  1. Would need to know who is included in that 30%. For example, does it include players who put in half a season or less and were promoted? Or guys like Coulter that came up later in the year? But even at that, top 30% of a league is not top prospect territory. You're looking for top 5-10% in a league to be a top prospect- unless age is much younger for the league, etc. At any rate, you're right, "bad" year was not accurate. Down year is probably more accurate.
  2. Broxton belongs in the same bucket as Arcia, Villar, and Davies. Young, cheap, controllable for years, and potentially part of the next competitive team. In theory, any of them could be traded for the right deal. I just don't see a team willing to offer what it would take to trade any of those guys. If someone offered a Hader for him? Sure, I would do that.
  3. Just don't understand the heavy knock on him to the point he's outside the Top 10 and Top 100. Simple, he had a bad year. Rarely do top prospects sail through with great years then take a step backwards. It doesn't mean he can't turn things around. It doesn't even mean he's not a Top 10 prospect. It's just that the system is deep and there's only room for 10. I wouldn't question it much if Phillips is on or off the list really. He's right there in the mix, and all that matters is his performance next season.
  4. I don't think Arcia starts in AAA, but he could go down if he really struggles. Scooter is a cheap, predictable insurance policy if that happens. Villar trade is interesting. Really all depends if a couple teams believe he can continue what he did last year. If someone wants to give up a top 50 pitching pitCher and a couple others, sure, go for it. I just doubt anyone offers that. At the deadline if he's having another great year? Much more likely.
  5. Is this "exec" even from a team on Braun's approved list? Pretty easy to make a statement like that when your team has no chance to trade for him anyhow. This "exec" doesn't sound like a GM either, or he would have been referred to as one. So now a throw- away comment by some mysterious "exec" has been picked up by espn, Fox sports, and all the other national sports media. So the story is now the story. Gotta love journalism these days.
  6. I would add Dubon and Taylor Williams, and bump down Clark and Bickford. But that's nit-picky, I may be the only one who would rank those two as Top 10. Perfectly legit Top 10 list there.
  7. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don't think it's fair to say the Brewers are EASILY a 75 win team in 2017. It's possible if everything and then some goes right. But they are not easily winning 75 games. Projections for the line-up are really hard this season. Other than Braun and some extent Santana, everyone else carries big question marks. I expect the rotation to be very similar to last year, overall. Bullpen almost certainly will be worse, just a matter of whether that is marginal or much worse.
  8. That about sums it up. But after 4-6, still would be cool to get into the tournament and have a shot at it.
  9. This has been said by others somewhere in these 40 pages, but what the heck, nothing else going on. I actually think it's the opposite. Brewers fans are more jaded about Braun than fans in LA, SF, or other places. To them, he's just one more PED guy out of dozens and dozens. Whereas, to Brewers fans, it was more personal. Nobody cares. If he rakes for their team they will love him. If he's injury riddled or fizzles out the last couple years the fans will turn on him. But that's all based on production, nothing else.
  10. Which teams question Nelson's mental toughness? I don't recall reading that anywhere. Also, if he can really blossom as a #4 starter, why wouldn't the Brewers keep him? Because if that's true, would make sense to lock him up long term for a cheap price, and he can blossom as they build a better 1-3 in the next couple years?
  11. Yea, I don't get the whole issue with "moving." Braun has a home in CA. Not even sure how much time his family actually "lives" in WI? I mean, this isn't 1952. Braun can live wherever he wants, or multiple places, and a charter flight is a couple hours from anywhere.
  12. Yea, not only do any of US know, Stearns himself doesn't know the answer to either one of those questions. I mean, #2 is easy, impossible to know what kind of player Braun will be 3-4 years from now. But even #1, Stearns doesn't know how long this rebuild will take. If Hader, Woodruff, Williams come up and dominate right away the time line is moved up. If the next wave of SP isn't that great, or takes longer to develop it will take longer. Now add the bullpen and the line-up into the mix of uncertainty. That's why at this point of the rebuild he just doesn't know either.
  13. Always forget about Wrightstown! Yes, sort of like Hortonville/Greenville, only Northeast of Appleton instead of West. Both are more rural, Wrightstown is smaller, but Jericho is right- new schools there.
  14. That's what AAA is for. You need a full rotation in Milwaukee and CS, and at least a couple of those guys in CS need to be AAAA type guys who can come up to help when necessary. I see no over-abundance of starting pitching yet.
  15. Wish that was true, but I don't think the odds are anywhere near that high. If he wasn't traded at the deadline, or the winter meetings, I just don't believe the odds go up to 99.9%. Garza called, he strongly disagrees ; )
  16. First, I don't think Stearns will base his decision on fan reaction. Not even 1%. He will do what's best for the team- period. If Braun stays the next four years, it certainly changes things. My vision for the OF is to have 4 really athletic guys, great defensive players, speed, solid hitters. And based on draft picks, players signed etc., I think the Brewers see it the same way. So if Braun stays, you have two guys in the corner OF spots that don't fit that plan at all. Maybe Braun or Santana can be moved to 1B, but there may be reasons that's never going to happen. We just don't know. That means they could probably try to trade Santana at this time next year, but I have a feeling it will be tough to get proper value for him. We'll see what kind of season he has. All of this I can live with for 2017, maybe even 2018 if Braun continues to hit .900ish. Not a bad problem to have. It's the last two years that could really be a problem. I just hope Braun is willing to expand the list of teams he's willing to play for, seems that's the best path out of all this.
  17. Yea, he's talking about Appleton inner city. Nothing like Milw, Chicago, etc. Maybe a better way to put it is Appleton North has a lot of upper middle class, so does Neenah. East is more "regular" middle class, West is more diverse. I know plenty of kids who went to West, and it's a good school, they really liked it there. Don't get the impression it's a crime-ridden crap hole with poor academics. Just not true. All of that is really overblown, in my opinion. With open enrollment, that is gradually changing and North is seeing some of the same issues with drugs, etc. Just a sign of the times, no escaping that anywhere. Honestly, with your oldest in pre-school I really wouldn't worry about HS yet. Find an area you would like to live. More rural, suburban, or in the "city." Elementary school far more important than HS at this stage. Maybe your kids won't want to even play sports by the time they're HS age, and whatever school is string in athletics could change by then- we're talking 10 years away.
  18. Plus we had one in Braun. Arguably Fielder for a couple years at that level. No WS. Add players across MLB like Greinke, Kershaw, Verlander, Trout, Harper, King Felix, McCutchen, Beltre, etc. Seems it's not as important as we may think? I think what happens some years is you start with a really good team, and then get career years out of a couple guys. So that player may not be a perennial MVP or Cy Young, but maybe he is one season. I guess what I'm saying, of course it would be great to have a couple franchise players but that's not the only way to win it all.
  19. Just say no. This still goes on because almost all rookies have fun going along with the traditions. If you don't want to dress up like a woman, don't do it. More than likely the vets will let it go if they really see a player can't take it, or tease that player in a different way. If they just can't take it, that's the Manager's job to step in. There doesn't need to be some edict from on high to declare what is and is not acceptable. Everyone if there to win, and the Manager and the leaders of the team wouldn't let that get out of control. For example, I know the Packers have really cut down on that stuff. Not because the NFL said so, but because McCarthy said so. And that becomes the culture of what is and is not acceptable. By the way, I think hazing is stupid. It's why I never joined a fraternity in college. No way I'm going to do something gross, stupid, or even dangerous to be a member of a group. Not going to happen. And there needs to be zero tolerance for hazing in HS- zero. But if 20 somethings playing MLB can't either go along with it or just refuse to do it, that's on them.
  20. They're grown men, they're not forced to do anything.
  21. One of the things I love about Stearns, he does things quietly. As a young GM, must be tempting to toot your own horn, leak things to show how hard you're working, various possible deals in the works, etc. But that hasn't been Stearns M.O. We have no idea. Either it's quiet because Stearns is keeping it that way, or it's quiet because there's nothing close to getting done. Winter meetings provided some urgency, and deals got done then and shortly after. Now we're in a period of time where there is no urgency again. I also wonder if Mark A has (or will) go to Braun and say "Look, we tried to make a Dodgers trade work, it's just not going to happen. You know we're rebuilding, would you be open to Texas, Houston, Fill in the blank team?" Just not sure if the no trade clause is there so Braun at least has option to decline (or can accept), or if it's there because he absolutely will not go to any team not on the list. Just seems that a player at his level would want to have another (better) shot at winning a WS?
  22. It's not just luck. If you have a crappy system, luck won't do you any good. But if they continue to add talent to the system, yes it increase the odds you'll hit on greatness in a player or two. You know, there is one more way to add that franchise type player- but nobody is going to like it. If Villar has another great year, and/or Arcia shows he can hit MLB pitching you can trade one of them (or even package someone else to sweeten the deal) for a TOR starter or big time bat. Someone at the AA/AAA level. Problem with that, there's no guarantee that player will reach his ceiling. It is a risk. But there could be a team out there that would love a really good controllable SS, and willing to give up a big bat or #1 potential SP. I AM NOT advocating the Brewers do this, simply saying that could be a way to get that type of franchise player.
  23. No doubt. No different than a lot of guys in our Top 25. I mean looking at the list, you could say that about literally half the guys on that list.
  24. Yes, same district. Greenville is just a town next to Hortonville, feeds into Hortonville HS. I think graduating class is around 250, maybe a little higher. But it's growing. Now Div 1 (just recently), part of the Fox Valley Assoc conf. (I will get to the stereotypes some day)
  25. Welcome back Hiram Burgos. Signed to minor league contract with ST invite.
