  1. I guess it depends what you mean by "now." On or before All star break? Yes, if these guys are still inconsistent. Someone may even be DFAd before that if they have a couple more bad outings. Williams would be a great option, but I have a feeling they may shut him down early this season. It is his first year back after TJ, so I'm sure they'll stick to the plan with him, whatever it is. Hader, the plan is to continue developing him as a SP. They won't bring him up and put him in the pen. Maybe in September, that would make sense. Blazek, Cravy... we've seen that movie before. No problem if they get a chance, I just don't see the need to rush a change from one mediocre pitcher to another. At least right now, today. Wang, well, I'm curious about Wang. LH and has some pitches that work for him. Important to note, the Brewers staff knows far more about all these guys than we do. When it's time, changes will be made. A lot a factors go into these decisions. As has been mentioned, they have already made changes in the BP.
  2. If I may. This *issing match is going nowhere. Whenever someone has the incessant need to be right, it is boring to the rest of us and takes up a lot space in a thread. Sometimes (well, all the time) it's better not to engage with someone you know is only looking to prove their point rather than have a healthy debate.
  3. That would be huge if he keeps pitching like this. Another SP prospect almost out of the blue on the doorstep.
  4. ...Arcia hit .307 (.347 OBP, .453 Slg.) in a full season of AA in 2015, as a 20-21 year old. Orlando is currently 22 years old; in fact, he's a half-month younger than Dubon. One of my go-to comps for players who struggled mightily when rushed into MLB playing time is J.J. Hardy, who hit .247 /.327 /.384 (.711 OPS) in his first year in the majors (2005) as a 22-23 year old. Arcia is currently hitting .246 / .289 / .361 at the same age as Hardy's rookie year. He's less ready with the bat, but he's also a better defensive player than J.J. was. To my mind, if you're going to bring a player up as early as Milwaukee has with Arcia, you have to stick with him and give him the room to improve. That's not to say you can't send him down...but he'd have to look completely lost at the plate before I'd really think about doing so. Agreed. And he's not lost at the plate. Obviously he needs to keep improving, but it's not like he's at .500 OPS or something. He has more power, and flashed that earlier in the season. The sense I get is they're having him really focus on hitting line drives to the opposite field. He will have a hard time getting his OPS over .700 until/unless he walks more and/or hits a few more dingers. But there's no proof he would be better off developing in AAA. As for the fan reaction to Phillips? It was a Monday night game, meaning mostly season ticket holders. Those aren't casual fans, so they know who Phillips is and that he could be part of the future.
  5. That works both ways, Brew. They picked up guys like Drake for a reason. What if you quit on him too quickly (such as Brandon Kintzler) and he goes on to have a very successful season elsewhere? Most won't. Few will. That's the life of bullpen roulette. Sacrificing your season because you think a 30 year old pitcher may figure it out is not the way to go IMO. Also nothing stopping Drake from going to AAA and getting better where it really doesn't matter record wise. Games count in the pros. The Brewers front office needs to start figuring that out. Sacrificing your season is a little dramatic. It's not as if Stearns won't make a move if these guys continue to be inconsistent. GMs can never seem to make a move fast enough for fans when a player is struggling. There's over 100 games to go. Peralta was given a chance as a starter, now he's struggling in the pen. Do we DFA him also? I mean, I just don't think it's realistic to cut 5 guys and bring 5 up. It's a process, but there's nothing wrong with seeing if guys not named Knebel or Barnes can put it together. Some of the guys you like on the 25 will struggle in the 2nd half, that's baseball. For all we know Hughes and Drake will have great 2nd halves. As has been pointed out, you can't say Stearns has done nothing. He just hasn't done as much, and as fast as you would like. It's not like we have Mariano Rivera wasting away in AAA.
  6. Problem is, none of those guys (with the exception of Feliz) has been as bad as people are saying. Not many bullpens where you feel really confident about 4 or 5 guys, much less 8. Each reliever has had a mix of mostly good appearances, but yes too many clunkers. It only makes sense to figure out which, if any, can be more consistent. I mean Ramsey, Espino, Archer, Barbosa? Do you really think they'll be able to come in night after night and handle the job? It's frustrating, I get it, but making a change just to make a change is usually not a good strategy. This will work itself out over the next few weeks. One or more of these guys will get better, maybe. One may just self-destruct. Then down in the minors, someone will rise to the top and called up. Bullpens are always a work in progress, and as fans we're rarely satisfied.
  7. He could, yes, but look at how little playing time Franklin is getting. You don't want to keep Phillips up if he's going to be used as the last man on the bench. If he does get regular starts, that means far less playing time for Perez and Aguilar. Maybe we're ok with that, but something would have to give. As you said, when Braun returns, then it's really difficult to find regular playing time for Mav. Replacing Broxton would be the only way, and I'm guessing they will (should) give him more time to work things out.
  8. Just because they shot it down doesn't mean it's not true. He's thrown 2 innings his last 2 outings, his family was interviewed and said they're trying him out in the pen. Managing his innings in June by having him make 2 inning starts all of the sudden doesn't make much sense to me. If they really aren't concerned about him going to the MLB pen and just want to develop him as a starter they'd be trying to build his innings up, not reduce them. I guess people are going to draw their own conclusions but the writing seems to be on the wall to me. It makes perfect sense. If they want starts out of him in Mile come Aug or Sept, they need to limit his innings now. Then use July to stretch him out. If the plan is to use him as a reliever, why is he still starting games??? Seems to me they would get him used to coming out of the pen if that was the plan.
  9. Fangraphs shows chances of Franklin/ Viilar getting that run in at 0.00000002%
  10. I'm curious to see how many times Auggie calls him "Burt Phillips." I honestly don't expect he'll be here for long. When Shaw comes back, that means Perez has no home. He could take over at 2nd I suppose, now Sogard is out. Then you have Aguilar frozen out, since Thames wouldn't be playing any LF. And that's all before Braun even comes back. So I really only see him up for a few days unless he does take Broxton's spot, and I don't think that's going to happen. Broxton has done enough to keep a spot. He strikes out a lot, but so does Phillips.
  11. Honestly, it's the change-up that I think most pitchers should learn and use.
  12. Brew, you lost all credibility when you said those two dp balls were tough. They were the very definition of the tailor-made. Maybe you met Villar at fanfest and think he's your friend now? Honestly man, no bone to pick wit h you but thats the vibe I'm getting.
  13. Couple other factors that would have a marginal effect on the numbers: 1) Brewers, being an NL team, would have pitcher up in some of those situations vs the AL teams that don't have that variable. 2) Manager's philosophy matters. As we know, RR would bunt a lot with a runner on 3rd. CC prefers to swing away. 3) Ed Sedar.
  14. Yea, baseball is like that. Let's not forget the year T Plush had. Sogard may only stay hot for another week, or it could be for the rest of the season. Nothing says he has to cool off this year to match his career numbers. I mean, will his OBP stay this high all year? Of course not. So there will be some cooling off no matter what, just a matter of how much.
  15. This rumor never made sense to me. Braun will be back soon, and then you still have Perez and Thames where it will be tough enough to get them enough starts in the OF. So how will Brinson or any OF called up get any ABs? Woodruff doesn't make sense either, rotation is set for now at least.
  16. New method for capturing pitch speeds. Every fastball is up a tick or two.
  17. I don't mind Franklin starting, as long as he's on the roster give him a start once in a great while. Bigger issue to me is taking Broxton out of that massive CF.
  18. I was surprised to learn Burnitz and Jenkins were #3 and #4 respectively for the Brewers in OPS. I'm not sure I would put them on the Top 10 list or not, but if production matters, they produced more than almost all the guys being mentioned. (Also surprised to see Burnitz actually played 782 games for the Brewers.)
  19. It's always been a combination of building fir the future, yet trying to win now. That's why a guy like Sogard is even on the roster in the first place. Otherwise they could have brought Rivera up. Same goes for guys like Carter, Feliz, etc. Again, we're not even at 1/3 mark of the season. It's not like Villar is being shut down for the rest of the year. First place may very likely be fool's gold, but as long as they're in it you play guys who are producing. Also, every player is different. CC stuck with Arcia, and looks like it's paying off. Villar is just jumping at pitches, and maybe sitting him for a bit is what he needs. But there's over 100 games to go, so give it time to play out.
  20. Seriously? Of course someone will argue! But not me. I'm a big believer in the "hot hand" and you ride that as long as it lasts. If they were 8 games under .500 right now, I would see it differently. Actually, CC has already been playing the best line-up most nights. Playing Aguilar at 1B, moving Thames to LF. Playing Perez as much as he can, etc. We're still not quite to the 1/3 mark in the season, so Villar will have opportunities to get back in the line-up.
  21. Waste time deciding to review, waste more arguing abouf it, and the play is never even reviewed. Sounds productive to me.
  22. So refreshing to sit back and watch a SP in cruise control.
  23. Burnitz and Jenkins have to be in the mix at least?
  24. The other thing that really helps the BP is relievers who can eat up more than one inning, or even one batter. Stearns seems to be well aware of the importance of this, as you can see the Brewers doing this more and more. If you can get through every game using one less reliever than you typically would, that's huge. I'm old enough to remember you really wanted at least 7 innings out of a starter, with some complete games here and there. But the game has changed. Moving forward, having a really good BP will be just as important as a really good rotation. Never thought I would see the day, but it happened pretty quickly and we're there already. Hopefully the next step is to eliminate the closer role. If you build the pen with at least 5 really good pitchers, any of them should be able to pitch the 9th- or even the 8th/9th. That will take a mind-set change from everyone- Stearns, CC, and the players.
