  1. MY bad, TLB. Thanks for catching that. The obp stinks vs. righties, but his slugging makes up for it a little. A .748 OPS is not terrible. It suggests more of a "soft" platoon than sitting him against every righty.
  2. I think John Gordon is terribly boring.
  3. I'd like to see him pitch a couple more outings in the 7th or 8th before putting him back in the closer role. If Axford or Braddock take the job in the meantime, so be it.
  4. Well, now Hart's .264/355/434 against lefties. I don't know if Cain or Lawrie are capable yet of putting up those numbers overall in the majors.
  5. Obviously Rickie is in a slump right now, but I beginning to think this is what Weeks is, an average defensive 2B with good on base skills, low batting average and occasional pop. He's approaching 2300 plate appearances with a career OPS of .762. That makes him an average to slightly above major league starting 2B. There's nothing wrong with that, but there are probably better or cheaper options for 2B going forward.
  6. There's a prevailing attitude on this board that it's better to trade players than keep them on the team during their peak years. This must date back to the days when the Brewers were always horrible and in constant (albeit failing) rebuild mode.
  7. Actually, Vargas has had two bad outings, his 2nd appearance on the 4/12 and his last appearance on 5/15. In the 12 appearances between that time he threw 13.2 innings, 6 BB, 14K's, 1HR. Last Saturday's outing was horrendous, but I'm not sure he's ready for the DFA pile yet.
  8. I count Soup with 8 appearances and a 3.75 ERA. 14 hits in 12 ip, 4 BB and 8K's. Peavy I think you aren't looking at his two relief appearances in April. So, his ERA is down in his last 6 appearances (1.29), but he's also walk 4 and only K'ed 3 in those 7 innings. I'm not sold that he's any different as a reliever than as a starter.
  9. Kottaras has always been a good hitting catcher. His minor league OPS is .811 with an obp 100 points higher than the batting average. It's my understanding the Red Sox didn't want to give him up, but were in a roster crunch and with Martinez as their catcher he wasn't going to get a chance. Great pickup by Doug.
  10. I bet Kottaras plays most every day since he's more experienced with the pitchers. You'll see Lucroy for the Sunday/Thursday afternoon games, then back down when Zaun comes back. To me, that's OK. What's up with Salome? Is he injured?
  11. A lot better. Firing the manager usually means cashing in on the season. I'm not ready to do that, though I admit time is running out.
  12. I'm don't understand. Basically the guy said he doesn't know what's wrong, he feels fine, his mechanics are good, and he wants the ball in the 9th. In the quote from McCalvey's blog he admits his failures are hard on the team. So, you are starting to not like the guy because of these comments?
  13. That's the bottom line. If Hoffman blows the game, Macha can shrug his shoulders in the Post Game and say, "we had our guy in there. HE just didn't get the job done."
  14. It's disappointing Gerut hasn't seized his opportunity. It may be time to give some of his at bats to Inglett.
  15. Unfortunately Alfredo Simon signed a league minimum deal with the Orioles last December. http://www.baseball-refer...layers/s/simonal01.shtml
  16. I think the bottom line is the bullpen has blown a lot of games and it's trashing the season. There are other weaknesses too of course, but they pale in comparison.
  17. Actually, they drafted a lot of pitching in the last several years. Just few of them signed or turned out to be any good.
  18. Too bad Edmonds is on the DL. I'd do a new guy every game. Something like Braun, Weeks, and McGehee or Prince. Put Inglett in at 2nd for Weeks, Counsell at 3rd for McGehee, Gerut in LF.
  19. Right. But the problem is that Davis has always bucked his own predictors. His career has been one big anomaly. An exception that proves the rule. So saying his peripherals aren't that different than in years past isn't necessarily saying he's pitching well.
  20. What really hurts is that any Schmoe reliever is capable of pitching a scoreless inning 70-80% of the time. Especially when they start the inning.
  21. Estrada has thrown 30 fewer pitches than Parra in the same number of innings. He's only at 55 pitches, so I agree, let him pitch the 9th. Give the bullpen the day off if you can.
  22. Not counting Suppan's starts, the rotation of Yo, Wolf, Bush, Davis, and Narveson is averaging 5-2/3 innings per start. Is this really that different than other teams? Throw out Davis and the other 4 are just under 6 ip per start. I realize other teams have CC and Halladay types that give the bullpen a virtual day off every once in a while, but how many teams have a rotation like the Brewers', where everyone regularly pitches into the 6th? Brewer relievers may be making more appearances than average, but is the pen really pitching that many more innings than the average NL bullpen?
  23. btw, Corey Hart is posting an .846OPS as of right now. 268/351/495. I'll take those number from him for the next 5 years and gladly pay for it. Edmonds has an .824 OPS. Gomez, .768, Gerut, .695 with a bullet. Offensively the only position that is struggling in 1B. And that sleeping giant appears to be yawning, stretching, and ready to move from his den.
  24. The Sexson deal brought a young no. 2 starter in Capuano, who was pretty darn good for 2-1/2 years, and a younger high upside pitcher in de la Rosa. The other guys were placeholders and roster fillers because this team didn't have enough warm bodies. All in all, it was the exact kind of deal that Melvin has been blasted since last winter on this board for not making during his tenure.
  25. Please tell me this was supposed to be in blue. That was weird. I didn't see the post right above mine. Mine was not a reply to that one. No, I don't want Macha to let his starter throw 130 pitches! I just meant I want a manager who's smart enough to give his team a chance to win once in a while.
