  1. A major sports team or three is also used by the city to market to big businesses thinking about relocating to an area and helping it stay on the map as a major city as opposed to just a big city. There's a cache to it. It's the same for why a city builds so many parks. I'm in North Carolina now. I feel like a Charlotte team would be about the same draw as the Devil Rays in Tampa. Nobody cares about baseball around here. The Durham Bulls and the Hurricanes are in Raleigh because that city is full of Yankees who go to the games. And it's hard for me to see baseball's popularity on the rise as if millions of people are dying to become bigger fans.
  2. I think what's most interesting is what the Bucks will do over the next couple years. Middleton will get a big fat raise after this season and basically absorb Bledsoe's current salary. But that leaves the team with two stars but not a third, because that money is being wasted on Dellavedova and Henson. So I guess hope Maker gets really good and others step up, or punt more first-round picks to get rid of their expiring contracts. But Giannis is signed through 20/21, so at the point he starts deciding what he'll do (no real contract negotiation since he's an easy SuperMax deal), only Middleton (assuming he's signed) and our last two rookies are signed through then. Even Ilyasova's last year isn't guaranteed. Plus if Giannis were to decide to leave, he'd be declining a $54M fifth-year salary that we could offer and other teams can't. The new Whatever-Center will seat 17,000+. They've sold more than 10,000 season tickets for this coming season.
  3. I bought a 4" memory foam topper once and it was so thick it just enveloped me and made sleeping really uncomfortable.
  4. Random question, but I've been using what is basically a cheap-o Brinkmann for years now with good results. However the cheaper construction means I have to use a lot of charcoal to keep the heat up, and I really can't get it past about 240 degrees. Ultimately that means using a lot of charcoal and I can't do poultry because it won't get hot enough. I've been ok with that since I prefer grilled poultry, anyway. But I've been debating a new smoker since I use it fairly often. I've looked into electric and propane because they're both much easier, but I've heard they don't have anywhere near as good a flavor. Plus I also just don't want to mess with propane tanks. Pellet smokers seem great, but they just get to be too expensive for how much I grill/smoke, and since I'm only feeding myself. Is there a big advantage to getting a good-quality WSM or other charcoal smoker, as opposed to continuing to use my cheap-o one? In your opinion, would it be worth the $300-ish I would spend on a new one?
  5. The fleas are bad enough, but now I'm killing 20 tent caterpillars in the house every day. I've been avoiding it, but I think the only solution I have is to bomb the house. I guess the cats can get put up at a vet ($$$) but I don't have anywhere to stay for a week, myself. Guess I'll go camping for a week. Not that I have the vacation time since my parents want to visit for a full week.
  6. The Bucks have already traded their 1st rounder next year to Phoenix. And if they have any desire to get rid of Dellavadova or Henson, they're going to have to include a pick to do that, too. You can't always trade away your picks because there gets to be a point that the only players you have are ones already on the roster or free agents. You wouldn't have those any of those good contributors like a Thon Maker or Brogdon who give you value in a higher performance than what their salary warrants. And if you're getting no value for your play, you'll forever be a #6 in the playoffs and be no higher. Giannis and Middleton are both going to get PAID. If no first-round talent to fill in the gaps, you can only get so far on free-agent money. You'd be left having to give the likes of Jason Terry and Xavier Munford significant minutes.
  7. Toronto trades three years of an All-Star player for one year of a slightly better player who very obviously isn't going to be with them after the season. Are teams not valuing the idea of being able to re-sign players? If you were a GM who had to think long term, why not wait a year for Leonard?
  8. Just to play devil's advocate, is there really a difference between a group of friends going online to play Fortnite together, and going out to play baseball? Besides the exercise, anyway.
  9. You also can't have a team of three stars and everyone else is a minimum-wage nobody. You still need mid-level talent, some at mid-level prices. Hammond was just bad at identifying mid-level players. I'm a fan of Snell, but when you're a middling team, defensive stopper is probably a player you should just hope to get in the draft. Dellavadova should have never happened, and Henson should have been traded when we weren't making the playoffs and he still had some value. Keep the guys who you need to take you to the Finals and everyone else is expendable. And especially with Henson, why keep a guy when you could have otherwise gotten a pick for him? Was just looking at what a supermax contract looks like. If Giannis left he'd be turning down a guaranteed $56M fifth year of the contract. Sure hope he stays, because Milwaukee will turn him into royalty.
  10. I don't understand why we dropped the option on Jabari, but there's obviously some reason which maybe we'll never fully know. Ton of talent on offense, but at times was the worst-rated defensive PF in the game. You can't forget the first two games against the Celtics when he just stood there in the paint and hoped a rebound would come to him, not even guarding his player. He's a guy you have to convince to make an effort on defense, and I can't figure how giving him $20M is going to do that.
  11. His 3pt percentage has been increasing the past few years. Seems like his numbers relate a lot to how much he's the focal point of the offense and how good the cast is around him. For the most part I don't see him putting up really big numbers next year, but instead be more of a guy who just opens it up for Giannis and guards the particular big centers on defense. The nights he gets numbers I imagine are going to be the nights where the other team focuses too heavily on Giannis and Bledsoe's ability to drive the lane. Milwaukee has an ok offensive lineup and probably will take a good number of 3s since everyone on the roster but Giannis and Bledsoe can hit them. But they've got the players to throw out a heck of a defensive lineup next year, especially if Playoff Thon makes more of an appearance in the regular season. Absolutely no reason Milwaukee shouldn't be fighting Toronto for the top spot in the East next year.
  12. Thanks. I'm going to do the smoker-to-the-oven on the pork. That'll get me roughly 12 hours by the time I wake up and plenty of cool-down time before lunch starts, with 5-6 total hours on the smoke. Will probably run the oven at 215. I've seen the snake method before. My smoker is pretty thin and I need to drill some more holes in the charcoal pan for airflow. It's just near impossible to run it hot, so my method is just dump a lot of charcoal in there. I've debated buying a new one, but I need to get out of the habit of dumping $200 here and there on things. Because a low-temperature smoker only really means I can't do poultry, and I can live with that.
  13. I've been volunteered to smoke two pork butts on Tuesday. The work does a good number of all-together eating things and I guess they're meaningful enough to the boss that when I said "But I have to work that day" it wasn't a problem for me to be in uniform, but sitting on my porch running the smoker. I've done butts a good few times now, but apparently they'll be hungry at NOON. It's a charcoal smoker, so it needs a lot of tending, and it's thin so I can't do the things at 275 like Aaron Franklin does. So we're talking about 12 hours of cooking time not including any rest time. Fortunately I have some unlined parchment paper to do a wrap and not have to wait out the stall. I know I could just dump them in a slow cooker and be done with it. But apparently I have a reputation as a very good cook and this is also the first time I've run my smoker for them. So I don't want to just slow-cook and disappoint them. So two strategies I'm debating: 1. Start it at about 10pm the night before and just wake up every two hours to tend the smoker. That makes it ready by 9 or 10am and then it just rests in a cooler for the remainder. I get that good bark, everyone's happy and I just go to bed early that night. 2. Run the smoker from 5-10pm the night before, then transfer to a 215 degree oven for the remainder and pull it off in time to properly cool. Won't get that bark probably, but will get at least a minimal smoke flavor.
  14. It was the same knee twice. Eh, Cousins would have had to play for a discount, would have taken a half-season to get back to form, and a one-year contract suits his situation. Though I'm sure "nobody else offered" was just from his agent doing damage control, but if you're already in that situation, the Warriors are the best fit. Absolutely no need to rush him back from the injury because they'll still be winning, and maybe you get a ring out of it.
  15. The NFL is losing ratings enough and more and more people are seeing the sport as increasingly violent. Building up family viewership probably wouldn't go well if they allowed marijuana. I still prefer the suspensions for it. Plenty of things in my career that I can't do which are socially acceptable, but I chose the career anyway. I used to say it a lot, too, that it should be easy enough to stop your bad habits for the short period of your professional career. But it's hard to change a tiger's stripes. Plus it's hard to stop when you're hanging around with the same crowds that probably got you into it in the first place.
  16. Made two mistakes this week at work, both somewhat serious and both boneheaded. And they're bugging me.
  17. What I've seen a lot of is that when you're first getting back to an exercise that involves your legs, when the quads weaken it can affect the tendon that helps hold your kneecap in place. And that's what causes the knee pain. It goes away once the quads get a little stronger. A good solution is a patella tendon brace or even just a handkerchief tied just under the kneecap. That holds your kneecap in place and can really reduce the knee pain.
  18. Ilyasova played Center 25% of the time during the regular season last year and 40% during the playoffs. I agree it's a C move, but we didn't have A+ money to be throwing around. It also feels like some insurance in case Parker is gone.
  19. He's a guy who can play the 5, can defend and can space the floor. He's effectively a bargain-bin-find version of the type of center the Bucks are looking for. And this was probably mostly Budenholzer really pushing hard to sign him since he played in Atlanta. He's made a long career for himself out of always being a guy that coaches always want on the team for some reason.
  20. As I understand it, teams are somehow restricted to offering 120% of the player's current salary for extensions like that. So what Milwaukee would have been offering him isn't what they think he's really worth, and is way lower than what Middleton will receive in free agency. It only makes sense that Middleton would turn it down and shouldn't be looked at as some indication he wants to leave Milwaukee.
  21. I'd heard you can pull the principal out of a Roth for a home purchase. So maybe the best bet is to do that, accept whatever debt it takes to pay for the remainder of the purchase, and then buy the rest in full once I'm 59.5. I invest the minimum in the work 401k, which amounts to 12% plus a 5% work-throw-on. But I plan to do the rest myself, though that won't happen for another year because of a car purchase.
  22. Williams would seem like the right pick, but he didn't play at all in what would have been his freshman college year. So really you're talking about a guy who's a year away from being a year away. The Bucks aren't in a position right now to be taking big projects. So I guess this pick is basically just re-selecting Rashad Vaughn. Surprised at the number of players who left after their freshman year only to not get drafted at all. I guess they hate college so much they still don't want to bother playing another year to up their draft stock.
  23. I got to celebrate being totally debt free for all of three weeks before my car broke beyond repair (I shoulda gotten another three years out of it, at least) and I had to buy a new vehicle. So now its a year of paying that off and not building that additional retirement savings.
  24. I have a question for anyone who might understand taxes better than I do. I will have to buy a home/condo or rent when I retire, which will be before 62 years old (maybe 56?), which means I can't pull from an IRA to pay for it. What would be the best way to save for this while paying the fewest taxes? All I can think is regular savings, but yearly capital gains would really cut into the total savings.
  25. The car died from what looked to be a preventable issue. Rather than renting a car to drive home and then buy a new one, I just got one nearby. The paperwork took less time than to pick one out. Having spent $1400 to fix up some body damage just last week on the junk car kinda stings, though.
