  1. They have to win a game first.
  2. If this were true then pitchers would have the highest OBP in the majors. If a batter never swings in the majors they will soon be striking out every appearance. It won't take long to figure out the guy won't swing at strikes. That's why even when pitchers bat they will swing at pitches.
  3. I'm sure Cesar Izturis will be available at some point, either this season or next Spring. I don't think it matters much they lost Cruz. Besides, if he doesn't sing on with anyone else can't he just come back to the organization, tail between his legs, hat in hand?
  4. I always suspected the Escobar hype was precisely to increase his trade value, since JJ looked to be a special player that you'd want to keep long term. After two bad seasons though, Hardy was suddenly expensive and Doug had to flip flop his strategy.
  5. I'm convinced Kendall had incriminating photos of Brewer management. I don't believe Reed or Almonte will be with the team all season. There will be players available from other teams throughout the year. If the Brewers are competitive, expect Doug to make moves.
  6. Why bat Rickie 5th? Isn't he going to be a better 3 hitter with his speed and obp? Depending on who replaces Prince in 2011, it seems logical for Rickie to 3rd and Braun 4th.
  7. I'm thinking Hanley Ramirez, who jumps to $15 million in 2012, and signed through 2014. The Marlins won't want to pay him $41 million over his last 3 seasons will they?
  8. I'll take that situation over Ned's refusal to pinch hit for Kendall, ever.
  9. I expect a winning season, and if everything goes right, domination of the division. Seldom does everything go right, but a healthy rotation can take this club a long way.
  10. If the Brewers' jerseys said "Red Sox" across the front, yet had the same players, Gammons' story would be 3 scouts told him they were the best team in baseball. I do worry about Greinke. How can he only miss 3 starts when he hasn't even thrown a pitch in a game since the injury? Methinks he's out for all of April and maybe into May.
  11. As a starter (28 games), Narveson had a 4.85 ERA. Not too impressive. He did average 5-2/3rds ip per start, which is OK for a back of the rotation guy. But the encouraging part is his K rate and K:BB ratio. He averaged 7.5 Ks per 9ip and a 2.5:1 K:BB ratio. I'm not a NarvDog cheerleader, but those last two rates are encouraging. It's worth giving him another shot in the rotation, especially considering he was pretty awful out of the pen. If he can minimize the damage from righty bats he could be very good.
  12. Kotsay has a .319 obp/.377 slug pct/ .696 OPS over his last 1745 plate appearances. He's not going to improve on that. He can't play defense and he doesn't hit for power-I think you need one or the other of those talents for a bench player. He was a nice player in Oakland, but he's been terrible since he hit the wrong side of 30.
  13. Jeremy Bonderman still hasn't signed with any team? Good Lord, I'd offer him an invite immediately.
  14. I want to believe all of these guys would be playing through these "injuries" if it was the regular season. Does that make me stupid?
  15. His obp seems to run about 50 points higher than his batting avg. So, .260/.310/.390, which is acceptable when you factor in defense.
  16. This is the right move. Rogers has a long and scary injury history. He has played in exactly one AAA game in his career. He needs to spend some time there, and show he is effective and healthy.
  17. Also, wasn't it Mike Mussina that broke his hand punching a wall after a bad inning? I think that was Kevin Brown. I can't imagine Mussina ever being the emotional or upset.
  18. The Mariners were last in the league in runs scored in 2009. The run differential indicated they "should" have finished 10 games worse than they did. They were incredibly lucky in 2009. In 2010 they finished right about where their stats took them. Jack Z made a huge mistake thinking 2009 was a true representation of the team. In the end it will probably cost him his job. The comparison to the Brewers doesn't hold up at any level.
  19. Again this year, if you live in the Brewers' market area, the tape delay games on MLBN are blacked out. Totally ridiculous.
  20. When the Orioles hired him a couple years ago they sung his praises in the same way the Brewers did with Peterson. He'd probably still be there if it weren't for Showalter wanting his own guy. Both Kranitz and Peterson seem well respected in the industry, so I doubt the change will have much effect. The pitching staff will be better because the pitchers are better.
  21. I don't know the right statistical model to build, but someone needs to do a study comparing the average years for a career in both the minors and majors for pitchers 40 years ago and today. There are a lot more pitchers today, so the data may not tell us anything, but I suspect the average length of career for pitchers 40 years ago was a lot less than it is for pitchers today.
  22. What is the over/under for offense making up for bad defense? Or vice versa? There seems to be this blind belief the last couple years that we should return to the days of Ed Brinkman where good defense justifies a total absence of offense, but decent offense doesn't make up for bad defense. So where is the line drawn? This is one area where stats measurements need to mature. Cruz' minor league numbers indicate an offensive player with similarly horrible obp and batting average, and absolutely zero power. He's been a much worse hitter in the minors than Yuni. If those numbers are any indication of major league ability with the bat, then he might have to be the absolute best ss to ever play the game in order to be an improvement over Yuni. Betancourt may be bad, but Cruz is going to have to play better than he ever has at any level to be the better option. Cruz may be an OK backup, but I have a hard time believing he provides more wins for the Brewers than Yuni, given past history.
