  1. and the only thing most fans know about Mat Gamel is that he struck out a lot when he was in the majors last year.
  2. That should have been an error. Wainwright tried to scoop it to Molina and whiffed.
  3. The Braves have a paid attendance of under 17,000 last night (looking on TV, actual attendance was well under 10,000). The weather in Atlanta sucked last night. They were getting the weather similar to what we had last week.
  4. I wasn't referring to two months off like Salome, I was referring to two years off. And I wasn't referring to not playing baseball ever again, I was referring to taking 2-3 years off and then resuming playing when the diabetes was under control. If he takes 2 years off at this point or at any point going forward I would have to think his return would be very unlikely.
  5. Last year talking to a couple that hosted some of the players. Those players didn't like him much. I believe the exact quote as near as I can remember was along the lines of "he lacked social graces." Comments earlier this year about how it will be nice to play with guys who care more about winning than their stats. Comments about how Brewers fans might not like him because he wasn't a blue collar type of guy. I would normally just ignore this kind of stuff but it kept coming up from several different sources. I think if you go back and look at a Lawrie thread in the MiLB forum you will probably see more.
  6. While he has a scholarship offer from USD, if something goes wrong he can take a leave of absence from baseball (or not play for a while) easier than if he was in the pros. I think you are wrong on this point. Look at the Salome situation this past summer. The Brewers can be very accommodating. Besides, that $2m was a signing bonus and he could tell the Brewers to pound sand if he didn't want to play baseball anymore.
  7. Also, one other point to raise. I assume Covey is getting a full ride scholarship at San Diego. Yes, guaranteed money is one thing. But if he applies himself academically and graduates with a useful degree, he'll probably have connections to land a great job. Chances are he'll be able to earn much more than the $2 million he would have gotten from the Brewers; even without pitching a single inning of professional baseball. I think that makes his decision look a lot less "idiotic." I believe that players that turn down scholarships to sign generally have clauses written into their contracts that the signing team will pay for their college if they decide baseball isn't working out. Plus, how can you not pay for 4 years of college if you get $2M.
  8. I would 100% have advised my son to take the money. He would have 6 months with nothing else to do except get ready. There is a strong possibility the Brewers would have helped Covey with adjusting. Learn to adjust on the Brewers dime. They might have even paid for a nutritionist to help Covey. I will say I think he made a comfortable choice not the right choice. He could always go back to college, again, on the Brewers dime.
  9. He has to be ready for school in about a month(give or take) and he could stay home and get ready for just baseball in about 6 months. I doubt he makes a 2 hour commute each day to school.
  10. I am not sure how he thinks getting used to it in college would be any easier. How much would he have really played this year anyway? My guess is that this late in the season he would not have pitched at all. Anyway, this is a huge shock.
  11. If there was a reasonable replacement for Parra I would be more in favor of taking him out. He has gotten the plethora of opportunities mostly because our other options are probably worse in my opinion. Also, why burn service time in a lost season?
  12. he last couple seasons Braun was highly regarded in LF on this board Only by a very small group of people. The general consensus seems to be he has the tools to be a good outfielder but he stinks. the same was true with Hart- around the same time period that he was an above average OFer, with above average speed and above average arm that didn't make a lot of mistakes. that he was totally solid. Maybe three years ago. Not over the last 2 years. hart has been considered pretty poor for a while now. Now, most of what i read on this board is how Gomez sucks, in general- few heralding his defensive abilities, and that Braun and Hart are horrible OFers. Not sure where you get the Gomez sucks stuff from. His offense yeah but only a handful of people have been critical of his defense. The second part you are right about. Braun and Hart are below average. is this because we have more data to see their weaknesses, or have they really started sucking more? In Hart's case he seems to have gotten much worse since his first year and a half. Braun pretty much has always sucked in the field. We have enough data that we can be reasonably sure the data is correct on those 2 and Hart is a little below average while Braun is worse. Both seem to be regressing and not towards the mean.
  13. That is not what I meant by unprotected. It means that if they don't sign Covey this year and also fail to sign their pick next year they don't get another one the year after. Teams with unprotected picks seem to pick safe slot guys because they don't want to risk not signing them. Even in a deep draft there is not going to be any safe slot guys with close to Covey's talent level. If that really is a concern, which I don' think it is, you use the pick on a college senior.
  14. Lawrie is our biggest offensive upside prospect right now, or at least the closest to the majors. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see him traded though. There are still rumors about poor work ethic and not being liked by his teammates following him around.
  15. They would only lose a pick if they sign a type "A" free agent. I seriously doubt they will be signing any type "A" free agents.
  16. Like others have mentioned though, it isn't just one mistake now and then. It is constant mistakes that looks like a lack of effort.
  17. Golf isn't exactly cheap. $20 to walk 9 or $45 for 18/w cart last time I played and that doesn't include anything from the drink cart or buying a new box of balls cause you suck at it so bad.(a few years back and those were not even the really nice courses) I think people are finding they need that money for other things lately is my guess. I loved to golf but you don't exactly get a lot of bang for your buck. ticky tack stuff is not going to make the game appeal to regular Joes, to be certain. Anything that you do to change the lie of your ball after you put in play off the tee is a penalty except relief form certain obstacles. The rules, stupid or not, are the rules. If you don't like it, don't play by the rules. I doubt most people would mind as long as you follow some etiquette(not walking across a putting line, talking during somebody's back swing, replace your divots, etc.) unless you are playing for money. Heck, golf played by the rules isn't much fun unless you get pretty good at it.
  18. Kind of makes you wonder how closely he is actually watching the games.
  19. Well if you just want to go with career OPS+ I am not shocked but a little disappointed nobody brought up one of our own. Hank Aaron. Rank Player (age) Adjusted OPS+Bats 1.Babe Ruth+ 207L 2.Ted Williams+ 190L 3.Barry Bonds 181L 4.Lou Gehrig+ 179L 5.Rogers Hornsby+ 175R 6.Mickey Mantle+ 172B 7.Albert Pujols (30)171R 8.Dan Brouthers+ 170L Shoeless Joe Jackson 170L 10.Ty Cobb+ 168L 11.Jimmie Foxx+ 163R 12.Pete Browning 162R Mark McGwire 162R Dave Orr 162R 15.Stan Musial+ 159L 16.Hank Greenberg+ 158R 17.Johnny Mize+ 157L Tris Speaker+ 157L 19.Dick Allen 156R Frank Thomas 156R 21.Hank Aaron+ 155R Joe DiMaggio+ 155R Willie Mays+ 155R Mel Ott+ 155L Manny Ramirez (38)155R
  20. But to go back retroactively and assess a penalty based on TV replays is bush league. Stuff like that happens in golf. Fans can call in if they see a rule violation.
  21. The Brewers still do have some flexibility with Gamel, Lawrie, and Green in the minors to replace McGehee at 3B. I should have been more specific but that is what I mean by replaceable and I should have added with similar expected production. Hart, Braun and Gallardo would be bigger trading chips than McGehee but I don't see them going anywhere. Weeks could be a big trading piece but unless he turns down an extension I doubt we move him. Add in that the only real replacement of quality we have for Weeks is Lawrie and he isn't as replaceable as McGehee. Plus he is a much better hitter than McGehee. McGehee isn't young but he will be under team control through his most productive years.(he will turn 32 in his first FA offseason)
  22. I ran across this while poking around the internet today. It shows bullpen usage for the last week for each team. I was looking for the thread TLB started a while back but couldn't find it.
  23. I believe the phrase is draw a bead or in this case had a bead on the ball. Maybe it is just another typo, rather than the wrong word. These two-other sentences also appear in the game article (not just the blog): "Troy Tulowitzki watches his three-run hone run that was just out of the reach of Ryan Braun in the eighth inning Friday." "“He’s out best pitcher,” Macha said." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif Maybe but I doubt it. m and n are next to each other on the computer as are t and r. Same finger to type I believe. d and t not so much. Then again, maybe Macha actually called Gallardo "out best pitcher" just to make Witrado look a little foolish.
  24. What makes McGehee our 2nd biggest trading chip is that he is replaceable not his value to the team.
