1. I guess I just don't see that we could say our MiLB coaches and roving instructors are any better than most other organizations. I don't think Cain or Escobar would have fared much better or worse in another system. If you include Hardy and Gallardo you have to include Lucroy. It isn't like other teams are not also developing guys out of later rounds.
2. I think it could be argued that we don't have good people on the defensive coaching side since most of our players that had defensive deficiencies didn't improve until they got to the majors. Really the guys that have contributed from our MiLB system have mostly been top of the draft picks. Guys that you would almost actively try to derail their careers. The other contributes have been scrap heap pickups. I really don't see anything special so far from the minor league development. I guess you could argue Hart but he was a pretty good hitter through his MiLB career.
3. SO even if we do have less numbers it still doesn't make this a bad MiLB system. The players are what any system is evaluated on. The people in the development system itself will look better if good players come through it even if the people developing those players are not good.
4. If this event isn't good enough for the Hawing clan it isn't good enough for me.
5. They deserve to be a lightning rod. They are as far above the other rich teams as the rich teams are above the middle teams.
6.
Betancourt had 418 assists, 60 more than Escobar primarily because the KC pitching staff had 223 fewer (1258 to 1035) strikeouts than did the Brewers. With one premier strikeout pitcher added to the rotation in Greinke and another above average strikeout pitcher in Marcum replacing the innings of lesser strikeout guys, that 1,258 total is likely to rise further. No, he had more assists primarily because Betancourt played 200 more innings at SS last year than Escobar did. They had almost identical assists per inning.
7. I think our farm is fine, we have great major league talent with nearly everyone except Prince and Weeks (who I think will sign extension) for at least 2011 and 2012. Right. For the next 2 years. If Weeks, Fielder, Marcum, and Greinke all leave we don't have guys anywhere near their talent to replace them. We are a low 80/high 70 win team. Not early 2000's crappy but not good. I think there is a good chance 2 of those guys stay but again, we dont' have guys of their caliber in the farm system.
8. My hope is C-Dick gets the big half of the CF platoon so he won't be available to pinch hit much. Gamel's defense might improve by having a different person to work with or it might not. He has been with Don Money for 3 years and they might not mesh well. It might be a case where they think of each other as a young punk and crotchety old geezer. I am not sure that is the problem but Money mentioned Gamel is doing the same thing wrong over and over again.
9. We have good talent but only for the next 2 years. We have a few very good players dropping out soon. It isn't like the players we have will be around until the farm gets better. That is why the MiLB talent is concerning. I don't think we will be terrible after 2012 but we are probably in the 70's for wins and I am ok with that becasue we are looking good at the MLB level.
10. The problem is that Gomez has almost 3 years worth of PA and has shown virtually no improvement. A fact that other teams are well aware of considering they threw 5% fewer pitches in the zone last year and he just kept swinging. He has terrible plate dicipline and no indications that he is improving. Swiinging at bad pitches out of the zone leads to worse contact. He is a good defender but not so good that we wouldn't benefit from a platoon. My hope is that Dickerson impresses RRR and they send Gomez to AAA to work on his hitting. If Gomez was showing some, any improvement I would have some hope. At this point I do not. Hopefully Schafer can have some success at AAA or wherever he ends up this year. We always have to take what the FO says with a grain of salt. Of course thaty are going to spin things in the most positive light they can especially now that they traded away so many young players.
11. It is a discussion board. Most are aware that we will get picks and replenish the system. Most people are really happy that the Brewers will be good next year. Neither are really topics that will create much discussion. I am not sure what you expect. Without a dissenting opinion there is no discussion. If you want a discussion about it look in the MLB draft forum. Most people are not informed enough(myself included) to discuss future draft picks.
12. I just disagree with portraying most Brewers fans as miserable. Our MiLB system is bad right now. How are we miserable because we are discussing it? We are all excited about 2011. Do we really need to discuss that?
13. Even if Cruz makes the team I don't think that would keep Gamel off the roster. Dickerson, Cruz, Counsell, and Gamel on the bench would probably be the way they go. Gamel covering all the corner positions.
14. Who's complaining? There are discussions about how we should improve SS and how bad our minor league system is. No real complaining but I don't listen to sports talk radio because most of it is garbage.
15. No, just last year. He was on the roster as a part time player in 2009. I think Gamel ends up on the bench as a backup in 2011. I don't see him getting any chance at the starting lineup in 2011 unless somebody gets injured.
16. I think peope are way to quick to make changes in the sports world. Outside of players, you really need 5 years to make any kind of determination on how good somebody is unless a guy is completely incompetent. Jack Z. is not.
17. In fact, it sounded like Escobar was repeating Chuckie Carr lines about being good enough the way he was and not needing to change his ways. I thought Escobar was working with Svuem towards the end of the season on his swing. I believe Gomez is the one you are thinking of.
18. Yes we let Inglett go. If Counsell was about 5 years or even 3 years younger I would feel a lot better about SS. I don't think Counsell can play more than 2 games a week, if that, and hold up for the whole season.
19. The crew pretty much thinks we should have focused on riskier pitching instead of hitting during our rebuilding.
20. Picking up a guy who is worth 2 wins now means he is only worth one win or less at the deadline. The longer we wait the less the upgrade helps.
21. If she has watched Titanic she is obviously wrong.
22. Blown saves don't mean the team lost.
23. I guess. I wouldn't think of one or two games as derailing the season even if we only miss the playoffs by a game or two. I think of derailing the season as only winning in the low 80's or a losing record. I don't think Betancourt, despite his suckitute, is capable of dragging us down that far unless he runs over Greinke, Gallardo, Fielder and Braun in the parking lot.
24.
Really? As currently constituted you think we have "little chance to make the playoffs"? I think at worst we are co-favorites for the division right now with the Reds. At worst. Oops, that should be 2012. I dont think we are favorites in our division. That still has to go to the Reds. They are young and could possibly get better with the same players. Of course all their players might have had their career year last year. We were really far behind the Reds last year and we really only added 2 players. 2 very good players replacing really bad players but still only 2 players.
25. A little more than a win. 24 runs spread out over 40 innings by the 5.40 ERA pitcher would still be a scoreless inning almost half the time. Those runs will probably be given up in bunches. The example you used was pretty drastic as well. We are probably not going to see a 5.40 ERA pitcher in a close game. Even a 4 ERA pitcher compared to a 2.8 ERA pitcher is only a 5 run difference.
