for fear of citing incorrect numbers. The game logs are nice, but the site is a mess and they aren't doing a very good job of quality control. But, I digress. If you're just browsing and not listening to the broadcast, check it out. Roxy does a really good job, and the Modesto team is stocked with some real good prospects. High Desert ain't too shabby, either, with guys like Parra and Vandenberg and Crabbe and Bibbs et. al. Give the Desert some love! ~Bill
  14. And does anyone else think that if he had a little longer hair, he'd sorta look like Jeff Weaver (sans coke binge look)? My brother had never seen Ben before last night, and that's the first thing he said. "That guy looks like Jeff Weaver." I see it a little bit, but I guess the unbiased answer is yes. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  15. Won't Harper be Martin's roster replacement? I don't think he mentioned him, so that could very well be true. I did have some buffering problems early in the interview, but I only missed about 10 seconds I think. Didn't hear him say anything about Jesse. ~Bill
  16. I edited my previous post with a recap of the Curtis interview. One thing to add is that the timeframe for determining what to do with Martin is the end of the Northern road trip, which I believe is the 7th (if that's what he meant). At that point, he'll have an MRI and then they'll take action depending on the results. He said it's definitely a forearm, not his elbow, and he doesn't just have stiffness but also some pain. Very good interview... good questions by Roxy and Curtis is well spoken and was very open with sharing information. Good stuff. ~Bill
  17. Sar - FOT - aye. Sar = like the virus, sans the s; FOT = rhymes with cot; aye = the letter A. ~Bill
  18. Huntsville audio solid for this Windows user as always, although I'm about to swing to High Desert to catch all of Manny Parra's effort this evening... Huntsville's feed is usually very reliable for me, too, and tonight's problems went away after a few innings. Robert Portnoy deserves more kudos... he is just a pleasure to listen to. I, too, have switched over to High Desert and am looking forward to "seeing" Manny pitch again. He'll be in front of family and friends, which is always a big thrill. Interview with HD pitching coach John Curtis as we speak. EDIT: Some notes from the conversation with Curtis. - Forrest Martin got a cortisone shot and has forearm stiffness and pain. He'll be out of commission for a while and they're hoping that works okay. If that doesn't work, he'll have an MRI and perhaps surgery. They are looking for another pitcher to take his spot if he doesn't make it back. He doesn't think it will be a promotion, but rather a new signing... independent ball is the likely source. - Manny Parra is working on a new fastball grip that they hope gives him some more movement. He's debuting it "in-game" tonight. ~Bill
  19. Is anybody having issues with the Huntsville audio feed? It keeps looping for me, and I'm not sure what's going on. Anyone? ~Bill
  20. success against minor leaguers isn't predictive of success against major leaguers Do you really feel that way, David? I think it's pretty definitively proven that minor league statistics correlate well with major league statistics. It's the same game and it requires the same skills... sure, the talent level continues to increase as you move up the ladder, but does that make minor league success irrelevant? You're throwing the baby out with the bathwater because some minor league "stars" become major league washouts. Here's what Bill James had to say about the issue in a Slate Interview: slate.msn.com/id/2084193/ I'm not saying Lil' Ben will necessarily have success just because he has had success in the minor leagues. But to discount the predictive value of his minor league numbers seems quite foolhardy. ~Bill
  21. Good picture of Lil' Ben: http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/brew/img/jun04/ben602.jpg Care of the AP and JS. ~Bill
  22. The obvious comparison is Daryl Kile, who was a really good pitcher before Coors Field ate him. Lots of groundballs, really good curveball, and a good-but-not-great fastball. That would be great, but is probably a high-end projection. Shane Reynolds was basically a slightly-better-than-average starter, and that seems more like Lil' Ben's low-end. Something in between would be real nice. ~Bill
  23. Hey Bill, do you have any troubles getting the MLB feed? Being a fellow Mac guy I've had problems getting Huntsville's feed, going back to last year, and MLB.com's. Not the games so much, but some of the talk programs. I also can't access the scouting videos at home for whatever reason. I can get Huntsville's okay, but yes I have trouble with MLB.com, too. It seems to be hit or miss... I have the right plugins installed, but sometimes they don't seem to register with the site. I've had more luck with IE than Mozilla/Firefox, but even that sometimes doesn't work. I got the scouting videos to work, but now I just tried again and they don't. Weird. I have no idea why that would change within the span of a day, but it did. It's discrimination, I tell ya. ~Bill
  24. Tim Hudson is a short right-handed pitcher. He struggles to reach 90mph on the radar gun, and he doesn't have a curveball like Hendrickson's. Somehow, he's managed to be a pretty darned good hurler. This obsession with velocity is odd. It's not like Lil' Ben is an amateur player we're scouting for "ceiling". He's got a lengthy minor league track record, and it is chock full of success at every level (except Rookie Ball, but I think we can forget about that). He's gotten hitters out... and he's gotten them out in "good" ways, by inducing groundballs and by striking them out. If he can do that while throwing 88mph, who cares about his velocity? Sure, Lil' Ben might not be as good as Big Ben. But at this point, who is? ~Bill
  25. Audio link: Hey, let us know if anybody gets this to work, please! www.newstalk1430.com/ I'm on a Mac (10.2) so I might not be the best barometer, but I haven't been able to get the Indy feed to work for quite some time. Huntsville works fine, as does High Desert (usually), but no Indy. ~Bill
