  1. You know how sometimes there's that guy in the office who comes in early to work so they can get ahead of their tasks, and they do it every day? The guy who eats lunch at his desk so he can keep working even though he's not getting paid for that hour? The guy who just goes way overboard? And you get pretty frustrated by it because it's not really necessary most all of the time, but at the same time it makes you feel guilty and lazy for it bothering you in the first place? Well the culture of my workplace is like that, and it's frustrating. I feel like I'm going to get fired if I take a 61-minute lunch. Sitting down to have a cup of coffee in the morning has been called lazy.
  2. But isn't coding in the same or worse position in the US, that so much of it is being outsourced to Hong Kong? Plus as someone who has made a complete career switch, you just end up starting at the bottom of the new industry, making less money and working your way up again. Just to play devil's advocate, wouldn't you actually be better off making a lot more money now even in a dying field, than less money over a longer period of time? Plus industry change is often slow and not sudden, so even if your field bottoms out in 10-15 years, you'd be the guy with tons of experience who could still get what few jobs exist, even if they did pay a lot less. Plus, wouldn't there be career options out there which would at least be related to your current career? Then you wouldn't have to navigate such a huge transition. I'd have to think if not a bank, then a mutual fund which has to do much of the same work managing lots of money.
  3. I know a few people who quit watching because of the protests, and others who quit last year after Rodgers got hurt who simply discovered how many better things they could be doing on a weekend instead of watching tv. And even for the Packers I just can't stay up until about midnight to watch a Sunday/Monday/Thursday game. Maybe the NFL will move to QBs wearing flags.
  4. Only predicting 3-4" and 40mph winds by me, but I live a good six hours from the coast. Wilmington is hearing predictions of 40" of rain. Gonna pack some go-bags tomorrow as I'm expecting to get deployed out there. Typically they'll send us to a part to cut trees for a week, or direct traffic, or we'll stand on a road corner somewhere and be told "If a riot happens, let us know." They'll usually send most all of the Highway Patrol guys out there and they get the brunt of it, but they're very highly trained in all that. I'm still expecting to go, but I heard they've already deployed 400 National Guardsmen to help out, so it's always possible the last thing they'll need down there is more people.
  5. I just caught my first mention of "must-win game." Do I win the pool?
  6. What are you supposed to wear to a blind double-date (others are married) at a casual-type (probably outside) restaurant? Sports jacket and no tie, or just button-up no tie? Tie I'm only guessing is way too much. Slacks and saddle shoes are the only obvious part.
  7. What bugged me more wasn't her specifically, but the huge attention people suddenly gave her. It's like some people haven't seen a pretty girl before.
  8. Having worked at Subway, we oftentimes just wouldn't serve someone unless they got off their phone, and told them as much. It slowed the entire line up and it was really annoying. Unrelated but also annoying were the people who'd ask for an individual topping but wait until you completely finished putting it on before they asked for their next topping. ------- So I'm finishing up a 10-day shift which included working our biggest festival in brutal heat/humidity. And as soon as this shift is done, it's pretty likely that I'll be deployed to the coast to help with the hurricane. I'm tired.
  9. That last Chicago drive, I was really worried the Packers would find a way to Albers the game. Really happy to see how well the secondary was performing the whole game. Optimistic, but still worried that Rodgers isn't entirely out of the woods yet.
  10. I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014DAVHSQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've been happy with it. I don't stay a big distance away between the smoker and inside the house, so I don't really know what the effective range is on it. But a head's up, ThermaPro makes a model that looks exactly the same but only has one probe with it, so be sure you can see both probes in the picture.
  11. After Bravo Team was a total bomb for Playstation VR, Firewall Zero Hour has come out and has been an immediate success, especially being basically the first FPS game on a VR platform. Good to see. We'll see in a month or so, though, as VR servers tend to become deserts immediately. Only one game style right now, but I hear the developers already have another game type built, but they don't want to fracture the playerbase until they know for sure if there will be enough people online. I've only played a little bit of it so far, and nothing online yet. I tend to get jumpy when I see an enemy with every new FPS I play, and it's been especially so in VR, so I want to play against the computer some until I relax more. Still hesitant about what the online commentary is going to be like, because I've quit playing games like Call of Duty because the people online were so terrible. Hearing a young kid yell racist stuff the whole match or having to listen to someone's music, or bad players getting called out after every match really takes the fun out of online play.
  12. Jeff Janis was cut by the Browns.
  13. Plus when you're paying him $20M a season or so, that means you're relying even more on underpaid rookies filling out the rest of the roster, which the Packers then wouldn't have. Especially not when the Packers are still using high draft picks to erase the mistakes of high-draft picks like Rollins and Randall. The Bears seem to be trying to model their new team after their '85 team.
  14. I never quite understood the hype for Rodman. An amazing rebounder for sure, but I used to watch him a lot on the Bulls just to see why he always got so many rebounds. And every time he'd run down the offensive end, he'd just immediately set up for a rebound and box out the offensive guy. Well sure you can get in a good position when you have zero ambition to participate on offense. It's the same as John Henson being a good shot-blocker--well sure you can get a lot of blocked shots when you let every opponent easily drive right by you to the rim.
  15. I'll cheer a Mack sign/trade depending on what the Packers give up. Even if they're late, two first-rounders in a year is a pretty big splash, too.
  16. Yeah, maybe it's been long enough I'm not remembering the name very well.
  17. That's interesting, and definitely different. Especially since they've been smoked, are you using the remainder of the heads for fish stock? The stock would be good in a risotto or any kind of fish soup.
  18. As close to nothing as you can get, I played middle-school basketball with Don Davey, who became an offensive lineman for the Badgers. He had no actual skill, but succeeded because he was 4x bigger than everyone else. But I'll attach a story, as told to me by a UW teammate: So Ron Dayne once played a prank on Davey. Don't remember what it was, but it was your standard harmless locker-room prank. But Davey retaliated by putting shaving cream in Dayne's brand-new, expensive Doc Martin shoes, ruining them. Dayne was livid, and as Davey was not well-liked in the first place, a couple teammates held him and Dayne punched Davey in the face, breaking some bones around his eye. This meant no NFL, and so Davey sued Dayne and the school. Davey was a backup OL, but he argued that everyone else on the line was drafted, and so he would have been, too. He was now owed NFL money he now couldn't get. But Davey lost the lawsuit. And that's all I know of the story.
  19. I do appreciate it when the mods step into a thread just to tell people to stop. It makes for a good reminder for everyone else, too.
  20. The "Cubs" comment sounds like something from a socially awkward person who is trying to rib you but doesn't exactly know how. Part of me wonders if the rest of it stems not as much from just being unprofessional but from the person being not entirely socially aware.
  21. I only just now discovered temperature controllers exist. Does anyone use one? I was probably going to upgrade to a better charcoal smoker, but now I'm thinking of instead spending that money on a temperature controller. It shouldn't be too hard to drill an appropriate size hole in my smoker near the pan and then screw it on.
  22. Two decent draft picks paid rookie money are probably more valuable overall than a star player being paid what he's worth. Or trade the two first-rounders for a top-10 pick. I'd rather have a player who has 70% Mack's ability but is paid 20% of Mack's next-year salary. And in this age of passing offenses, I'd rather give $20 to some star CB than a LB.
  23. I've seen news articles which said the same thing, that the top top people make six figures. But it also means playing 12-14 hours per day on Twitch and maintaining an active Youtube account. Also helps to be good at the game, have a good personality and/or be female. I've watched a little bit of Twitch. Battlefield is a favorite game of mine, so there's one person on there who streams daily but also doesn't cuss while playing. It's neat watching someone play who is a world better than me. Or I'll use it to watch a stream of a game I'm thinking about buying to see what it's really like.
  24. Playstation VR has a new virtual DJ game out called Electronauts. I don't normally even like that kind of music, but darn that was fun!
  25. I read the Yelich+Hader+top two prospects and I still don't think it would be enough. Maybe if you add Aguilar and Peralta that would be about right. Best player ever, though? Even when you look at Ruth, Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc.? Although quite possibly the best since they played, yes. So if Harper is probably going to be the first $40M player, maybe in two years Trout will be the first $50M.
