  1. Good question. According to the Pirates web site, they are not broadcasting the game tonight. If you can believe that, then the only broadcast of the game will be originating from the Brewers. That leads me to believe (with hope and trepidation), that the ch. 657 broadcast is the WMLW broadcast. Crossing fingers now.....
  2. Doug has said in the past you get most value from position players by trading them in the offseason. While a deadline trade in a failed 2010 seems tantalizing, the most likely scenario is a winter trade. There will be posturing with contract proposals and rejections for a couple months, then a trade. If the team doesn't make the playoffs this year, you could see some kind of blockbuster deal with Prince that will significantly change the team. Maybe something like Prince/Parra or Villy + for a handful of players.
  3. Best wishes to him and his family. Of course every case is different, but prostrate cancer can be highly curable. My father had it about 10 years ago, and was given a 100% clean bill of health after surgery. No radiation or chemo necessary.
  4. It seems like the majority of those being suspended are from the Dominican or at least Latin/South America. Is this a problem with the "supplements" they are taking when they're home over the winter?
  5. Bad outfits!
  6. Great managers do make a difference. History has shown there have been precious few great managers.
  7. I listened to both games on the weekend on the radio. Uecker did a wonderful job. You guys are a tough crowd.
  8. If the best the team can do with Prince is top out in the low 80s for wins, then they probably should shop him in the hopes of getting a high ceiling rotation guy.
  9. If they are still lackluster approaching July 1st, I expect Macha will be fired in the standard GM-last-ditch-attempt to save his own job. Randolph would be the appropriate person to hand the job through the end of the season.
  10. That's usually the best course of action, but it didn't work out so well a year and a half ago.
  11. I agree with everything in your post, but let me argue I don't think Melvin has made bad trades per se. Every trade involves risk and the Brewers lost on a few of Melvin's "risks". But from my perspective he's not made obvious blunders or ridiculous trades that a monkey could see was bad for the team. His moves follow a sound logic and usually reflect an effort to get the best player the team can obtain or afford to fill a need. There are plenty of examples of other GMs making crazy bad trades in recent years. Trades that were jaw dropping bad when they were announced and never improved with time.
  12. I moved to Wisconsin in1990. I wouldn't be a Brewer fan if it wasn't for Uecker. Before I listened to him I couldn't stand to listen to an entire game on the radio. I have not listened to a game on the radio this year, but I have always liked his play by play. He makes the game interesting. Listening to Uecker feels like I'm at a game with a friend. You pay attention to the balls and strikes but the conversation shifts back and forth from the ballpark.
  13. Suppan will get more than 2 starts. He'll get 5-6 starts even if he's really terrible. If he mixes in a couple QS, you can bet he'll be in the rotation until mid-June.
  14. Well, I was including the 7th as a late inning (good starting pitching should get you 6 innings). the w/l record depends on how many games you get a 3 run lead....
  15. Me too. I think they can get a 30 homer prospect, a hard throwing rotation prospect, and a bullpen or role position player.
  16. I like Stetter, but LOOGYs are overrated. The fact is, they face righties more often than lefties. The secret is to have good starting pitching and an offense that give you a 3 run cushion going into the late innings. Granted it didn't work yesterday, but it will work 80% of the time.
  17. They are on the road, only ahead 3-2 at the time, and need a win early in the season.
  18. In fairness Nix is the same age, considered a pretty good defensive outfielder capable in CF, has some power and a career minor league OPS over .800. So, if it did take Cruz to get CoCo, I'm sure Melvin was hoping to get a good lefty CF'er with power in return. Maybe Nix didn't project as the hitter Cruz was, but the team did need more lefty bats and a CF'er to replace Brady Clark going forward. Obviously it was a risk that didn't pay off, but at the time I don't think it was as glaringly one sided as some remember.
  19. Doesn't even have to be with playoffs in sight. Some team would overpay for him during the hot stove league as well. Prince is a very marketable guy, and I could see a floundering team like the Nationals or Orioles sign him jsut to generate ticket sales and fan interest. Even look at the Royals. A team floundering for years. Prince would be a good fit for the Orioles. Their payroll is down and they don't have any real prospect at 1B. They have a handful of good young position players but no real slugger. Surrounding him with Roberts, Markakis, Jones, and Wieters would make a pretty strong lineup, even in the AL East. Plus they are loaded with talented pitching.
  20. I've grown to like Miller Park quite a bit over the years, but when it first opened I was underwhelmed. So much went into the roof and panels that there's not much interesting architecturally speaking. I thought it was kinda dumb building an open air stadium in Mpls, but that afforded them the opportunity to build a beautiful place from the looks of it. And really, is the weather in April and October that different than in Chicago?
  21. Yes, by all means let's look at the career minor leaguers who got away and four years later turned into good ballplayers for a couple seasons. But lets ignore the similar players that Melvin acquired who had similar career paths: McGehee, Turnbow, Pods, Clark, etc. I think the trade for CC came after JDLR, didn't it? Randy Wolf was considered the second best free agent pitcher on the market last winter and the smallest market in baseball was able to sign this die hard Californian to a Midwestern team. Please cite examples of teams who did trade for top of the rotation starters under similar payroll restrictions. I can think of two trades, Garza and Kazmir that may qualify. Would you have supported trading the talent it would take to get these players? And four years later, when/if those players had good seasons with other teams would you still be satisfied or would you want Melvin fired for letting that talent go?
  22. I think fleehaw is onto something. Narveson seems to be a integral part of the bullpen, where Parra is a stater-in-waiting. It's early yet, but Manny's doesn't seem expected to be prepared to pitch every other day like a typical reliever. He's probably going to do a lot of side sessions and be Suppan's backup every 5th day.
