  1. I understand the comparison between Garland and Suppan, but just for the record, Garland's career WAR through age 30 is 22.5, Suppan's through age 30 was 12.2. Garland's *ERA+ is 104, Suppan's through 30 was 101. a 3% difference (roughly) matters. Granted, Garland has pitched 400 more innings than Suppan had at age 30, and made 50 more starts. But those numbers also make the argument Garland is more valuable.
  2. Is he on the 40 man to prevent him from being drafted in the rule V at the winter meetings? I remember a few years back the Orioles signed veteran utility guy Chris Gomez to a minor league deal. Then at the winter meetings the Phillies picked him in the rule V draft. So, the Orioles then had to buy him back from the Phillies to get him back.
  3. Don't mean to stray too far off topic, but I never understood the hype about Escobar when he was in the minors. His stats didn't justify it. I figured it was the organization's plan to over-hype and then get him traded since they already had a young "star" in Hardy at ss. Instead, Hardy tanked and got too expensive too fast, forcing the team to change gears and cross their fingers hoping it would turn out OK. Maybe it still will.
  4. Uggla and Prince had similar seasons in 2010. The difference between the two is this is probably as good as Uggla gets where it was a down year for Prince. Uggla is 4 years older and Prince's career OPS is 80 points higher. If Uggla was a quality 2B you could argue that makes up for a lot of the difference. But he's not. In a couple years he'll be a 1B or DH, which further's the distance between his and Prince's value.
  5. That's two years in a row the AL has had a weak rookie class. Is the NL catching up?
  6. I think Mattingly is one of the most overrated players of all time. He had 4 fantastic seasons, 1984-1987, and then wasn't really anything special after that. In the 8 seasons he played after 1987 he topped .800 OPS only 4 times, just once reaching into the .820's. He only played 13 seasons, those last 8 hitting just 99 homers with a .347obp/.424slg. His peak didn't last long enough, and his health didn't allow him the years to run up the counting stats. Take away those 4 great years and all you have left is an injury prone Wally Joyner.
  7. Kranitz? Who just got fired by the Showalter and the Orioles? It's funny because the Orioles hired Kranitz for many of the same reasons the Brewers hired Peterson.
  8. Guidry is no. 100 on the pitchers' list, just two above Viola. I don't think he deserves to be in and wouldn't even be considered if he hadn't played for that team.
  9. I guess this means the Tony Gwynn Jr era is over. If Maybin could hit even in the .260-.275 range he'd be an asset given his defense and touch of power. He's 2 years younger than CarGo and a little better hitter already.
  10. Simmons, Gillick, Martin, Marvin Miller. Steinbrenner can wait. But of course he won't. He'll get in with Billy Martin and espn will be overjoyed. Garvey had a career .775 OPS, a 116 *OPS+. Less than 300 homers, one hit shy of 2600 hits. I don't think that's good enough for a 1B. Staub had similar career numbers, but he played through most of the 60's, a dead ball era. Vida Blue didn't have a long enough peak in my opinion. A couple of outstanding years, then several seasons as a mid rotation guy. Guidry had a 9 years of sustained excellence, then essentially was done. Mussina was this good for 17 years. I bet more people would argue against Mussina in the HOF than Guidry. I guess it's back to the age old debate of short career with high peak vs. steady longevity.
  11. The Silver Slugger award makes so much more sense than the Gold Gloves every year. I guess it's just easier to quantify offense. I'd take the NL lineup over the AL. Are we seeing a shift in superiority from the one league to the other?
  12. Am I missing something? According to b-ref.com, Crawford's WAR the last two years is 4.4 and 4.8. Nevertheless, if he's out there as a free agent, wouldn't it make more sense for Boston to keep Lester and/or Buchholz and just sign Crawford?
  13. If he could have made it as an everyday CF'er he'd be a pretty valuable commodity. As it is, he's a solid player with good on base skills, not quite the power you'd like from a corner outfielder. Anyone remember why he missed the last half of the season? I always liked him too. Looks like the Royals get decent back of rotation guy in Mazarro, and somebody who's still way down in the minors at 22.
  14. That is the only way I could see a Braun trade happening. However, as much as I love Prince, I would rather have Braun long term than him. If we are talking about the next 5-6 years, I'd rather have Prince. He may not be much of a player after that, but for the last few years he's really been the face of the franchise. I thought Braun looked relatively disinterested this year. He doesn't appear to care about improving his defense. Gamel could stand out in LF as effectively as Braun and probably post stats similar to Braun's 2010. I certainly wouldn't look to trade Braun, but if someone wanted to blow Melvin away with an offer, such as Lester or Buchholz plus more, he has to seriously consider it.
  15. With the veterans these are just looking at what they did last year, then predicting they'll return a little closer to their mean. I say this every year, but despite the science that goes into all these winter projections, it seems one could be just as accurate making educated guesses.
  16. La Roche is a nice placeholder type for 1B. 25homers, 85 ribbies a year, decent obp, slugging in the mid-high .400's every year. On the other hand, isn't about what we can expect out of a full season of Gamel? And isn't that about what McGehee has given the last 2 seasons? If you could sign La Roche, then trade McGehee for something of value, then you could justify the move. Otherwise, you're just adding redundancy.
  17. Maybe my favorite manager after Earl Weaver. Heard him interviewed several times over the years. Always came across as a genuine, energetic smart baseball man with a folksy charm. I didn't realize he was ill. RIP Sparky. You led one of my favorite teams of all time, the 1984 Tigers. Thank you.
  18. Both the Roenicke brothers had career OBP 100+ points over their batting averages. Can never predict how the player will be as a manager, but that's still a good sign to me. Brother Gary was paret of Earl Weaver's great LF platoon in mid-80's with John Lowenstein. Maybe some of that past will rub off on Ron and he'll channel Earl's mojo. I'm glad it's not Valentine who would have been bigger than the team, and probably butted heads with Melvin once he realized what it's like to manage an team on a limited budget. I think Bobby V as Brewers manager would have a similar story line to Pinella's in Tampa. Whether is was Cora or Roenicke, it's probably better to be starting with a new guy. March 31st, here we come!
  19. The regular season ended on Sunday. 3 playoff series started on Wednesday, the Giants/Braves didn't begin until Thursday. Since there is always a possibility of a one game playoff on Monday, I guess I can see waiting until Wednesday to start the playoffs. Philly and Cincy played a game on wed, then took Thursday off. They played on Friday, then took Saturday off. 2 games in 4 days. That's just dumb. The Phils won it on Sunday, but I presume they would have taken Monday off then played through Wednesday had it gone 5 games. The other three series were only scheduled through Tuesday Oct 12. After Tuesday the 12th, the crickets chirped on baseball diamonds across America, but no games were played until 3 days later, on Friday the 15th; the start of the ALCS. The NLCS didn't start until Saturday. Both should have started on Thursday, a night when there isn't much for sports on TV. The best of 7 Championship series' were scheduled to end on Saturday the 23rd(AL) and Sunday the 24th (NL). The World Series didn't start until Wednesday. I'd just like to see the scheduled tightened up. Baseball should be done before Nov 1.
  20. I could along with this if they'd eliminate the unecessary off-days during the playoffs. There should only be one day off between each round of the playoffs and no non-travel off days. I the previous two weeks there were a few days with no sports on TV that could have been filled with baseball. Instead, baseball rested. By the time you get to the World Series the casual fans have lost interest because it's never clear when they will play another game.
  21. I can understand not liking a guy who's been a major league manager before, but how can you like or want a particular guy who's never managed? I don't particularly want Melvin, but how can a person say, I want Roenicke, or I want Cora? I'm not critical, just curious how you can pick one or the other when we are all on the outside and have no idea how these guys interviewed or what they would do as a manager?
  22. Not a bad idea. At least he could skip those 6-9 game trips out to the Coasts. He could still make the trips to Chicago, St. Louis, Mpls, etc. That would still put him on the air for 3/4 of the games a year, while keeping his work load down.
  23. I'm with you Cheezwizhead. A team celebrating among themselves is not disrespecting the other team on the field.
  24. Weeks gets only a B while Hart gets an A and Braun, a B+? Rickie was at least as valuable as Hart, and better than Braun..
