  1. This line of thinking is too radical and progressive for a management team that loves to give old, washed up pitchers millions of dollars to hold down the bullpen.he doesn't have that veteran's savvy. Macha will never play him. whatever savvy actually is, it's more important than skill.
  2. i was supposed to leave work a half hour ago. just.....can't....leave....yet bonus is i look like i'm working late.
  3. he's gonna pinch-hit for Parra here, isn't he? oh no, only one pitcher left in the pen!
  4. i didn't want Sabathia here for $100 million and I don't want Fielder here for that kind of money, either. mid-market teams that suddenly take a big-market approach to players don't have the finances to make that strategy successful and end up only doing it halfway--that only makes for modest success. you end up with a team made up of two or three superstars surrounded by absolute garbage. so whether or not Fielder would live up to that kind of money is irrelevant to me. we're all crazy over how much Suppan's $12 million is hurting us, so how much would one or two bad years from a $25M guy hurt? For $20M, you can make a mistake with a Suppan but at least sign a Randy Wolf. Couldn't do that if one guy was paid all of it. anybody regret not signing Richie Sexon to a long-term extension when we had the chance? the thought of giving Fielder so much money is made worse by the fact that we don't have a handful of future pitching stars in AAA to make up for the good pitching FAs that we won't be able to afford to bring in.
  5. definitely. i miss the days when it wasn't rare for a player to stay with the same team for his whole career, and the city would benefit by it from building that city hero. you can't allow yourself to get too attached to players anymore because you know you'll have to root against them someday. i actually think that's a big reason that Brewer fans haven't embraced Fielder as much as they have Braun. i'm ironically rooting for the Yankees to win a whole bunch of World Series in a row because maybe it will lead to fans and players getting sick of it and finally doing something about it.
  6. he always fades bad in September from throwing so many innings. assuming he eventually goes back to the rotation, maybe he'll have a better month this year. despite his really bad outings this year, this sure seems like too dramatic of a move this early in the season.
  7. sounds like this will be a great book--just ordered it. i'll be traveling soon and won't get a single baseball update for two months, so this sounds like the perfect book to bring along to feed my baseball fix. I sure hope the Brewers win--but don't tell me! i also finally found a copy of Uecker's Catcher in the Wry, which i'm also looking forward to reading.
  8. don't cities gain and lose minor-league teams with at least some regularity, though? the New Orleans Zephyrs come to mind. i'm also thinking that minor-league fans care more about that team's winning percentage than its affiliation with an MLB team, and Nashville would be better off not with the Braves as a parent club, but with any MLB team that has a track record of fielding good AAA teams. i definitely agree it'd be cool to get to see the prospects often. i live in North Carolina and finally had the money/opportunity to see a West Virginia game, but they moved just a bit too soon. but for the handful of Single-A games i attend around here, i can't say i've overheard any fan comment on a player's draft round and scouting report. a bf.netter would, but we're atypical.
  9. one of the 16 best teams in the National League!
  10. definitely worth $20. i have another picture of him with his mouth closed and the tail sticking out. i'm interning for him right now, so i think a framed 8x10 would be a nice thank you present.
  11. i know exactly what you mean, WTP. i've always been a fan of Hart and root for him even more how that so many people think he should be replaced. i like rooting for the underdog, but then will only root for said underdog if he's a good person off the field. money has a big way of changing things for me. Suppan is being paid to produce, but Hart is being paid to become better (or at least was before his $4.5M). i'd have a harder time cheering for a Bucks team made up of all Sam Cassell types, but then Sam's success also means success for good guys like Ray Allen, so you still wind up rooting for the team as a whole.
  12. i hope the "fans" don't start to boo him at Miller Park like they do for every player now:) Ueck waxing poetic and telling stories, all the while being so-so on the playcalling, is how I became a baseball fan. i know a lot of people sit at home wanting every play so they can fill in a scoresheet, but i really enjoy that Ueck gives off the feeling of a guy who just plain enjoys watching a ballgame. Miller Park has statues of Aaron and Yount, and I think it's about time they added a statue of Uecker, too.
  13. i get the mild impression that a small handful of people are almost rooting for Suppan to stink in today's game. it would validate the "Suppan sucks" comments and further justify wanting him off the team.
  14. i emailed a random person in the Boise Parks and Recreation department, just asking for a general assessment of the job scene there for that profession. her response: "I don't expect any full-time openings in the next three years." yikes. but then Greensboro (where i live now) is in the same boat with budget cuts. waiting reply on a similar email to Austin's park and rec department (although i could always work at a YMCA, too). Boise could very well be the most perfect city in the world for me, but if there isn't a job, that kinda ends it. although i'm pretty well expecting to spend a year or so working as a salesman at an REI before i find anything.
  15. money aside, Fox loses that bit of legitimacy without having a solid late-night talk show, not to mention having no network national news show. Conan was established and respected, and a Conan/Fox show wouldn't have gone the way of Chevy Chase. despite leading in the teenybopper demographic, they're still an also-ran behind CBS and NBC. if the the network ever had any dreams of having a late-night show, they will never do better than Conan, who is both a legitimate host and fits Fox's targeted demographic.
  16. this was one of those rare times when i was watching a full episode, and Norm was just as funny before Courtney Thorne-Smith came on. Conan seems to be the only guy on late-night that Norm is funny on. Conan seems to be the only host who gets his humour, and Conan is the only host who doesn't take himself so seriously. maybe it's a blessing that Conan didn't end up on Fox and we won't have to be inundated with who-beat-who, or have Conan altering his humour again to get ratings and beat NBC.
  17. i'm no computer expert by any means, but i usually do a System Restore and reboot the computer to what it was a few days ago.
  18. when Conan was interviewing Norm and Courtney Thorne-Smith was the funniest moment in late-night history.
  19. Conan will probably also get back to bringing on new and interesting musical guests like he did on Late Night--he understandably had to done that down for the Tonight Show, too. i wonder what sort of celebrities would be attracted to a low-audience TBS show, or if he'll get the same ones that Leno and Letterman get. it might be more interesting if he doesn't attract the big names because then he'll bring out the weirder people. i rarely watch the celebrity interviews, anyway, unless Conan is interviewing Norm MacDonald.
  20. maybe reruns of Family Guy will turn out to be a better lead in than Jay Leno.
  21. i'm not one to swear very often, but based on the number of f-bombs i very loudly dropped at the bar last night, i'm panicking at least a little bit.
  22. it's hard for me to see that it would be possible for someone like Hoffman to just fall off a cliff ability-wise. even if he's lost one or two mph on his fastball, he hasn't used velocity as a weapon for a lot of years now. i mean, this is Trevor Hoffman we're talking about, not some ordinary pitcher. but even if it got to the point that the Brewers had to take him out of the closer role, they'll almost certainly let him get his 600th first.
  23. Southern Comfort is whiskey for chicks.
  24. thanks Crew. i've been researching this quite a lot for the past few days, and it struck me that i'm probably talking about fairly minor differences when it comes to similarly-priced camcorders, so i just picked one. found a Consumer Reports review that basically gave a JVC one an "eh," but based on it being $700. it retails for around $550 now and i just found it online for $400. about zero use for a camcorder after the trip, though. i take it you pretty much have to have a baby to get any use out of one.
  25. pretty sure he was the doctor who only got one AB in the majors--a sac fly--and then he became a doctor and bought blue hats for his wife. later in life he saved a little girl from choking on a hot dog after she was pushed off a bleachers by Timothy Busfield.
