    I give up. Bat Escobar 1st and Gomez 2nd. It will be great fun to see Braun come up so often with 2 outs and nobody on. Forgot about the pitcher batting ahead of those 2. Braun would hardly ever see guys on base.

    Parra did pitch 166 innings with a 4.39 ERA in 2008. Just saying, he isn't as bad as he is often made out to be. One bad year and suddenly there is no confidence in him to be anything other than a 5th starter seems pretty silly to me. Yeah he hit a wall at the end of 2008 and pitched poorly. Not a surprise given his inning increase for the year.

    I would guess that their payroll is likely to be $90M minus the $7.1M for Hall and $2M for in season call-ups. So somewhere around $80M to spend right now. I think we are right up against that now. We will not know for sure until after arbitration cases are settled, but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign another free agent.

    Bat Gomez at eighth or ninth until he proves he can put up a decent OBP. Why does Gomez have to prove himself but Escobar doesn't?

    The contract may be nice. I would hate for Counsell to actually get more than 400 PA in 2010 though.

    With their power, they would probably have to be in the .350+ OBP range to be in the top 5 hitters on the team. Your top 5 hitters should be in the top 5 spots of the order.

    I think the deal makes a lot of sense for the Mariners. They were at 85 wins last year and are trying to improve their team for this year. It is more important to try for those wins after 85 than it would be if they were around 75. The closer you can get to 90, the better chance you have of getting into the playoffs. Of course they WAY outperformed their Pythagorean record so maybe they aren't really a 85 win team. I that case it would depend on what they gave up. According to Dave Cameron, not much. He makes it sound like they will probably get better players out of the draft picks for Lee than the players they gave up.

    I don't remember anybody calling Gomez a bust. Several called him a really crappy hitter and great defender, which to this point he is, and thought we wasted our biggest trading chip on a position we could have just as easily filled from within instead of trading for our real need, pitching. I think Gomez is a better defender than Cameron and a much worse hitter even in optimistic projections.

    I would take out Wolf or Zaun/Hawkins/Counsell/Vargas or Hoffman/Vargas. Any of the 3 I would be willing to do. I really don't much care for anything Melvin has done so far this offseason except maybe the signing of Counsell and Zaun. I would give up either for Cameron any day.

    Now if Jack Z could somehow play Griffey less and get a real DH....

    I think all those projections are at least a little optimistic other than Parra. I would have put all of them at least 0.25 higher except maybe Parra. Yeah the 107 innings for Bush also seems really low.

    Well, that takes my hate of Helms down from a 90 on a 100 scale to about a 70. Deserved or not, I don't like the guy. I hear he is very likeable in person though.

    I have a mid eighties Tyco race track from my youth and was hoping for some tips on making it run better. 1/64th or HO scale. Also any tips on where to pick up some replacement parts for the cars other than E-Bay would be great. I think they were Tyco 440-X2 cars.

    Villanueva as a reliever had more blown saves (5) than saves (3 - two of which were against Pittsburgh) Blown saves are only relevant for players who are closers all year. You are likely to see the same thing from almost any reliever. Every reliever is put in a situation to blow a save whenever they are put in a game with a 3 run or less lead with no chance to actually get a save.

    3 points on the road at ND is fantastic. Wish I could see more games though. I think I have only watched one or 2 so far. Two wins on the road the previous weekend isn't bad either. Don't care if Michigan Tech has a bad team. Road sweeps in the WCHA are all good. That makes 7 points over the last 2 weeks.

    Yup, Hall counts. Link but hey, we only have $7M committed in 2011 I am sure he meant before Hawkins and Wolf were signed. While technically he is correct, I doubt they nontender almost the whole team including Fielder.

    Yeah I guess that is news, but other than Gerut none should really be surprising. Even Gerut isn't all that surprising. We still need Bush. Even if he makes $6M we are not likely to get a guy who can put up an ERA in the 4.5 range cheaper unless that guy also has serious injury questions. Villanueva shouldn't be all that expensive in his first year of arbitration. He can provide solid innings out of the pen. Sure he has a blow up once in a while. All but the best do. Gerut can play all 3 spots in the outfield. Left handed bat. He has played in the majors and complements our mostly righthanded OFers well.
