  1. a little surprised at Lopez, but then i don't think it's appropriate for a mid-payroll team to be spending top dollar for backups on the chance that someone gets hurt. we'll make the playoffs if everything goes right, not if we have expensive backups for if things go wrong. not only that, but we had a good offense last year, so no sense in spending payroll to strengthen that more. all this screams to me as cutting budget to make some bigger run at one or two good SPs. I'm not ruling out Lackey, either, because that would be a big splash and sell some tickets, expensive as he'd be.
  2. grad school is my immediate answer. I switched my major I think three times. Looking back, it would have been so much easier to start college by taking general-ed courses first and deciding through those what I'd like to do. you can often get away with taking no/few degree-specific classes for a year or two. PoliSci can be a good pair with anything environmental or geologic (including urban planning). or if you were thinking about getting your MBA. PoliSci/History reads to me "Social Studies Teacher" If you're thinking about "where the money and the jobs are," you could check out one of several publications that list off the fastest-growing jobs, and maybe one of those will click with you as particularly interesting.
  3. if Hart is enough to get Millwood, than i don't think it's too bad at all. not that i'm the world's biggest Millwood fan, but i can't imagine you could do a ton better when it's just Corey Hart that you'd be trading away.
  4. I don't have you all's knowledge about the Bucks, but could a person argue that if Redd and Bogut hadn't have gotten injured, that Jennings wouldn't have blossomed as quickly as he has? Maybe it means a few more losses in the short-term, but maybe Jennings wouldn't have come to discover that he had the ability to take over. Really enjoying this Bucks thread, though. Always thought the NBA was boring until lately. (I think that makes me a fair-weather fan.)
  5. I'm headed to a party for a church group, so I think I'll be either Zombie Moses or Jonah. Jonah is an easy one if I can just find a fish or shark costume. Moses I suppose that'd just be some sorta white robe, white beard and wig and a walking stick. although how do you make that "zombie"? just some red eye paint? Commandments 1-10 will just say "Brains!" for each. some years ago for the Halloween hockey game, the dude in front of me dressed up as the Menards guy. it was hilarious.
  6. my avatar is sad.
  7. i've got no issue with wearing a cap backward, which i'll do on rare occasions. my annoyance is when guys wear their caps indoors.
  8. last Thursday i had a meeting with my adviser about her grading a paper of mine. i tell her that the Incomplete is holding up my student loans, and if i don't get a grade on it in the next couple days, that school bills are due and i am going to have to drop out of school. i go in yesterday to pick up my loan, but no, my adviser hadn't submitted the grade yet. the department secretary calls her at home to get the grade and finishes the necessary paperwork in 30 seconds. i was PO'd.
  9. school bill=$1600. bank account=$1000. it was due at midnight, so i wrote them a bad check so things could get delayed in time for me to scrounge the money. went in again this morning, there was some sort of mistake and i owed $800. got a bad check out there now, but at least i won't be dropped from school. the rent due in two days is another matter altogether.
  10. "Mom says they know he's dying and they're just going to let him live out whatever he has left in peace. But how peaceful is it, really?" we had a cat that lived 23 years. i looked up the world record and saw the oldest cat was something like 24 years old, dude even had a website with pictures of his sickly, dying cats. ours probably could have lived another year, but we put it down because it was better for it. wish the world record dude would have done the same thing.
  11. i'm in grad school, too. you could always just get the Stafford Loans, which don't charge interest until you graduate school. you could just put the money into an interest-earnings savings account and then pay it all back upon graduation. then you can make the profit on the interest if you don't happen to use the money you're loaned.
  12. a friend of mine had a convention at Red Rocks Hotel and really hated it. said the place is getting delapidated already. The Orleans is a good place to play poker if you can stand the smoke, but is definitely my least favourite casino. it's a bit off the strip, too. I basically just play cards when i go to Vegas and like to hit Downtown in the early afternoons. Freemont Street is a better place to walk during the day, just without the light show. the overhead display lets you in the shade during the day and it's easy to dip into the air conditioning. i'll hang out at a Strip casino in the evening. if you like clubs and want to try some celebrity-spotting, then go to the Palms.
  13. i've discovered that the school library carries at least one copy of all the textbooks needed for class.
  14. of course i like Cameron, but i can understand that the Brewers might want to drop his salary to help sign a starter. although i don't understand why the Brewers still wouldn't offer him arbitration. if he accepts, then couldn't we still trade him? that shouldn't be too challenging of a task considering the need for and lack of CF FAs out there.
  15. i would think Sheets' best option at this point is to take a one-year deal somewhere to try and prove he can pitch effectively again. i'd be thrilled to see Sheets in Milwaukee again and would be upset if people booed him. although if Sheets were brought back, it would be a mistake to be slotting him the rotation without a capable 6 and 7 starter for if/when he gets hurt. it seems so premature to say that someone has to take the fall for just one year of suckitude. if you can have the debate of "Was it Melvin/Macha or was it a down year for the rotation?" then you need to give Macha and Melvin another year just to see if this season was an aberration. Plus no in-demand manager or GM would ever want to come here if one bad season meant getting fired. I think Macha did a fine job this year--he got some great work out of the bullpen and constructed a top-notch offense out of basically Braun and Fielder.
  16. cook some eggplant and then put it in a blender with some ricotta and it's pretty tasty. add milk to thin it as needed. i put it over veggie-stuffed shells. good.
  17. i'll get my car battery tomorrow. i'm almost positive it's just the battery. i might only drive the car for a 30-minute drive every other week. so otherwise it just sits out in the hot sun all day, and that heat does nothing but drain the battery. same thing happened when i first drove the car off the dealership lot. i've got a fruit-fly problem in my place. this is going to mean always washing my dishes right away instead of letting them sit for a day or so. maybe it's good that i'll hopefully develop the habit of always keeping the kitchen clean. last night's "moving rice" was truly disgusting.
  18. that's getting pretty far into semantics. we did the same thing to everything CC said and we do it to Doug Melvin.
  19. i can't pitch at all. i have just enough velocity to not bounce the ball to the catcher and i'm not left-handed. but whenever my little brother had ghostrunners at second and third, that's when i always buckled down and got the out, so i'm clutch. i'm gonna ask Doug for a 4-year/$42 million contract.
  20. i wonder if McGehee or Gamel has the higher value to other GMs. if Gamel does, maybe it might be best to hold onto McGehee for 2010 and trade Gamel. if McGehee busts in 2010, then we've got Heether to develop as the future at the position.
  21. really wanted to for next year since i've never been, but am in school for March. but it's nice that i'll almost always have the opportunity since my folks have a vacation house in Scottsdale, and it's a really short drive to Maryvale. (Brewers better not switch to Florida!)
  22. so many food threads lately. dang mustard.
  23. i think an argument about whether Cameron would be a good, productive and safe signing is almost moot. we have such a good offense and such bad pitching, so i don't see that spending our available resources on maintaining that offense in lieu of improving pitching makes much sense. and although i have zero doubt that Cameron loves it here, when i hear those comments it doesn't make me think that he's going to take $5 million less per season just to play here, when historically players have always made those comments and then bolted for another team in FA. it's cynical, but i take "I really like it here and would love to resign" as a signing tool both to tell Milwaukee that we have a chance to resign him, and that other teams better make good offers to him to pull him away from here.
