  1. Ford got out of a big jam there, giving up only 1 run. I'm not sure if he was told to pitch around Sosa or if he was just a bit intimidated (understandable) but the walk came back to haunt him. No hard hit balls, a should-have-been-out at third that Helms booted, a should-have-been-double-play that didn't happen, and a strikeout of Miller. Not too shabby. Have you started a Ford lately? ~Bill
  2. Argh. Should have sent Helms home with one out and Ford coming up, not to mention that Corey "Glass Arm" Patterson was playing centerfield *and* it wasn't even going to be that close. Ford promptly strikes out leaving us with the bases loaded and the only hope of scoring Eric Young. Fantastic. Ginter?!? Ginter?!? Where are you, Keith?!? We need ya. ~Bill
  3. No idea. Darren said that he would pitch on Saturday despite throwing today but that seems hard to believe. I think a lot depends on how many innings he goes. ~Bill
  4. I never thought I'd regret not signing Jamey Wright but I do. He signed a minor league contract with the Royals yesterday and could have filled a spot on the Brewers' or Indy's starting rotations. If we have to turn to Burba, it would have been nice to have somebody to send Indy's way. Burbatious. Burbatacular. Burbantastic. Burbalacious. It's Burba time. ~Bill
  5. The light's are out and so is Ruben. I love the guy but he's just not producing... and as much as I like him, I'm hoping (and predicting) that tomorrow morning we'll hear of his release or demotion. Yost has earned a lot of respect with me for yanking him after 2/3rds of an inning. I'm looking forward to seeing Fordy pitch... What time is it? Burba time. ~Bill
  6. Al, I think this qualifies as your weblog posting of the season. Maybe not... there's been some funny ones... but this one is spot on. For those that don't frequent his Ramblings, what are you waiting for? Head on over... albethke.blogspot.com... here's a teaser: Watching Eric Young play the game of baseball is embarassing. He is possibly the worst 2B defensively in the game, and other than his ability to steal bases, a terrible baserunner. Kudos, Al! ~Bill
  7. My bad on the double post... Somebody with mod privileges want to toss that comment into this thread, pretty please? 'preciate it, ~Bill
  8. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Since when can Ginter be considered a "quality bat"? What a load of garbage. He is hitting .254/.308/.287, he has shown nothing that makes me believe he need more PT. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Don't get me started... Did you think Jason Giambi was a bad hitter after he struggled for his first 100 AB's this year? What evidence do you have that Ginter is a "load of garbage"? 100 at-bats in mostly pinch hitting situations? Boy, you're sure an awesome evaluator of talent. Check out this thread if you haven't already and read more about Ginter's history. In a much larger sample size in the minor leagues, he was a very productive hitter. He's only 27 and he has the potential to be a part of the next winning Brewers team. EY and Clayton do not. For that reason alone, he should be playing... if not everyday, at least a couple times a week. ~Bill
  9. Keith Ginter. That's all I'm going to say as long as Royce Clayton and Eric Young remain in the lineup every day... EY was supposed to sit out, 'cause he sits out every Sunday, but once again Yost decided to stick with the "veteran leadership" and ignore the "good hitter" he has on the bench. It was a great series but I'm just getting sick of watching Clayton and Young... if I wanted to watch senior citizens play baseball, I'd head on over to the geriatric ward of a local hospital. On a happier note, it seems like at least one trade is imminent. I've heard at least two radio personalities talk about how Melvin is looking to do something, whatever that something is, and I can only hope it is to ship EY to a contender where his leadership might have some value. ~Bill
  10. I think the most interesting thing we found out Saturday is that Anthony prefers to be called Tony... Tony Gwynn, Jr. I had heard him called that before but never in print - I'm not sure if it's a recent change or if that's what he's been called all along. Tony Sr. was indeed in Omaha at the CWS and so he was unable to make it to Miller Park. Tony Jr. took batting practice and stayed to watch the game. Good stuff. ~Bill
  11. Sweet... Manny Parra got the win and he's now 7-2, at least according to Peoria's broadcaster. I listened to the last few innings and it was a very exciting game... big strikeout on a checked swing in the ninth. ~Bill
  12. Osik is very difficult to support... it seems like every time he starts to disprove the detractors he has a game like tonight. That throw to third (err, left field) was one of the worst plays I've seen all year. There was no way he was going to throw out the runner and he didn't even come close to giving Helms a chance to catch it. Ugly, ugly, ugly. And with two outs, it didn't really matter... the runner would have scored from second on a single anyway. Oh well. Nothing can damper the joy of sending the Twins fans home unhappy! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif ~Bill
  13. Wow, I just got home and that might be the home game of the year... I didn't think they'd be able to top Vandy's walkoff job against San Diego but this was one heck of a game. Attendance was a little more than 25k and a good percentage were Twinkies fans. I was very impressed - they were enthusiastic, respectful, loud, and generally very likeable compared to our friends from the south who also like to inhabit Miller Park. It was unbelievable how many signs there were, mostly "Bert Circle Me" stuff but also some interesting ones. Sheets pitched very, very well... both runs were a result of (ugly) errors and he didn't give up a home run! That's right - he didn't give up a home run! Not even one! Ginter got an at-bat and hit an absolute rocket to left but Jacque Jones made a web gem quality catch to rob him, slamming into the scoreboard. I tell ya'... get that guy some ABs! I'll be back tomorrow... would be nice to win a series against the Twins! Great game, ~Bill
  14. [Warning: Shameless Self-Promotion] I'm starting a Brewers'-specific weblog and the latest post is a series preview. If you're interested, surf on over to http://mountaincry.com/brew/. There is not nearly enough Brewers' blogs and so hopefully this will be a good addition to Al's Ramblings... and I will take every opportunity to direct fans over to BF.net. If you've got comments or feedback, those are appreciated, too! Thanks, ~Bill [ / Shameless Self-Promotion]
  15. Great post... it definitely will be useful over the long-term when evaluating HD pitchers. I'm not sure what to think about promoting low-A pitchers directly to Huntsvile... I'm kind of hoping that Manny Parra and perhaps Wilhelmson get sent to HD this year so that they can start in Huntsville next year. I can't believe that spending an entire year in High Desert can be good for a pitcher... it might teach you to become a ground ball pitcher but it can also force to you press and injure yourself. It must be like heaven when a guy goes to the muggy air of Huntsville after spending any amount of time in the desert... We'll have to see what the Melvin administration decides... I'm sure it's something they've had to think about. Did Texas have a team in the Cal League when Doug was GM? Anyway, thanks again for the post... it's quite intriguing. ~Bill
  16. I'm about [...] this close to buying a Matt Ford jersey. This guy is amazing... I keep trying to temper my enthusiasm but it's pretty hard when he looks this good on a staff that looks this bad. If he gets hurt and/or he loses his confidence, I will be crushed. But if Yost can keep this going while maintaining his health and his composure, it'll be the Brewers' story of the year. ~Bill
  17. Jim Powell just talked about Matt Ford and potentially putting him in the rotation. He said that he didn't like that idea... he was happy that the Brewers are putting him into selective spots, setting him up to succeed, and being careful about how much they use him. Makes a lot of sense. He also mentioned that Ford will go to the Arizona Fall League as a starter... I hadn't heard that before but it makes sense. And if that's the case, it would probably be a bad idea to get him too many innings this year - wouldn't want him to burn out during/after the fall league. Anyway, figured those of you not listening would be interested. ~Bill
  18. Ginter and Cruz in the lineup at the same time? Incredible. Now just swap Helms in for Clayton and it's coming together. ~Bill
  19. Brett Tomko is almost as bad as Glendon Rusch. I very much hope that the Brewers score about 15 runs today to make up for the last two embarassments. And Ruben: please pitch well today. Thank you, ~Bill
  20. Anybody know if Kolb is going to be available to pitch tonight? Curious, ~Bill
  21. LOL, maybe Glendon will retaliate and get suspended for a week. Might be the best thing for him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif If anybody gets hit, I hope it's Tino again... I just can't get over how lame he acted last night. ~Bill
  22. I'm more interested on the over/under on whether St. Louis retaliates for Tino's plunking last night. Thoughts? I just hope nobody gets hurt. ~Bill
  23. The thing about Billy Beane that people misunderstand is that the reason he is so far ahead of everyone else is because he exploits inefficiencies in the market, whatever they may be. High OBP guys happened to be undervalued so that's who he went after... College players were undervalued so that's who he went after... Veterans who can hit but were "over the hill" were undervalued so that's who he went after, and on and on. The other thing that is key to his success is that he evaluates everything objectively. He and DePodesta have developed a way to measure exactly (for their purposes at least) what the value of each player is to their team. Because of this, they don't rely on assumptions and subjective opinions based on watching a few games. They know, for example, how many runs Eric Chavez is worth to their team. The combination of exploiting inefficiences and diligently applying objective knowledge to decisions is what sets Beane apart. It's not so much what the inefficiences are or what the stats say as much as it is the fact taht these inefficiencies and stats exist and he's exploiting them. ~Bill
  24. That's really cool. I love Tony Gwynn... talk about a consumate professional ballplayer. Thanks for the post! ~Bill
