  1. "The world is ever changing. Why should I be afraid to change my word?" - Beria. I thought the fatwa against Ned Yost would have been removed by now, with the second-best record in the National League and a gutsy job of managing last night. I for one am prepared to give it up. But it seems that the cadres here feel otherwise. The collective wisdom of baseball savants, from Vin Scully to Don Sutton, from Mark Grace to Steve Phillips, whether or not you respect or like them, is that Yost is meticulous and calculating. I've read it here before and I'm won by the argument, where I admittedly talked trash about Yost before, but I think one day soon, when he's managing the Braves, we're going to miss him.
  2. May Harden have many more gem-of-a-loss results like he had last night.
  3. 1. Booga-booga Ankiel 2.634-5789 3. Beetlejuice.
  4. Ideally, the Cubs will have all their bullets the rest of the way and chalk up another century* of failure to the absolute hatred that baseball's gods have for them and their odious fans. But if it takes blisters, boils or plagues of locusts, I'm for anything that hoists the "L" flag above the wretched franchise. *Why hasn't anyone incorporated the Cubs' "C" into something celebrating a "C"entury-long miscarriage? I'm just not a graphics guy, or I'd do it myself.
  5. Versions of "100 More Years" have already been taken as Web sites. Untenable position for Web-minded Cubs haters. This divine command needs to be on a t-shirt.
  6. I regret that Xanadu, House of the Future, can't be the hosting venue.
  7. Do they sell Attanasio jerseys?
  8. Sorry to belabor the point, but I thought it was tasteless enough when Grace and Sutton were speaking in falsetto voices when the injury happened. It was all fun and games, with the obligatory "I hope he's okay" at the point of injury. And then to hear their solemn tone the next day reminded me of why I turn down the sound. I know it's hard not to joke like that - see "America's Funniest Home Videos" - but I just like my baseball broadcasts free of the humor that cuts up my 4-year-old nephew.
  9. Does every away broadcast have to find the fattest, homeliest Brewers fans? For anyone getting the away feeds this year, it seems that the opposing broadcast's producers have a standing policy to find every plus-300lb. Brewer fan in the house and linger lovingly on them throughout the game. A separate question is why there are so many plus-300lb. Brewer fans, but I digress as I sip my Mountain Dew and figure out which Arby's special I'm having for lunch.
  10. Isn't complaining about people complaining about Prince and his weight/power/Ipod dowloads part of the same carcass? As is complaining about people complaining about people complaining. It's the Prince Fielder Mobius Strip. But seriously, moaning is my Brewers birthright, and better to be moaning about Prince than about Jeffrey Hammonds. Speaking of dead horses.
  11. Beside the weight and the down power numbers, I think the realization that we're not going to be able to hang on to him at the same as we do Hart and Sheets (or whomever) makes people trigger-happy. We're not keeping him for his glove, that's for sure, but I'm fine with letting things play out.
  12. This was one of my first thoughts when I heard the story. It actually was the Houston Chronicle's beat writer, not grandee Richard Justice, who talked about the poison in the Houston clubhouse, lending credence to the folks who attacked Richard Justice for his obliviousness in saying the same about the Brewers situation. So I hereby withdraw any defense of Justice and join the right-thinking to call b.s. on what he said about the Crew. As the Scripture says, "Why do you worry about the mote in your brother's eye when you avoid the plank in your own?" (Although picturing a Prince Fielder eruption, as imagined by Michael Bay, still is a fun little mental exercise.) (note: "b.s." isn't allowed; please see language guidelines --1992)
  13. I mean, it COULD look like this, but I'm sure the WHIP would be pretty high. http://www.middle-east-online.com/pictures/biga/_25122_midgets-30-7-2004.jpg
  14. I know you're kidding, but this litany does still cause a cold sweat. And, at least I HOPE you're kidding, otherwise I'm going to open the veins after I'm done eating these tamales.
  15. Eh. Who cares about the Cy Young. I'd rather he win the World Series MVP.
  16. On the plus side, a bad outing, or any outing, by Bush will allow me to actually see the game before I get home from work. I knew that little sucker Sheets would have a short game last night, but sheesh. (Also, I hope to see that leftie in Zambrano's slot get lit up. C'mon O's.)
  17. If weeks got his average back up to .250 it would imply a hot streak that would really help the team in a period in which the collapse occurred last year.
  18. Linebrink still sticking it to us. Blech.
  19. I never got a lot of toys when I was a kid (I'll stipulate that I was a bad kid). But this one Christmas, I was promised a new Erector set. This is a family forum, so instead of using that last reference to make a different kind of joke about my anticipation, I'll say that waiting for the Carlos Zambrano MRI results has been like waiting to wake up that Christmas morning. And yeah, I get it about not rooting for bad things, I really do, but La Tonta is a special case.
  20. He named his freaking kid after Johnny Cash. I don't need any other reason to forgive him every strikeout he ever makes, past or future.
  21. Since the face on my schadenfreude meter blew off, and since I don't want to tempt the baseball gods and see Manny Parra killed in a freak bumper car accident, and to stop acting like it's Christmas morning and myself from calling my repellent Cubs fans friends all morning with my Jack Nicholson as "The Joker" laugh, I'm repeating my mantra: "Zambrano will be fine. Nothing to see here. Zambrano will be fine. Nothing to see here. Zambrano will be fine. Nothing to see here. Zambrano will be fine."
  22. I talked crap about Craig Counsell last night and he showed me up, with great defense and a home run (!). So, let me talk crap about him again, and see if it works.
  23. Yuck. I hope the curtain stays closed on this drama. I'D like to see Cecil in chains, if he's responsible for this mess - and all the evidence seems to point to that. But it's Prince's call. He had to have prepared for this coming out, so I hope it won't be much of a distraction, but it just sort of adds to the sourness ratio of the stories coming out about him this season (even as he has been a model teammate and is heating up at a critical time). Here's where being in a small market will redound positively to Prince. But again, yuck.
  24. The Hardy absence continues to worry me. Counsell's right: I'm worried, too, when he's in the starting lineup.
