    Hawkins isn't very good and like many relievers, must be used cautiously.

    No kidding, he looks like the Hawkins that stunk for the Cubs, not the Hawkins that was pretty good in Minnesota and Houston.Hawkins stunk in Baltimore too. The only thing he has going for him is velocity. He's Exhibit A for the argument relievers are unpredictable and capable of widely different results from year to year. Very few are consistently excellent. (Coincidently, David Riske has been when he's been healthy.)

    Silva's last outing he gave up 8 hits, 3hr, 5runs in 5 innings. He gave the Cubs 4 good outings in April, but he could be back to his old ways.

    JJ appears to be heating up with the bat, but so far the trade and replacement at ss has worked out well for the Brewers.

    Wow, where does the time go? Seems like only a couple years ago he was Boston's next big thing.

    Sad to see him go. A great talent and great man. I grew up in Iowa and could get WJR at night, so listened to lots of Tigers broadcasts. He was wonderful.

    Not to rip on you, but those examples seem pretty over the top. I can't imagine any team in the US naming themselves after something associated with slavery or the Holocaust.Native Americans were indeed enslaved. Please check your history. And while "holocaust" may be too strong of a word for you, I don't believe the strategic annhilation of entire tribal nations is much of a reach. Right, thank you. Strategic annihilation= genocide. Just because our history books ignored it when we were kids, and it happened 150 or more years ago, doesn't mean we can dismiss it today. I am all for team nicknames that honor history or a legacy. Truthfully, I don't see what's wrong with naming your team the Indians as long as it's not meant in racist way, but then, I'm not Native American. In the end, I think it's up to Native Americans to decide whether it' offensive. It's up to the rest of us to respect that.

    I think most baseball fans don't like their team's manager. Unless they're winning of course. My Red Sox fan friend thinks Francona is at least 50% bonehead. Torre was run out 2 or 3 jobs until he landed with the stacked Yankees team. Now he a beloved cuddly bear, who many consider a great manager. In other sports, particularly football, the head coach may be the most important person in the organization. More important than the talent on the field. In baseball, this simply isn't true with managers. If players perform, the manager is brilliant; sometimes even "innovative". If the players fail, the manager is run out of town on a rail. I think this is why managers are too scared to think outside the box. They all do pretty much the same thing, so when it fails, they can say "we had our guy in there, he just didn't get it done". That said, I don't hate Macha and I think he's smarter than Yost. Yost was good when the team was bad, but as the team improved he couldn't seem to handle the pressure. I don't mind that Macha is rather emotionless on the bench; almost all managers are that way. I do have a hard time figuring out what made Melvin hire him. They don't seem to be on the same page, like he and Yost were in the early days.

    So if a team chose a nickname that was, say, derogatory to Jews you'd all be OK with that? What if their mascot alluded to the time of the Holocaust? What if a team's nickname/mascot referred to stereotype of a big strong African American slave? I'm just trying to get a fix on where the line is drawn.

    I think Melvin was trying to acquire veteran players to complement his young talent in an effort to win now for the fans. I suspect if he had focused on young minor league pitching we'd have heard cries of the Brewers being in perpetual rebuilding mode.

    Me too. The fairest way is the old way, alternate every year. If you have to change it, then why not give it to the team with the highest winning pct?

    I'm OK with this stuff. I'm not a fan of the All Star game anyway. Meaningless baseball in the middle of the season is, well, meaningless.

    Is Manny Parra the best pitcher in the 'pen? If so, he should be pitching in the most crucial situations, right? Usually, at least in close games, that's going to be the 9th.

    On April 30, 2008 he was 0-2, 2 blown saves and a 6.52 ERA. On April 30, 2007 he was 1-2, 2 blown saves and a 6.23 ERA. His career month by month numbers shows his BB rate and K/BB ratio are the worst in the first month of the season. It's worrisome his K rate is down and HR rate up even compared to his typical first month stats. But this could still just be Trevor being Trevor and he'll settle down.

    There are signs the rotation is stabilizing and getting pretty good. 7 of the last 9 starts have been QS if you fudge a bit and give credit to Narveson for yesterday's game. Wolf, Gallardo, and Bush have been effective-each has only had one bad start. Gallardo and Wolf in particular are rolling into mid season-quality form. The offense is fine. So is the defense. The only problem is the bullpen. Out of the four; rotation, bullpen, offense, defense, the bullpen is probably the easiest to fix mid season. Some of these guys will stabilize, some of them may need to be replaced. Especially for fans, it stinks to watch the bullpen blow a game, but for the team it's far worse to have a bad rotation that gives up 5 runs a game. I'll give them about two weeks to figure out/stabilize the bullpen before being demoralized. I think the rest of the team is as good as any in the league.

    Inglett can play some OF, so along with Gerut it's not crucial to bring up an OF'er. I didn't like that Edmonds PH for Hart yesterday. In the end, that move may have cost the team the game. Golly a 39-9/10th year old ballplayer comes down with a sore back? Who could have predicted that? Coming soon to newspaper headline on your doorstep: "Edmonds tweaks hammy".

    What's the point of a contract if it's not guaranteed? If it isn't guaranteed, then a player is more likely to sign a one year, $100 million deal with Yankees than a 5 year/$100 million deal with the Brewers, right?

    Well done monty. They could probably trade Prince in the offseason for at least a couple good prospects, then sign someone like Adam Dunn for a couple years to play 1B. Dunn would make up for a lot of the numbers lost by Prince's absence, but with a more reasonable contract.

    Any chance they get Craig Coshun to do it? I know he works for FSN, but it seems like a deal could be worked out. Not saying I want him, just that he might be the most logical/easiest choice.

    I thought he sounded raspy and not well the first week of the season, but seemed his old self since then. Get well soon Bob, we need you!

    It would be great if Alcides won ROY. I wouldn't call Heyward overhyped just yet. The sample size is still small, but he's sportin' an .832 OPS after his current 1 for 17 slump. Before that his slash stats were an impressive 298/411/617. Every player goes through a 1 for 17 or 2 for 20 or worse slump over the course of a season.
