  1. I thought it was against the rules for a Brewer to throw 96.
  2. Narv was over 10 pitches to start the 6th. It's a disaster waiting to happen
  3. Oswalt is likely to end up at some big market team that can afford to absorb the contract without too much thought. The Dodgers, Braves, Mets, even Phillies could use another solid starter.
  4. I'm trying to come around to the idea that defense is really important, but I just can't so much. Certainly it's important when a mistake is made in a close game, just like a walk can be. Certainly infield, and especially middle infield is more important than the OF corners. But it's hard to me to accept the gap between an average defensive 2B and an elite 2B is as wide as it is on offense.
  5. Fair enough. But saying he's on pace to give 40 homers and ignoring the fact half the dingers he's given up came in one game, is misleading at best. It may be every 4th game Bush gives up 4 homers, but with only 7 starts so far in the season it's hard to reach any conclusion. As I said above though, it is valid to be concerned about his K:BB ratio, since that has been mediocre is pretty much every outing.
  6. It's comical to criticize Melvin for taking Bush over McGowan, even if this was an option. It's been 20 months since McGowan threw a pitch in professional ball. Even when he was healthy he'd pitched less than half the innings Bush had at the time and had a higher career ERA and lower K:BB ratio. If McGowan had come been part of the Overbay trade, today that would be fodder for Melvin critics. Proof he's a bad evaluator of pitching talent. One more thought. Melvin is often criticized for never signing a high ceiling pitcher. In 2005 he signed Sheets to a 4 year $38.5 million deal. That was a pretty powerful move for the organization at the time. He was arguably the best pitcher in the league after his 2004 season and Melvin stepped up to plate in signing him long term.
  7. 4 of Bush's 8 homers came in that one, horrible start. So it's a bit of stretch to conclude he's gonna hit 40. That's like saying Pujols was on a pace to hit 324 homers after Opening Day. That said, his BB rate is up and K rate down. So I too have some worries, but so far his results have been fine.
  8. Kameron Loe hasn't been in the majors since 2008. He's never had a season that compares to Manny's 2008. Manny had one bad year, preceded by a year plus of quality. Plus Loe is right handed. I don't understand how you found him to compare to Parra. It's just as valid to compare Manny's first career 350 innings to Jamie Moyer's. Loe has been consistently bad in the majors. Loe's career K rate is 4.7 per 9 ip. Parra's is 7.9. I don't see how that's comparable. 7.9 K's per 9ip is why you don't give up on Parra.
  9. Yeah, I'm not ready to give up on a 27 year old lefty with a 4:1 K:BB ratio and 8+ K's per 9ip. Certainly management must feel a sense of urgency about this season. They'll tinker with the pitching staff some more before going into panic mode. If Davis continues to flounder for the next 3-5 starts, they'll prep Manny for the rotation. It's hard to imagine both Davis and Suppan in the pen, so one may get released outright. I agree they'll need to win a lot of games-86+ at least-for Macha to keep his job. If they are floundering under .500 in September Melvin and Macha will be fired. One of those last week of the season things.
  10. I'm surprised teams don't have a guy watching the catcher on TV.
  11. His HR rate is ridiculous. In a close game, with Bush on the mound, the game often turns with one bad pitch. He's serviceable as a back end guy, but he's also FA after this year. Do you really want him back? Yes. He's given up 8 homers in 7 starts, but 4 of them were in one game. His other 6 starts he has been effective. I doubt anyone will give him a 3 year deal. A rotation of Yo, Wolf, Bush, Narveson, Parra, and possibly Capuano is a good starting point for 2011 planning. And it will be cheap too.
  12. I don't get why people think Bush needs to be kicked off the team.
  13. Actually, I think that's what Melvin has been trying to do. Except for Suppan, he's been trying for short term deals with vets to fill holes that can't be filled by young talent with high upside. These short term deals were supposed to fill the gaps during the brief window that Prince, Braun, Hart, Hardy, and Weeks would take the team to glory.
  14. If the Yankees were involved they'd just get to play the entire season at home. Just to be on the safe side, ya know.
  15. I'm counting 8 teams in the NL who appear "stuck in neutral" so far this year: Brewers, Cubs, Pirates, Marlins, Braves, Dodgers, Rockies, D-Backs. A couple others are probably playing over their heads: Reds, Nats, Padres. Some of these teams aren't very good and will drop out over the next 2-3 months. Some will linger in neutral and some will kick it up and compete for division/wild card titles. Too early to say where the Brewers are right now, but that's true for at least half the league. I don't think they are far off from a 10 game winning streak, or some such thing. But they could just as easily go through the year teasing, and never really being good.
  16. They do seem to be stuck in neutral, but I'm not sure the rotation is the problem. Since Suppan was pulled, the last 3 rounds through the current starting 5 has produced an average of just under 6 ip per start, and a 3.75 ERA. Davis is the only one who remains truly shaky out there. Narveson is struggling to get through 6, but that could be a function of getting used to higher pitch counts.
  17. Seattle was pretty lucky last year. These things tend to even out over time.
  18. Jody went 0 fer yesterday, so I expect that's the last we see of him for a couple weeks.
  19. I give Macha credit for bringing in Coffey in the 5th yesterday. We always talk about using your best reliever in the most critical part of the game and not saving him jsut for ht 8th/9th innings. Sunday, Macha did that.
  20. This drives me nuts! Now I hear Provus doing the same on the radio. Bring back Matt Vasgersian!
  21. Rickie is 6 for 20 with a homer and 3 BBs since this topic appeared. Yee Haw!!! He's hitting 276/321/447. I'd take that from a premium defensive CF'er without complaints. Torii Hunter wasn't this good at 24.
  22. Oops, sorry about that. Target field sounds great Einhorn. I like the idea of the heaters for colds days. It's closer to my home than Miller Park, so I usually end up going to more Twins games than Brewer games. Can't wait to get there. I agree about Miller Park feeling somewhat like the roof is always closed. I have been to a few hot and humid games where the air is so stifling and still that it's really uncomfortable just to sit in the seat. That's when I wish there was no roof so we could feel a little breeze. All in all though, it's worth it to know the game will always be played after I make the 3 hour drive.
  23. It may be the roof is really "needed" 5 times a year, but there are plenty more times when it's a relief to have a roof. Like when it's 35-40 degrees outside, or when a giant summer storm blows in mid game delaying the game for 90 minutes, then resuming play in the aftermath of a soggy field, soaking seats, and drenched clothing. I'm glad Target Field is lovely, and can't wait to see it. I agree with your implication that the roof at Miller Park replaces some possible architectural aesthetics that you see at other parks. But really, do we have to get in a pi@@ing match over who's house is prettier? Miller Park is a great place to watch a game.
  24. If Gomez goes on the DL you put Gerut in CF on a regular basis. There seems to be mounting evidence he hits pretty well with regular playing time, but struggles in a PH/ Sunday afternoon starter role. Bring up Hopper to ride the bench.
