  1. Well, we know they want a shooter so it could be Booker. I don't like giving up assets to move up and get a slightly better player, if you're going to move up then move way up. I would be perfectly fine with Portis or Looney there.
  2. It's also against the rules of MLB, the First Commandment really. You may not like it, but every MLB knows that is something you don't mess with. Do you really want to parse it to say MLB players can bet on baseball all they want, as long as they don't bet against their own team? Really? Rose could have played with the rotation to try to get his #1 vs opponent's #5. I could give more examples, but again it doesn't matter. You can't gamble, and you can't ignore the rules if you don't agree with them.
  3. That's just one year. But you're right, 17 is an area of any draft that is far from a lock of getting a solid contributor or better. Last year it just so happened that teams that picked around the 15-20 area took guys who weren't ready but had higher ceilings. Just like the MLB draft, you can take college guys or HS guys with higher upside. Looney and Harrell are examples of a guy who will need development, while someone like Portis will be able to play right away. ----- Continued here: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=32909 Feel free to continue any discussion in the new topic.
  4. I don't care if Rose lied or not. He gambled on baseball, and that's strike 1,2, and 3. The fact that he bet on his own team makes it worse, but that doesn't even matter to me. After the Black Sox scandal it has been clear ever since you simply can not gamble, it is cut and dried. The PED users...that's up to the voters for the HOF.
  5. Sure, the "compete every year" strategy can work. Just ask the Cardinals and Giants among others. Problem is, of course, the smaller the team salary the more difficult it is to pull off. Margin for error is much smaller. You better have a great farm system year in, year out. You need to hit on virtually every FA move. Ditto on trades. I have no problem with this strategy when they had the core of Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Hart, eventually Lucroy. But it should have been clear after that last run with Fielder that it was time to rebuild, not keep trying to plug in holes. When you do it on your own terms, you're more likely to get better value back...as opposed to now when they're forced to sell and everyone knows it.
  6. Of course he lies. He shouldn't be in the HOF- period. Betting on baseball is forbidden, he knew it and did it anyhow- including betting on his own team. I really don't even care if he lied about it or not, the offense if gambling.
  7. There is a transaction fee charged by Visa, MC, AMEX. Not sure what it is, but I think it may be .50-$1. This is for credit, not debit. So you can see why retailers would want to avoid that- especially on smaller purchases.
  8. U.S Open has always been about penalizing bad shots and rewarding good ones. That tricked up course didn't play that way. When you hit your approach shot right where you need to, and it rolls off the green 50 yards... that's ridiculous. I'm going to guess Nike wanted it there.
  9. I've read over the thread and have a few thoughts: 1) I don't know where this idea of being "overloaded with CF" comes from. We have Taylor who is not anywhere close to guaranteed avg MLB CF. Wren and Reed are not true CFs, and then you're talking about guys at the rookie league level. That's not stacked by any means. 2) This idea of including Garza for a salary dump makes no sense. Contracts of Lohse, Broxton, Ramirez, likely KRod are gone next year. You trade KRod so you can get young talent, the money really doesn't matter as much. 3) I guess I see KRod as having more value than most of you. He is a proven closer, and at his age you're not worrying about his FB losing steam or anything, he lives off the change. He's actually a value to have as a closer for another year. Key is you need more than Toronto looking around. There are more teams that that who need/will need a closer- that's when you can start dealing from strength. I don't suggest he's worth a top 50 MLB prospect either, but he is worth a couple young players with higher ceilings. For example, let's say Jorge Lopez/Diaz in return. Two guys AA or lower, probably lower, that have true potential.
  10. For pure PG, I would take Tyus Jones over Grant. We don't need yet another PG who can't shoot the 3 ball. Plus Jones has more upside, he's so young. In fact, I think we'll back at this draft in a couple years and wonder why Jones wasn't a lottery pick. Not sold on Hunter, seems he's already at his ceiling. Big time scorer, but on a team where he had to be. Can you imagine what Jones would have scored on that team? At the 4, I would take Portis, don't want Harrel. So I guess I would take Dekker or Frank if they're around, then Portis, then either Jones or Looney.
  11. Oh, I would take Booker for sure- I just don't see any way he will be around at 17. Hunter, I'm not sold on. Just my opinion, I don't pretend to be a draft expert. I would stay away from WCS, just doesn't seem like his personality would fit- but could be wrong. Certainly wouldn't want to throw in more picks or players to get him. Mocks are interesting. Some have Dekker available, I've seen one that has Kaminsky available. They all have Looney available. Hey, it's a pick at 17 anyone will have flaws but they should be able to get a really good player, maybe even one with Wisc roots.
  12. Yea, if he is this great LH pitcher with so much promise, $300,000 would be nothing to any team interested.
  13. I agree there is something to team unity- especially when you don't have a LeBron or Curry. But that doesn't mean you just keep signing everyone no matter what it takes. Took a while for them to adjust replacing Knight with MCW, not sure they're still quite the same. As far as targeting a shooter in the draft, I don't know about that. IF they sign Middleton, like it or not, whoever they draft won't be a starter. Parker, Giannis, Middelton, and MCW (or whoever the PG ends up being) are the ones who need to shoot better. You can draft Hunter all you want, but that's pittance compared to the effect you'd get if the starters, the "stars" shoot better- that's where it needs to come from.
  14. Can't help it, never been more excited for Helena's first game. Guessing the arms currently unassigned still playing in college WS will end up in Helena as well?
  15. 2018 is possible. Again, it all depends on how long it will take to build a viable rotation. It's relatively easy, especially with the arms we have in the system already, to build an average or even great bullpen. Very realistic to build a line-up by 2018, they can do that mostly in-house as well. But I don't think we have any idea if a competitive rotation can be built by 2018. Peralta has taken a step back, and Nelson hasn't taken a step forward yet. With no guarantee, by the way, Nelson will ever come around. Then you still have 3 more spots to fill, and they can't all be Fiers types. You basically need 3 guys who are a 2014 Peralta or better to be a legit rotation, and that is light years away.
  16. I think fans will support the team if they understand what the Brewers are trying to do. To a lessor extent fans are supporting the Bucks rebuild, most people "get it." Actually, even more true for "casual fans." They want to come out and tailgate, have fun, etc. and don't really care what the record is. Yes, attendance will suffer Mid Aug-end of season the next few years. Then again, payroll should be way down as well so it won't hurt them to have 2.2- 2.4 MM or so for 2-3 years. They just really need to build a viable rotation from within (through the help of trades) and the rest will fall into place.
  17. The pessimism comes from the fear that Mark A. does not want a full rebuild. And it's not like we're getting that feeling out of nowhere. It has been his M.O. since he bought the team, and Melvin and others have made comments recently that sound more like shuffling the chairs on the Titanic than rebuilding. At some point they need to step back and take an objective look at what they're rebuilding around. Above all else, you need a rotation. Peralta and especially Nelson do not look ready to be top of the rotation starters. And those two guys are the BEST shot to do so. Who else? Fiers, Jungmann, Thornburg, Cravy.... the guys in AA. You would need incredibly strong Brewers goggles on to build a contending rotation out of that. I'll speak for myself, that's why I'm pessimistic. They need to tear it down and rebuild, and I just don't believe they'll do that.
  18. Safe to say Lara is headed to Maryvale?
  19. Not sure if this is true, but heard somewhere the Cards tried hacking into the Brewers AV servers to turn off the ribbon scoreboards
  20. He's not. He was perfect on defense, but could not function in the offense. And I'm not talking about scoring, I mean the pick and roll, passing, just an overall flow. I agree you don't need a classic center to win these days, but I think they do need a center with some bulk and muscle to mix it up with teams that have that type of player. Overall, I love rim protectors. I just think they need a "big" big to go along with those guys.
  21. I agree Mark A won't let go of Braun, Lucroy, or Segura. I just can't imagine him accepting a 5 year rebuild, even though that's what's going to happen if he wants it to or not. But I do think they will try to trade Lind, KRod. Both are signed through next year, and no reason to want to re-sign them. So I think Melvin can convince Mark A. they need to trade them. Same with Gomez, I think they see what they can get for him.
  22. Yes, Cubs would win the division. Then another WC spot opens up. Then again, this could all take a while and the ban would be for next season. I don't think MLB will go that far, but they should. Now that everything is on the cloud, MLB needs to come down really strong on this so nobody ever thinks about doing it again. And it doesn't matter if this was technically "hacking" or not. They gained access to a network that is not theirs, that's the crime- however they were able to get in.
  23. If a player can be banned from baseball for gambling, the penalty for an organization doing something like this better be very severe. Banned from post-season for 3 years, and loss of multiple 1st round draft picks. Oh, and jail time for whoever was personally involved in this.
  24. I don't think it's comical. There may come a time, soon, when you need to open up a few spots on the 40 man roster. You're not cutting him from the organization, they're talking about DFA- those are two different things. With that said, you still have guys like Hellweg, Strong, Kintzler, a few others that I wouldn't shed a tear for if they DFA them. As usual, the truth is usually in between. No rush to DFA Wang, but at the same time let's not pretend he's a huge prospect just because he's left-handed. He has been mediocre every stop along the way.
