  1. Other than Nottingham, I don't see a team keeping any position player for the whole season. And even he would be tough. With bullpens growing, there's less spots for the bench. Even Wren and Cooper wouldn't be likely to stick. So it's not bad at all, really. There's a few pitchers they need to protect but looks like it should be manageable.
  2. Guessing Stokes will move up to Biloxi, we'll see.
  3. Same issue I referenced above. You are basically assigning a massive amount of innings to pitchers who aren't very good. Whatever upside you may get from only facing the line-up once is totally blown up by the fact that the 5-13 spots on the staff are not going to be nearly as good as your top starting pitchers. In theory if all 13 pitchers were equally as good, it would make sense. In reality though, that wouldn't be the case. Who knows, I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.
  4. That actually sounds worse. So you would need a rotation of roughly 9 guys. Do you really think the 4 guys who round out the rotation would be more effective than quality starters just because they don't face a line-up 3 or 4 times? Just seems like something that sounds good on a computer, but in practice would have horrible results. So you're asking guys like Suter, Wilkerson, Lopez, etc. to each pitch 150ish innings for the season? I can't imagine that ending well. I don't care if every appearance they only face the line-up once, there's no way they could hold up pitching multiple innings every third day. Believe it or not, I really am open to thinking outside the box. I just can't wrap my head around why you wouldn't want to give the most innings possible to your best pitchers.
  5. I still haven't seen anyone address how you're going to find 8 consistently effective starters, when finding 5 is hard enough. We're talking about 40 appearances from each starter. Let's say avg appearance is 3.5 innings. That's 140 innings from your 6,7,8 starters. As Joseph mentioned, BP ERA is less than starters. But that's because relievers are used one inning at a time for the most part. In the tandem start model, these guys would be throwing 3-4 innings. So if Nelson or Anderson, etc. are rolling you either A) take them out as scheduled and put in a worse pitcher. Or B) skip the appearance of the 2nd "starting" pitcher. Now he goes 8 days between appearances which would likely impact his performance next time. Or you move him up, now that disrupts others. It could be done with one pitcher, I think. For example, if they wanted to be careful with number of innings for rookie pitchers they could tandem them together for part of a season and get away with it. I guess I go back to the concept that you want as many innings out of your starting pitcher as long as he's getting the job done in a game, rather than risk bringing in the tandem starter who is not as good.
  6. I have no idea what you are talking about. I've brought it up before but only in passing, never in detail, and it has never once been discussed. Show me the thread or posts where "several people explained in detail why this can't work" and I'll take down the post. If not, perhaps you could just explain your opinion of why it can't work rather than just assuming something that didn't happen. Sorry Adam, as Baldkin just posted the threads. I knew they were out there, but obviously not started by you. I was trying to just ask in a non-judgemental way, but when I posted at zero dark thirty I can see how it doesn't read that way. Others have chimed in already again, but for me it's very simply a matter of giving as many innings to your best pitchers in a given game, and the course of the entire season as possible. Nelson's last start, Anderson's string of a few games when he was lights out are a couple examples. When your starter is throwing well, you want as many innings as possible. What you don't want is guys like Suter and worse automatically getting 3-4 innings every 4th day. And if you make an exception, the whole system starts to break down. It works in the minors because winning isn't the primary goal. It's evaluating talent, getting enough innings for everyone, etc. I mean, in theory, it could work in MLB too if you have 8 starters who are all more or less the same but that would be pretty rare.
  7. Turnbow? No, I think Wilhemsen sounds like the guy.
  8. Didn't you make this same post a few months ago? And several people explained in detail why this can't work?
  9. Thanks young guns, wow what a play
  10. I can't seem to find video of Arcias amazing play last night, does anyone have a link? CWH: Edited the title due to Arcia's continued excellence
  11. Someone didn't read our hat rules thread. I see a dude with a Blue Jays hat in the stands.
  12. Hold the phone. You're doubting WAR??
  13. You're not the only one. This is one of those "records" that really has no historical significance. It's impressive, sure. I doubt anyone was even tracking this until Chapman did it. Would it be less impressive to NOT get a K in his first appearance of the year, then get one the next 50? And let me be the 3rd or 4th person to say PLEASE stay away from any trade discussion here. There are other open threads devoted to that.
  14. His slider doesn't do anything, that thing will get hit hard if a hitter is looking for it. Surprised no swing and miss stuff, at least not yet.
  15. Sedar has been better this year. Does not excuse sending Thames. That is a stop sign 110% of the time. Then Broxtons throw, that should never happen either.
  16. He also was able to swing the Sabathia and Greinke trades, Marcum trade, Lind. At that time they were going for it, agree with that or not, and it produced two playoff teams at least. One of which could have won the WS.
  17. Even though he's not a pitcher, I still like his odds of passing Scott Karl.
  18. Under .500 at home. And they're in 1st place.
  19. Yea, I'm not ignoring Gatewood. We were talking about the top prospects, top 10. Now Gatewood may or may not crack that list mid-season. But either way, I don't see him as a stud, at least not yet. We realize the entire minor league system is not a bust. There are bright spots. But for a system that was regarded as top 3-5 in MLB, just not seeing the star power to justify it....YET.
  20. I didn't want to start a new thread, but curious about general thoughts from our draft experts here. Lots of good info has been posted in various places, but interested if anyone would want to summarize. What stands out to you? Any trends, interesting picks, etc. Thoughts about the top picks, etc. I guess this year I'm just having a problem getting my arms around this draft...
  21. So you picked the worst year by those guys, and they were all .800ish. Proves my point. We're not seeing that from Ray, Diaz, Clark, Dubon, Erceg, Lara, Nottingham, etc. They are not doing well. A couple are doing "fine" most are mediocre.
  22. Would be ironic for a member of the Brewers stellar bullpen to be the representative.
  23. Garza: "Why wait for the bullpen to implode??!? I can do that myself, thank you."
  24. Keep in mind Woodruff pitched 158 innings, Hader 126. So it's easier to keep Woodruff as a starter all year, and he would be next man up if a starter is injured or traded. Hader's innings will still be limited, so adding him to Brewers pen makes a lot of sense. Then they can always stretch him out late in the year depending on how he's throwing, where the Brewers stand, if a starter is needed, etc. I wouldn't mind if Hader developed into a late inning guy for 6 years+.
