  1. Like I said, I'm in a foul mood today regarding the Brewers. Until yesterday the offense had done pretty well during the homestand. But by and large it's been a quarter of a season of a general team wide pathetic approach at the plate.
  2. So Berkman is like Kevin Millar, except he can actually play?
  3. I agree about Peavy. But he is pitching well, although he has a huge home/road split.
  4. The Red Sox have 6 left handed hitters on their roster and two switch hitters. This is probably what drove ZachJack call up. While Zach didn't pitch well as a starter this year, it's probably silly to write him off so early in the season.
  5. I've been more positive in the last week, but I'm in a foul mood after the last two games. This is a team that can't seem to keep their cool after a tough loss. Suppan and Bush could get killed in Fenway. That could turn the offense quickly into a bunch of mopey, hang your head, swing at every high outside pitch, types. They're gonna get swept at Boston, win one in Pittsburgh, and make the Nats rotation look like 5 Brandon Webbs. I really, really hope I'm wrong, but 2-8 seems about par. Yost will be fired after the plane ride home on the 26th.
  6. I like it just fine. I think it's cool the Orioles are coming to Milwaukee. At this point they'll probably sweep the Brewers. I like that the Brewers are playing in Fenway this weekend. It gives a chance for a tiny market team to get some big market East Coast exposure. Even if the Red Sox do sweep them. The only issue I have is when contending teams in a division don't play the same caliber of teams in interleague. The Cubs, who already seem to have the easiest schedule in baseball this Spring, are playing the Pirates at home this weekend. While the Brewers are in Fenway. And the Cubs never play the Red Sox this year. As for the DH, I think it's important to consider the NL effectively uses the DH most games after the 6th inning. They just call it "Pinch Hitter" over here. To paraphrase Sparky Anderson, it's not like the double switch is rocket science anyway.
  7. Santana didn't pitch a full season as a starter until his age 25 season. He's racking up wins fast since then, averaging 17.5 in his 4 full seasons as a starter. Cy Young will probably come down to Webb, Peavy, and Santana. Webb is the only one who doesn't enjoy a pitcher friendly home field.
  8. Is he really almost 32 and never been to the majors? His numbers have been pretty solid at every level.....His K:BB ratio is better than 4:1! Are the stats I'm looking at wrong?
  9. posted on here said it best: "swings a wet newspaper for a bat" I am so ready for this experiment to be over. Really? Replacing the starter in the 7th when suddenly every hitter is slamming the ball is stupid? Brewers could use more stupid...
  10. leaving him in after 2 homers and a triple in the first 4 batters is stupid.
  11. It's an easy stat to criticize, and not without merit.. 6ip, 3er or less. Still it's true, pitchers who consistently pitch to this minimum standard are giving their teams are good chance to win a lot of games. When the entire rotation does it consistently you have a winning team with a legitimate playoff chance. For the first time this year, the Brewers just went through the rotation with every one of the 5 starters throwing a quality start. In fact the starters bested the minimum quality start specifics, with a 2.20 ERA and just under 6-2/3 inning average over the last 5 games. As painful as the 9th was last night, teams who carry a 5-3 lead in the 9th win 80% of the time, at least. The Brewers are still not overpowering anyone, but the starters were quite impressive the last 5 games. For me this is the clearest sign things may have finally turned around.
  12. When closer pitch like Gagne has been, I kept help thinking anyone else would do better. Why do we just assume nowadays that whoever pitched the 8th inning would be so gassed that he couldn't pitch the 9th either? Isn't it more likely for an average pitcher to throw a 3 up/3 down inning than struggle with control, walk a couple batters and try and pitch out of jam, as Gagne has done 16 of 19 outings so far this year?
  13. Too bad he didn't have the surgery in March. Now it's questionable if he'll be ready by late summer 2009. I wonder if this was part of his problems last year....
  14. Well, it wasn't his fault last night that Rickie screwed up the chance for a double play. Still, until he stop walking or giving up a hit to the first batter, I'm going to assume nothing has changed, and continue to be sceered as helc everytime he takes the mound.
  15. Yet the Brewers have taken 4 of 6 from the Cubs all on the road. So, I think the Brewers have at least shown they can compete with the Cubs. The Cubs are going to hit a rough stretch at some point this season. They actually just went through a stretch where the went 4-8 over 12 games. before this recent 4 game winning streak. The Cubs have had winning streaks of 4,5, and 6 games this year already. So, they are a streaky team and that could catch up with them over a long season. Not saying it will but to at like the Cubs have been consistent isnt true. They have been all over the place. At the risk of sounding wishy washy, let me say I agree with you! It's somewhat remarkable the Brewers are .500 playing the schedule they have, and given the rotation and offense has not been up to even league average. Since last summer I've felt the Brewers were the better team, but they have yet to show it. The Cubs are still the team to beat until the Crew or some other team proves different. We all know Braun and Fielder are capable of carrying this team through a 10 game win streak, or something like a 15 out 20 run. Unfortunately it hasn't happened yet this year. Then again, maybe Braun is starting something magical this week.
  16. Well two things good teams have to do is beat up on weaker teams and win at home. The Cubs schedule may have been more favorable this Spring, but to their credit they've come through winning the games they should. Sweeping Arizona is also particularly impressive. They are playing as well as any team in baseball. Given the way the Brewers have been playing, I'm not sure they'd have the Cubs' record if they were playing that schedule.
  17. The Cardinals are 12-13 last 25 games. Brewers 11-14. Cubs 16-9. Astros 17-8. Pirates 11-14. Reds 10-15. The Astros offense is entirely Bergman, Lee, and Tejada. Pence's rate stats are about average; everyone else is pretty terrible. Among starters, Chacon seems to be doing best, though Oswalt is pitching better. (imho, he's a better pitcher than Zambrano or Sheets.) The Cubs have played 14 of those 25 games against the worst teams in the league: San Diego, Cincy, Nats, Pirates, Rockies, who combined have a winning pct of .411. They've gone 9-5 against them. In this same span they lost 2 of 3 to both the Cardinals and Brewers, but swept the Mets in a 2 game series, and took 3 from the DBacks over this past weekend. 13 of the 25 games were in Wrigley where they went 10-3. The Astros have also enjoyed playing games against the Padres, Nats, Giants, and Cincy in the 25 games. They went 8-3 against these teams. Houston had 11 home games in their last 25. Every team the Brewers have played in their last 25 games has a winning record except Cincy. Houston was 14-16 entering their 3 game series against the Brewers and finished it 16-16. The Brewers only played 11 home games over this stretch. Clearly the Brewers could be playing better this Spring. But just as clear, they've been playing a tougher schedule, at least the last 25 games.
  18. That's what Bush and CV both did their last starts. Ned wised up for Parra's start and yanked him after 5. I don't want to wear out the bullpen but I think that's going to have to be the strategy for awhile....yank these guys at the first sign of trouble from the 5th on.
  19. I think the best way to win a game is to have your best available pitcher in the game during the most critical point. It may be the 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th.
  20. Nelson is smacking the ball around, ain't he? But where does he play? No advantage to him at 1B, and Braun doesn't show much platoon differential....
  21. Hardy has been hitting for a higher average against righties this year. He's raised his average almost 30 points in the last 10 games. I don't want to sit him down right now. The players who've shown little against lefties righties (edit) are Hall, Weeks-who hasn't hit against anybody, and Cameron-who's not hitting and has only faced one or two lefties. So it might be worth a shot to play a few games with Gwynn in CF, Counsell at 2B, and Branyan at 3rd. But they're down to 12 pitchers so who do you send down? We're into the back of the rotation now, where no one can get through the 5th. Without a Designated Closer the relievers can expect unpredictable work. I can't imagine Ned going with 11 pitchers right now....
  22. Simmons will probably get the job, but this is why I generally oppose mid season firings. It essentially throws the season out the window. Even if the Brewers are as many as 10 games under .500 in mid June are you really ready to concede the last 100 games?
  23. I know, I know. It's a long season and you can't play every game like it's the playoffs. It's a tough balancing act to be sure. But notice Florida lifted their guy last night at the first sign of trouble in the 6th. Obviously you can't do that every night. But I think you do see other managers who are better at deciding which games to "go for it" and which ones to just let play out however it happens. Piniella and Bob Melvin come to mind here.
