  1. Not wasting money on signing any of the very underwhelming free agent starting pitchers would be great. Sure you could get a guy or 2 for that money, but they are likely to be pretty similar to Looper or slightly better. In short, not much better than what we have. The best way to go would be to trade for a couple AAA guys.
  2. The only thing I though was funny was Toby "So Oscar says I mentally checked out in June... Huh."
  3. UZR not ZR is what I would look at to start with. Hardy has enough innings to make UZR very useful and it shows him to be one of the top SS in the league. Escobar has the tools to be a very good SS. His inconsistency right now makes Hardy better. Melvin/Ash say Escobar makes spectacular plays and will be a great defensive SS in the future. They don't say he is currently a great defensive SS.
  4. How is measuring outs within a zone subjective? He converts balls into outs at a rate higher than most SS. It isn't my opinion. It is measured. I will certainly go with something measured objectively than the observations of any one person. There are faults with defensive metrics, but to just out ans out dismiss them seems like an overreaction.
  5. Sheets has never had a shortstop like Alcides and one need look no further than the Texas Rangers and their pitching resurgence from another slick-fielding rookie (Elvis Andrus). Hardy is one of the best defensive SS in all of baseball. Escobar right now is probably about average with the talent to be as good as JJ in the future. He isn't as good defensively as JJ yet and probably will not be in 2010.
  6. I didn't like it. I really have not liked the show for a couple years now though. It seems like the show is less like a mocumentary than in the past. It is just another sitcom.
  7. Considering all our other options and the catchers likely to be on the free agent market, I have to think that if Solome had a good year in 2009 he would have been almost a shoe-in to be Milwaukee's starting catcher in 2010.
  8. I was going to wait until the Astros actually signed Garner but yeah, if they are not the absolute worst run team in all of MLB they are right up there. They traded some good prospects at the deadline last year when they were in a similar to the Brewers this year. The "go for it" mentality is good from a fan standpoint, but is really dumb from a management standpoint when you trade prospects for MLB talent when you have no realistic shot at the playoffs. Oh yeah, and how's that Carlos Lee deal working out. It isn't like they haven't spent money. I am shocked Cooper lasted as long as he did.
  9. Losing Cameron would be a huge hit to our team. I am not worried about losing out on pitching if we sign him though. The FA pitchers are pretty dismal and likely to cost more than they are worth. I think our best bet is to try and get a couple pitchers back in trade and hope some of our prospects are close to being ready next year. Hardy probably brings back a AAA guy since most teams trading for him will think they have a shot at winning next year and won't want to give up a guy they think they need. Escobar would probably bring back the best pitcher for next year.
  10. Kendall is bad, but the rest of the FA catchers don't exactly look great either. It may be harder to upgrade than people think. .330 OBP is about average for a catcher. Link I see little reason to keep Lopez unless Weeks doesn't come back or he is moved to the outfield. Neither option is appealing in my opinion. Lopez had a career year this year and I don't think he will be this good again. I think he will get a longer contract from somebody else. We have McGehee or Gamel for 3B. Why add to that logjam?
  11. Even assuming you have all the guys right for next year, Escobar is probably the 6th best hitter in that lineup. Even against LHP.
  12. You mean to say that A-Rod just happened to have a few bad series during the playoffs? No way. That would never happen to a great player. Maybe they just needed somebody to take the all the pressure off of A-Rod. Good thing they got Teixeira or A-Rod would still suck.
  13. Interesting that the Twins who "play the game the right way" are 3rd from the bottom in UZR this year and worst in UZR/150. About the middle of the league in SB also. I bet the lead in grittiness though.
  14. They probably should have said that Escobar made some great plays, but was inconsistent.
  15. Escobar lived up to his reputation as a sometimes sensational defender in the field but also confirmed the scouting report that he sometimes makes careless mistakes. Sounds like average defense to go along with average offense for a SS. B+ for Escobar. He out hit JJ for only a little bit and played much worse defense than JJ. D for JJ. The only reason Escobar got a slightly higher grade from me is because JJ fell way short of expectations and Escobar exceeded expectations.
  16. I guess every team makes bone head plays if you watch them often enough.
  17. They don't though. The manager will typically have one or two guys who get little or no work.
  18. His speed would also make it harder to double him up However his high contact rate along with a GB tendency make it more likely he hits into double plays. He was 2nd in GIDP in Nashville this year with 13.
  19. Provided he isn't the long man/garbage inning guy, I agree. The 7th best guy in the pen doesn't get many/meaningful innings. If something happens he can easily be brought up from AAA. If he isn't one of the top 5 guys, send him to AAA to keep pitching.
  20. Sorry about that. I fixed the link. Here it is again, just in case.
  21. Keeping a guy stretched out in AAA would be more useful than using him as one of the long guys out of the pen.
  22. It would be easier to cheer for LA if Witrado wasn't a Dodgers fan.
  23. Also couldn't understand being so harsh on Bush. The guy had a bad year, but he was hurt. I'd rather take my shot with a cheaper, better, healthy Bush than Looper. At least Bush was adequate late last year and early this year before he got hurt. He's also the only NL Central pitcher to win a playoff game since 2006 (ok, maybe that last part should be blueish). I can't speak for anybody else, but my grades don't reflect anything other than results from 2009 and a little weight based on expectations. Not how I think they will do next year, not how they did last year.
  24. Not Escobar. Unless Kendall comes back Escobar is likely the worst hitter in our lineup.
  25. Top offensive player who plays excellent defense would be an A+. Fielder, while being a top offensive player, is only average at defense. Braun has bad defense. While Braun and Fielder have excellent bats, they also play at positions where the bar is higher on offense.
