  1. Lee didn't really take much less to sign with the Phillies instead of the Yankees. 5/$120 or 7/$148. The Phillies actually offered more per year. If Lee gets that last year vested it becomes 6/$147. The Yankees got outbid. I was actually hoping the Yankees would sign Lee because I want the system to look as broken as it feels. If the Yankees signed every top FA every single year at some point somebody has to realize things are broken, right?
  2. Villanueva and Parra also looked like awesome starting pitchers in September callups. I wouldn't read to much into anything done in September.
  3. I think Gamel makes the team because he was very close last year. From a few Macha quotes it sounded like Gamel was going to make the team last year, I assume as a bench guy, until he got hurt. Cruz probably makes the team as well. I believe he is out of options.
  4. I figured you meant a month at least. I am not putting McGehee in the same class as Fielder but we have seen Fielder struggle for a month. All players struggle. McGehee struggled though June(.657OPS) and part of July(.716OPS) last year.
  5. Of course he improved after repeatng AAA a few times. Most players improve after repeating a level. You guys disagree with me. I am fine with that. I have heard about his changed stance. I never said McGehee would "fall off a cliff." You said that. I just said I think he has topped out his talent and Gamel has the potential to be better. I don't follow this logic. I have some sort of vandetta against McGehee but you think we should bench him if he struggles a bit? If you think it is so illogical that Gamel could be better than McGehee why would you bench McGehee just because he struggles? I am going to agree to disagree with you fellas. I think McGehee is a very popular player and I don't see the point in further discussion based on how my opinion has been recieved. I have obviously taken a very unpopular stance. I am ok with that but I don't think this discussion is productive.
  6. It really hasn't been 2 seasons. It is only a little over 1 and a half. I understand why nobody agrees with my opinion but like I said, McGehee was not much of a hitter in the minors and suddenly he hits way better. I don't expect it to continue. Halfway through 2011 I may change my mind.
  7. I think that is uncalled for. I am just basing my opinion on different assumptions and biases than you are. You are assuming McGehee will continue to hit as well as he has so far. I am not so certain he will. Gamel in 2009 had a .760ish OPS in sporadic at bats. I think given regular playing he will improve on that number pretty easily based on his minor league numbers. Given that neither is a good defender I don't think that really comes into play much. I also think Gamel's left handed bat would slot pretty nicely into the 2 hole given his decent OBP skills.
  8. He didn't play much in 2009.
  9. I didn't read it that way. And speaking of minutiae... For whatever it's worth, Drew Olson's comment about Betancourt on 540 ESPN this afternoon was along the lines of: "The people I talk to, who get paid to watch Royals games, say he's one of the worst players they've ever seen."
  10. I don't care if it is a slap in the face. We need to put the best player available on the field. His season last year wasn't really all that impressive and I think worst case scenario Gamel can match it with the potential to be much much better. I don't expect McGehee to hit much better than he did last year. The defense isn't likely to suffer much if at all since McGehee isn't much of a defender. I don't think it will happen but I think it should happen. I think Gamel ends up on the bench. I would advocate Luis Cruz at SS if I felt more comfortable with his defense. After McGehee and Escobar I really don't trust scouting of minor league defense. Luis Cruz is likely to be an even worse hitter than Betancourt.
  11. In my opinion what should be done is start Dickerson in CF giving Gomez a start or two a week and start Gamel at 3B making McGehee a bench player. I think Gamel will make the club. From the sound of it he would have made the club out of spring training last year if he had not been hurt.
  12. Since 2002 the NL Central winners have won 97, 88, 105, 100, 83, 85, 97, 91, and 91 games.(93 average) The Wild Card winners have won 95, 91, 92, 89, 88, 90, 90, 92, and 91 games.(90.9 average) If we are at 88 that probably puts in the thick of things and makes us the leaders if things break our way. I have mentioned it in a couple of the SS threads and others have touched on it in this thread but each win over 88 greatly improves our chances. I know there is a stigma about the low level of competition in the NL Central but the winners have still typically won at least 90 games.
  13. Contenders yes. Favorites, no.
  14. Betancourt put up the same WAR as Escobar did last year. We didn't get worse as SS than we were in 2010. Escobar got better on defense and will probably be better than Betancourt in 2011.
  15. In baseball you usually have at least 2-3 years of minor league statistics to look at. In football all you have is what a guy did in college against uneven competition.Which even more so strengthens my question. In the NFL one good season determines what kind of player you are. In MLB players have 3-4 minor leagues seasons and still one good season or two in the majors leaves questions.Usually because of their MiLB stats. If a player was good in the minors there is typically little question about them at the MLB level. In the case of McGehee he hit far and away better than he ever did in the minors. With a player like Braun the questions were whether he was going to be Pujols like or just merely very very good.
  16. I think it is important to keep in mind we have pushed ourselves into a position where each marginal win is pretty huge.
  17. I honestly don't have much problem with Milwaukee being nowhere on the jerseys. The Brewers are a state team
  18. It is depleted. We have Rogers as a possible good player and then a bunch of guys. Lots of pitching but mostly back end starters or relievers. We can talk about how our MLB team is set for a while but that doesn't make our minors better. It just means we don't need our minors to be good anytime soon.
  19. SS is a big hole and we have pushed our team to a point where a marginal win or two is pretty big.
  20. I don't think he can handle left, let alone center. He's always been a pretty terrible outfielder. I forget what a bad fielder Podsednik is... you would think with his speed he should be better, but he's not.You could say the same thing about Braun and Hart. Add in Podsednik just to claim you have the fastest outfield with the worst defense.

  22. That foosball stuff must really be a drain on baseball in the middle of the summer.
  23. Nobody is going to throw Gomez good pitches no matter where he hits because he will swing at bad pitches. Then again, he really hit a lot better last year in the 2 hole.
