  1. wanted to revive this thread because now i'm also looking for a camcorder and am lost in a sea of product specs and reviews that don't say anything. I'm looking for something in the $500 range, which seems to be about the minimum for what i'm looking for. basically, i'm going to be shooting for a couple months in Alaska and then editing it down to make a movie to send friends, family and others, so picture quality is paramount and stuff like weight or advanced features don't really matter. High Def would be awesome, and then flash memory probably would be easiest. i was about to get something like the Canon HF20 until i read that even though it shoots in HD, it only downloads to a computer in standard jpeg resolution. i've been looking at some Panasonics like the TM55 or the SD10K, but then i keep hearing that Canon has the best picture quality. thanks for any help.
  2. pepper-spraying the dog's owner might also be effective.
  3. TMZ is the only show that at least doesn't pretend it's anything more. a news channel/show being partisan is a far second to how sensational and worthless "news" has become in general.
  4. today my boss said he would eat a mouse for a mere $100. he was talking to three of us, and i immediately offered up my $33, but they wouldn't chip in. really needing to see this, i offered up $50--only $25 for each of them to get to watch a guy eat a mouse--still nothing. i was greatly upset and disappointed in them. chances are, never again will they get another opportunity to watch a dude eat a mouse (and for so little money, too).
  5. ah, i'll do it all again.
  6. i'll agree with that for the most part, FV. certainly the Top 5 candidates for most every job could do the work and have the experience, but it's just that odd thing you can't really describe why one of those five gets the job over the other--same thing as explaining why one girl likes you when another doesn't. to your post, i would add either the in-between job you mentioned, or doing some charity work. you gotta fight the stereotype that unemployed people just sit around all day and do nothing. though i'm still debating Austin or Boise, i'll have that opportunity to move anywhere in the US at basically the drop of a hat. but it seems tough that unless you're interviewing for a high-paying job, you have to pay your own way to the interview. pay your way only a few times and that's hugely expensive. i know you can do phone interviews, but the employer will want to see you at some point before you're hired. to this, i'll ask employers if i have a realistic shot at the job before i pay to go there, but it's still hard to always trust that i have a decent and equal shot at the job. "Willing to relocate" to me is more about cutting off your job search in one city after a set period of time and then moving elsewhere, instead of applying for a job that's 500 miles away. not to mention in this market, companies have plenty of candidates that i'm sure they don't want to bother with the hassle of a long-distance applicant.
  7. i really prefer Weeks in a lower spot in the order to take more advantage of his power and ability to hit guys in, plus i think it suits his batting style more. but i agree that Gomez historically won't have the OBP skills necessary to hit leadoff, and so Gomez should either be second or seventh in the batting order.
  8. being unemployed is the worst job anyone can ever have. i'll be hitting the job market in about July with a Masters degree, but no real experience in the field. i'll probably have the beautiful situation of not having the experience for a management job, but too much education for a lower-level job. i'll be moving with not much money at all and no unemployment to back me up, so my first task will be to apply at a camping store and cross my fingers that minimum wage will be enough to get me by. since i'm not tied down, hopefully i'll be able to find roommates or a cheap place that will let me go on a month-to-month basis, so that if i don't find career-type work in say, four months, that i could just move to the next city. some of you know i've hiked the Appalachian Trail, and when i graduate in May i'm heading off on a very long kayaking trip. it was interesting after my hike that some prospective employers really saw that as a positive trait and a few were genuinely excited to meet me (i think i got some interviews just because they wanted to talk about my hike). but another reaction i got from prospective employers was because of my adventuring, they understandably wondered if i would later quit their job for the next big trip. now i do my best to emphasize to employers that despite my history i'm actually looking to settle down and stay in one place for a while.
  9. i didn't love the Suppan signing at the time, but i didn't hate it. as has been said, for me the signing seemed more for the statement it made. we were getting to be a decent team and he was a coveted FA, and the fact that he'd been awesome in the playoffs said to fans and other teams that we were expecting to make the playoffs in Suppan's tenure. and i can understand that MA wanted to give him an extra year, because every new owner wants to come in and make a splash with at least one top FA, especially to pull him away from a big destination like LA. i was happy with signing him in that MA was telling me that this team was no longer satisfied with signing one mid-tier FA and calling it an off-season like we used to do with people like Jose Hernandez. We gave Wolf pretty decent money, but not that fourth year, so maybe Soup also stands as that "lesson learned" free agent.
  10. it seems odd this far into a series they haven't figured out what to do with the Michael character. he was funny when he first came on as racially-naive, then they had him be the pathetic loser, and now he's mostly just a jerk. i watch 30 Rock sometimes. it's nothing too special, but Alec Baldwin is just so good, his acting alone is enough to hold my attention for 30 minutes.
  11. as a former editor and former proofreader, it's really the job of the copy editors to fix grammatical mistakes. not that Witrado should be submitting chickenscratch as copy, but to complain about the copy errors, that's really a different department. and yeah, we can read an article and say "I can't believe they didn't see that error!" but in defense of my former profession, you run through a lot of copy every single day. you'd be amazed at just what does get caught and fixed, but sometimes things just slip by. but to the use of the word "screwed," i couldn't agree more that it shouldn't have been used. a newspaper trying to sound like everyone else is just the opposite direction it should be going, especially when reading everyone else is so much quicker and more convenient (and free). i expect a higher level of thought from newsmen than "he sucks." that's why i hold a show like Outside the Lines in high regard, but can't stand stuff like PTI, where the journalists just yell at each other like children. Witrado using that word makes him no different.
  12. it's not bi-polar or anything else. sometimes a jerk is just a jerk. professional sports has shown that you can be a far more horrible person than Bradley is, but talent is all teams care about. every time he's dropped from one team, there's one or two more ready to sign him and give him a huge contract. he'll always have a team to play on as long as he's productive, and he'll always make his millions. there's no consequences that would force Bradley to stop and think "oh, maybe i shouldn't say this idiot thing."
  13. i get the blank screen a lot, and maybe it's just me, but i've been noticing that it only happens on big threads--those ones with many hundreds of posts. i don't recall ever getting the blank screen on a thread of only two or three pages. maybe if we split threads once they reach a certain limit it might do the trick. say, a What'sBuggingYou2.0.
  14. possibly the funniest episode they've done. Godspeed, I guess I feel the opposite way you do. I thought it was funny that they always ignored and made fun of Jerry for no discernible reason other than he's timid.
  15. sorry to hear that, dude.
  16. i keep thinking you could put those things in upside down or even vertically and really mess yourself up.
  17. I hope you're right. Dukes is a nutjob. Please keep him far, far away from the Brewers' clubhouse.no way i'd want him. the headaches far outweigh the talent.....and he's got a ton of talent. to a lesser extent, we already had this sort of clubhouse problem with Alex Sanchez.
  18. wow, that's sure a lot to put on Turnbow's shoulders and a lot of leaps to make. and if you use that way of thinking, maybe having Kevin Mench as a mistake in LF motivated us to draft someone who could not only play 3rd, but potentially LF. Turnbow was a reclamation project who got his chance and certainly made the most of it. maybe the success only lasted four months, but so what. every team in baseball would kill to have a waiver pickup be great for a season.
  19. i've been enjoying this thread, too. never having seen Star Wars is pretty amazing. although i've never seen 24 or Lost or NCIS, so maybe that's weird. hmmm...i wonder if we need a mirror thread for all the cool or weird stuff we HAVE done......
  20. we'd be in bad shape to begin with if we hit the playoffs and were suddenly in need of giving a 12th man any meaningful minutes. plus a ton of guys on the roster already can already move up or down a position, be it PF/C or SF/PF or what have you. we'd have more talent on the court with the players we have now in an unnatural position than by playing someone from off the street.
  21. sure, but was the Beer N Brat mustard buy one, get one free? what's not bugging me is for the past many many months i've been planning out a two-month-long kayaking trip for three people into the Alaskan bush, made especially challenging that none of us really know how to kayak. a few days ago i finally hit that point where i feel comfortable that the major planning is done and we're basically ready to go.
  22. i know exactly what you mean. after my hike, my beard had grown to 6" long and it was spectacular. after i got back and had assimilated back to normal society, that beard was the last thing i had left of my short-lived former life. it was hard to cut that thing off.
  23. in the WWF Hall of Fame and he didn't take performance enhancing drugs? I wouldn't have voted for him.
  24. mixed signals.
  25. They have the math skills to make graphs?
