  1. I think I would lean more towards signing Fielder if he was playing average defense at a more premium defensive position. The fact that he plays about average defense at the least valuable defensive position on the team, I lean more towards letting him walk. Fielder is one of the best hitting 1B in the game. However, an average NL 1B put up a line of .282/.373/.485 last year so it isn't like having only an average 1B would be terrible.
  2. St. Louis is a pretty small market. Much larger than Milwaukee, bu still pretty small.
  3. He's bad. Well below average. I don't think he is the worst in the league though. He has great athletic gifts. I don't think he has good baseball instincts though. I still think he can improve to at least average.
  4. I wouldn't extend Gallardo at this point either. Around his first year of arbitration I would seriously consider it.
  5. I wouldn't want to extend Fielder unless it is for a hometown discount. I don't think it is a good idea to pay market value for elite players. It makes our team much riskier. I would rather have more positions filled with slightly above average players rather than a bunch of below average guys with one elite guy. If that one guy has a below average year or injury it drastically hurts your team while spreading your money over several guys means several guys would have to have bad years or injuries for your team to have a bad year. Yes money is coming off from Suppan and Hall after this year, but wouldn't we be better off trying to extend Gallardo instead. I would think we are likely to get a better deal than we would from Fielder. Fielder is a 1B which is probably the easiest position to replace at least some of that production. Odd that a lot of the discussion about Fielder after last season was about how he had gained weight and his production was somewhat disappointing.
  6. Where is the best place to look up park factors? I ask because ESPN's for Miller Park seem to be all over the place. Neutral 3 years ago and a pitchers park the last couple years.
  7. That's good to hear. I have argued against putting him on the 40-man roster just to protect him from another positive test but I really hope he succeeds at baseball with the Brewers.
  8. I think the thought of parting with Solome has more to do with wanting to acquire SP, our sucky MLB catchers overt the last decade(?) or so and having another solid minor league prospect more than anything to do with any indictment of Solome. The only thing it says to me is that people think Lucroy is a safer prospect than Solome, not a better one. Solome seems to have a much higher upside with a much lower downside. Lucroy seems to look like a slighty below average player at worst with a smaller upside.
  9. hopefully stays clean at least until he reaches the majors. or at the very least until he is added to the 40-man roster. My hope is that for his own well being he would stay clean for the rest of his life. I wouldn't count on it though. I am not one of the people that thinks marajuana will ruin a person's life. Timing is everything. If he had run into this problem of getting caught, say when he won an Cy Young award, no big deal.
  10. Hanley plays SS. The offensive requirements for a SS are massively smaller than for a 1B. 120+ points of OPS difference. If they are even close on offense, Hanley should easily get the nod over Fielder.
  11. Seems like a team that could get things together by the end of the season and make a good run in the WCHA and national tourneys. Yeah the Badgers have talent year after year, but we also have many players leave after only a couple years. The only real loss from last year was McBain. Big loss, but looks like we have good replacements for him. I don't think we have a good goalie. Our system seems to lessen the impact of goalies though.
  12. My guess is Solome's possible downside if he doesn't stick at catcher. Still seems like quite a fall just because of one injury plagued season.
  13. I am sitting here drinking a 2° Below Ale for New Belgium. I think it is pretty good. I also liked their Hoptober. A month or so back my wife had the Arcadia Ales Jaw-Jacker Ale. Not a pumpkin ale despite what the packaging would lead you to believe.
  14. I think part of the Yankess deal with the city included not having to pay taxes on the property for the stadium. That was included at one point. I am not sure if it was in the final deal.
  15. For the MLB network to truly be beneficial to the teams the blackout rules would have to go away. I for one would pony up the money is the blackout restrictions were removed. It is really easier to watch the Brewers games live out of market than in market.
  16. Doesn't sound like he was picked up for anything more than depth. Also doesn't sound like Solome or Lucroy would be more than backups if they were at the MLB level in 2010.
  17. Counsell's OBP heavy OPS would be worth more than Cintron's SLG heavy OPS even though Cintron's OPS is higher.
  18. Wilson is a below average hitter, even for a SS. We do have a Jack Wilson on our team. We just call him Alcides Escobar.
  19. It isn't that Kendell played well enough or well at all. It is that the alternatives are weak as well.
  20. Considering the projections for Lucroy/Solome are for them to still be below average, I think a win is much more accurate than 2. Taking into account that rookie catchers have a hard time, I still think the difference between Kendall and one of Solome/Lucroy is still pretty small. Lucroy is going to be 24 next year, he's not exactly young. No he isn't. Players start to decline in their early 30's so we would get him for all of his peak years. His peak years are worth more than his current years.
  21. You're going to have a lot of trouble convincing people that Salome and Lucroy couldn't do better than the .636 OPS and .290 wOBA that Kendall put up. I would never go to the trouble of trying to convince anybody of anything here. I know better. All I would ever do is present an opposing viewpoint and hope it gets people to think. Kendall is projected here to OPS .626 leading to a contribution of -25 runs, almost 2 wins worse than either Lucroy or Salome. Like I said before, I don't put any stock in the R/150 portion of those projections. 2 wins seems excessive. I just get the feeling that people are stuck in a "Kendall sucks, anybody would be better" mindset. I wouldn't argue against the first part, but am a little skeptical of the second part. Many people seem willing to believe every bad thing about Kendall and positive thing about the alternatives. I think we also need to consider what this team is shooting for next year. At this point we are probably looking at a low 80 win total. Even if we believe one of Lucroy/Solome would actually be 2 wins better than Kendall, I don't think it is worth using a year of service time just to get us to 85 instead of 83. I say sign Kendall to $1-2M for one year and worst case scenario, we cut him a month or 2 in and bring up one of the kids. Buys an extra year and has minimal impact on our overall win total.
  22. Weeks should be ready to go by the start of the season. At worst he will miss one game a series. That is what happened last time he had this injury on his other wrist. It took a year to completely heal, but he played most of the games until it did. Seems like a bad idea to waste Gamel's service time to only have him play 2-3 games a week. If he isn't going to be starting 150+ games a year, he should be in AAA. Leaving him in AAA until the trading deadline should be about long enough to gain another year of service time. Doing that would seem rather odd though. Did I miss something? Where was it stated that Lopez is gone? While I agree he is unlikely to return, it isn't out of the question that we could offer arbitration and have him accept.
  23. Solome/Lucroy are not expected to hit much better than Kendall though. If Kendall comes back at $1-2M then that is probably a better option than using up a year of service time with Solome/Lucroy. Neither of those 2 guys were exactly exceptional last year where they need to be moved to the majors.
  24. Still have not gotten around to playing DA much. At this rate I might not be ready to play Mass Effect 2 when it comes out. Borderlands is releasing DLC on November 24th that is supposed to add 6-10 hours of gameplay for $10. My fastest time through the main story in Borderlands was 13 hours(I think) so that seems like a really good value.
  25. The only thing I would give LaRussa credit for is recognizing the whether he would be able to win games with a team. Whether he is a good manager is a distant second to actually putting good players on the field.
