  1. Ned Yost: May the fleas of a thousand camels infest thy armpits.
  2. Well, that's the last time I complain that the Brewers never get any national press.
  3. Well, we'll see what team picks him up next year based on his performance versus his results. At least Gagne has owned his mistakes and I suppose it's Yost's job to protect him from dyspeptic, irrational fans like me.
  4. What a forgiving board. Five blown saves and his successes were dicey propositions. All parts of the order make good contact and he doesn't get ahead of people. But sure, bad luck, bad calls, fogged goggles, etc.
  5. Well, since Trinity is within 10 miles from Milwaukee's geographical center (the Milorganite plant), it qualifies. So no, you're good. You will get your 71 beer-bellied virgins in heaven.
  6. ( Being born in Milwaukee is no fluke. It is a gift from God.)
  7. To put things in perspective, I have to say, as a fan, losing Gantner like we did was pretty devastating to me at the time. And then there was that one time that Favre got hurt.
  8. By the way, all the speculation is predicated on the belief that he did himself substantial additional harm by being sent back out there. Ain't how knee injuries like that work. I think the blame game is the rightful shock of losing a clearly dominant pitcher. Looking at the replay, I thought it a certainty that Yo was going to miss some time. But they don't have that luxury in the dugout. We've got to eat this and move on. To quote Braun, it's not supposed to be easy. But let's not complicate the issue by the circular firing squad.
  9. Yeah, I saw that. I know the Cubs have had their share of pitcher injury issues, but I can't say my first reaction was ever "Hahahahahaha." I'd say karma's a "b," but there's a century of being freaking losers to support that. Let 'em laugh.
  10. Amen. Let's revive ourselves from the fainting couch. Battle on. Nothing else to do. Maybe someone will emerge from Nashville. Maybe Villy and Parra will step up. Why they play 162 games. It sucks, to be sure, but the team needs to focus.
  11. Being a Brewers fan always has required much. We've never had the spree-drunk loser-cachet patina of the Cubs. The imperial magesty of the Yankees. The righteous destiny of the Cards. We've had the hard-luck Slavic and stabbing yearning of Brewers fans, a yearning that was extant two generations before in the small-town hysteria for the Braves. So here we are, having been lanced to the heart by the $170 million Cubs payroll, shamed again in the national spotlight.. One more Station of the Brewers Cross. This is part of the ride. This is why I watched until the last out. (That, and the fact that I won a coin toss with the girlfriend so we'd watch "Top Chef" later, but this seems more principled.)
  12. Make sure you bring your health insurance information, since the odds are good that you could catch sepsis in the men's room. Also, the reek of smug entitlement emanating from within the stadium has been known to induce strokes.
  13. Using Mitchell investigation resources to target Wes Helms would be like using the Nuremberg Trials for Col. Klink.
  14. I have done a Talmudic study of the rules of posting etiquette and rumor broadcasting. Let me just say that when it comes to the subject of Helms, I must bite my tongue to the point of it splitting.
  15. Wes Helms - a modest man with much to be modest about. Lousy player on the field. Lousy person off. A footnote at best. Boo him all you want: He most certainly deserves it.
  16. I love the Brewers ticket sales staff. I mean this in the best way, it's always "Glengarry Glen Ross" with "300 Club" passes. I mean "Metavanti (sp?) Club" passes. Even in the dark days, they've been pros. Love the go-go attitude and the Men's Warehouse suits.
  17. My cousin just looked at Capuano's condo near the lake. Someone from the building said he'd often have the pitchers over for card games. Think it's in the same building where S-Pod lived.
  18. I agree with Cedeno. Anything less than a World Series victory for the Cubs would be a crushing and shameful disappointment, one that will cut to the character of the team and its godshead, Lou Piniella. In fact, there are some other metrics that they should think about: 25 wins apiece for Ted Lilly and Ryan Dempster; 150 RBI for Aramis Ramirez; and the reanimation of Harry Caray, who hasn't been able to get in on the racist japes about Fukudome.
  19. See? Having 14 pitchers on the roster is paying off...
  20. A deputy U.S. marshal just knocked on the door to my office to see if, judging by my cries of agony, someone was getting murdered in here. I said nothing was dying except my hope in God. Or at least in this bullpen.
  21. I didn't have the guts to start this as a separate thread, but does anyone have an up-to-date sense of what Simba has been thinking about the bullpen goings-on? He's too savvy to say anything on-the-record, but are there heaving sighs visible from the bench? Pursed dirty-diaper-smell lips?
  22. Some managers wouldn't put a 29-year-old Mariano Rivera, let alone a gasser and steroid reformer in his decline, into the position of that many consecutive appearances, so I must humbly say that I think it's a false choice. Was it not clear after the first home run, or at least the home run to....Bako...that he didn't have his best stuff? I'm not even debating his abilities out loud here, I'm doubting whether he will be wisely used and put in a position to succeed.
  23. Darn, darn, darn. I had a good sarcastic one that I have since been shamed in dropping. So I will say that a winning road trip makes the sting a little less. The better-than-average defense, the long starts by some of the starters, the great debut of Yovani, the way we outlast the Mets in the finale, the Ben Sheets mastery in the Santana game, the theft of the Cueto game. All in all, the team comes back from a road trip winning two of three road series, and that's with the meat of the lineup not yet having hit anywhere near their historic averages. (Did I say, "A winning road trip?")
