  1. I am actually more concerned with Bentacourt playing in the field than batting.
  2. I laugh when you say we are going to be bad for 5-7 years. It is entirely possible given the state of the farm system. Even with a good draft in 2011 those guys wouldn't be ready until most of our current MLB talent is gone. Even if we are contending in 2012 we might have to trade a guy like Grienke if we know we are going to lose him. As I see it we are making a run at 2011 and Doug knows he can restock what he got rid of in 2012 if he needs to. If we are contending you can't trade a guy like Greinke or Marcum.
  3. Crap, I forgot about the grit and scariness of Kendall. I guess Kendall is more of a MLB player than Bentacourt. Saw that as well. The JJ Hardy misconceptions still persist.
  4. A Weeks extension should be the first thing on the list. Without that our lineup takes a bid hit in 2012. After that extending one of Marcum and Greinke Makes things after 2012 look much better. Preferably both. Gamel should lessen the loss of Fielder. A Weeks and Marcum/Greinke extension should keep us competitive until we can develop some more prospects. We really need a good draft in 2011.
  5. Betancourt is a MLB SS like Kendall is a MLB catcher.
  6. This is a thread about getting a SS. That guy can barely play a passable 2B.
  7. An improvement over being bad the previous two years. Don't sugarcoat the numbers, he has been a below average defender and that has been backed up by other accounts.Betancourt lost weight before the 2009 season as well. Yup he still stunk.
  8. The only real problem now is if we somehow end up in limbo where we are close enough to look like we can contend but not really close enough to actually contend. There were some who wanted to add last year up until the deadline so we could contend. I think we will be in a contending position so flipping these guys at the deadline in either 2011 or 2012 is realistically out of the question. I think we are at worst in contender limbo.
  9. Macha had a tendency to bury guys for no apparent reason.
  10. This is the kind of thinking that lets guys like Corey Patterson hang around in the majors for a decade. Come to think of it Corey Patterson is a pretty good comparison for Gomez. The main difference being that Patterson actually posted a .320+ OBP by the age of 24. 1400 MLB PA without little sign of improvement is all I need to let me know Gomez is what he is. A really poor hitter with speed.
  11. You mean other than actually being able to get on base right?
  12. Boras works for Prince, not the other way around.and I think at this point we can be pretty sure Fielder has told Boras to get as much money as he can. Somebody is going to pay Fielder more than we are.
  13. It has to be. Melvin is not that stupid. Dayton Moore is hardly that stupid.I can't find the quote now but Moore at the time he traded for Betancourt talked about how he thought Betancourt was a good defender. Here are a link to a few Betancourt links. Betancourt is a bad bad player.
  14. Melvin said Yuniesky Betancourt, who came with Greinke in the trade, will be the starting shortstop and likes his offense and says his defense is underrated. "I think he's an exciting player who is still young," said Melvin. "He led their club in RBI. I think he will do OK in the field." Fire Doug Melvin.
  15. Before last season Parra had one good year and one bad year with a pretty good MiLB track record. It was reasonable to think Parra might be better than he was in 2009.
  16. He is a terrible defender and a terrible hitter. Gomez is a better hitter. Maybe he is a nice guy. I really don't like Luis Cruz and I didn't want to see him playing SS for us but now I do.
  17. Never had a problem with him. The future looks bad though unless we get a few extensions signed. Weeks and one of Marcum of Greinke.
  18. Sadly Gamel would probably be a better option at SS than Betancourt.
  19. Yeah but the 2 we are talking about replacing are already black holes at the plate.
  20. Best case scenario is that about 2/3 of balls are still hit into play. Betancourt at SS makes Weeks our best infield defender. Just something to think about. Even Fangraphs is pushing the old baseball "by the book" dreck.
  21. Why on earth would anybody want Gomez over Cameron? I am sorry but Gomez over Cameron at any price is crazy talk.
  22. Escobar is struggling in the winter league and wasn't as great defensively as advertised. Cain is gonna hurt partially because of who we have to replace him and partially because he is a guy who can both it and field which is something we lack. It's the winter leagues and Escobar improved dramatically over the course of the season on defense. I think Escobar will actually hurt more because of who we have to replace him. A Dickerson/Gomez platoon will at least bring good defense. Betancourt, well, he hits like Escobar and defends like Hanley Ramirez.
  23. See there is the problem. Gomez can't get on base.
  24. Betancourt isn't good, but he's no worse than Escobar. Yes he is. Escobar could at least play defense. Betancourt sure doesn't look very good, although he did hit 16 HRs last year. How is his defense? It sucks. I would actually rather see Gomez on the field rather than Betancourt. I would rather see Luis Cruz as SS than Betancourt and I like Cruz less than I ever liked Wes Helms.
